Tech giant under fire for 'woke' Christmas ad starring non-binary influencer
Tech giant Google has been accused of going woke after their new Christmas advert featured a genderfluid beauty influencer.
The advertisement for Google Shopping features TikTok and Instagram personality Cyrus Veyssi, 30, searching for skincare products using the Google service.
Veyssi, who uses they/he pronouns, appears to be wearing women's clothing as he complains about having dry skin in the ad.
He said: 'This winter dryness is not it, especially when I have so many holiday looks to pull off, thankfully I know just the thing.'
Veyssi starts using Google shopping to look up face creams, before adding: 'Hydrated skin is a gift to everyone, no wrapping needed. Happy Holidays to me.'
The content creator shared the video to his 580,000 followers on Instagram, he also boasts over 600,000 followers on TikTok.
In his post, he said: 'The winter uglies are officially canceled. Thanks to Google’s Nearby filter, I’m ready to pull off all my holiday looks.'
The advertisement has since drawn the ire of social media users who accused the company of 'going woke' for picking Veyssi to star in their Christmas ad.
Conservative commentator and de-transitioner Oli London posted the video to his X account saying: 'Google launches WOKE Christmas campaign featuring man wearing women’s clothing complaining about his skin.'
Others quickly joined in with his put-down of the advertisement, with one saying: 'I'm so sick and tired of woke groups and companies pushing this disgusting degeneracy and mental illness.'
Another said: 'Ridiculous Google - not only is this offensive, but it also causes me to not support anything associated with Google. Why would you purposely Bud Light yourself?'
One other commented: 'Stop supporting companies that push degeneracy and perversion on the public.
'We, as the consumer, have the ultimate power. If we could learn to unite and work together.'
Someone else added: 'Another out of touch company failing to read the room. Can't avoid Google, but I don't have to buy the products they pitch via woke garbage like this.'
That was echoed by another user who posted: 'Why do these fs try and push this garbage down everyone's throats? Getting sick and tired of this s!'
Veyssi has been recently tipped as a rising social media influencer, and is currently a co-host on the Amazon Prime talk show 'Influenced'.
His TikTok videos usually center around his family dynamics and often promote beauty products.
Forbes recently ran a story on him in August detailing his recent rise in popularity and how his stardom started while living with his Iranian father during the pandemic.
A Google spokesperson said: 'Everyone likes to find a good deal and save money. That’s why we’re promoting Google Shopping as the best way to do that.
'To put it in perspective, this was a single sponsored Instagram post, representing a fraction of a percent of a much wider Google Shopping campaign.'
It comes after Coca-Cola faced a backlash over their Christmas advert after replacing humans with AI in it.
The new 16-second ad for 2024 has been developed solely using AI, meaning all the 'actors' are not real people and none of the shots were filmed on location.
While the firm claims the new commercial was an 'efficient' way of saving time and money, fans are not impressed.
Many have taken to X (Twitter) to slam the ad, calling it 'garbage', 'ugly' and 'too niche', while calling the multi-billion-dollar corporation 'lazy'.
