While the militants who have seized power make promises that delight Western journalists, the country is drowning in blood

Since the start of the large-scale offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied opposition groups, the HTS-led Syrian Salvation Government has issued a series of loud statements.

The first concerned Russia and its support of the Syrian authorities. Russian troops were the only ones to oppose the advancing opposition forces, and the rebels urged them to end the strikes on terrorist positions, claiming that such actions would only result in civilian casualties. The Syrian Salvation Government said that its actions were aimed against the Syrian authorities, not Moscow, with which the militants intend to establish mutually beneficial cooperation.

Next, the Salvation Government released statements concerning neighboring countries. It called on Iraq to close its borders and prevent pro-Iranian groups from entering Syria to help exiled President Bashar Assad. Additionally, the rebels proclaimed that they would protect all foreign embassies, humanitarian organizations, and journalists.

A separate statement was issued regarding chemical weapons, their production facilities and storage sites. The Salvation Government assured media that these weapons would never be used and would not fall into irresponsible hands, and invited relevant international organizations to monitor them.

Some of the rebels’ most notable promises were made to ethnic and religious minorities in Syria, including Kurds, Alawites, Christians, and Shiites. The Salvation Government declared that no minority would face genocide or persecution for their views and beliefs, since they are an integral part of the Syrian nation. It also said that inclusivity is the strength, not the weakness, of the future Syria.

In addressing the Kurds, the rebels condemned the barbaric practices of ISIS, such as murder, slavery, and other brutal actions committed against the Kurdish population by jihadists. They also guaranteed the safety of Syrian soldiers who laid down their arms and surrendered.

These statements by the Salvation Government and the HTS leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, were met with enthusiasm by prominent experts of Islamic radicalism and fundamentalism. They praised al-Julani’s professionalism, transparency, and moderate views, and the fact that he distanced himself from his jihadist roots.

He has confronted the lies propagated by institutions like the ICC [International Criminal Court], which distort justice and reward terror. Geert brings that same optimism to Europe, where it is needed even more,” Speaker Ohana said of the main power behind the government of The Netherlands.

Wilders, a leading critic of radical Islam, has long been a staunch supporter of the Jewish state, having volunteered for a year in the West Bank during his youth. Bezos’ Amazon, Zuckerberg’s Meta Each Donate $1 Million To Trump Inauguration

President-elect Donald Trump has received large donations from two of America’s top tech leaders in recent days for his inaugural fund as they look to curry favor with him.

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg — whose company owns Facebook, Instagram, Whats App, and more — gave a $1 million donation to the fund, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal separately reported that Amazon .com was also planning to donate $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund.

The donation is being prepared as Bezos, who serves as Amazon’s executive chairman, is expected to travel to Mar-a-Lago next week for a private meeting with Trump, the report said.

Zuckerberg had dinner with Trump late last month at Mar-a-Lago that The New York Times reported was “initiated” by Zuckerberg as he seeks to “insulate Meta” over any negative action his company could face from the incoming administration.

“It’s an important time for the future of American Innovation,” a META spokesperson said in a statement. “Mark was grateful for the invitation to join President Trump for dinner and the opportunity to meet with members of his team about the incoming Administration.”

‘As much and as quickly as possible’: Israeli settlers eye land in Syria, Lebanon

With the Israeli army advancing into Syria following Assad's fall, a group promoting settlements in Lebanon is casting its gaze eastward.

Within hours of the fall of the Assad regime, Israeli forces were already pushing into Syrian territory, conquering the Syrian side of Mount Hermon/Jabal A-Shaykh and the buffer zone between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that has been in place for more than half a century. But the army were not the only ones quick to react; so, too, was the Israeli settler movement.

“We have to conquer and destroy. As much as possible, and as quickly as possible,” wrote one member of Uri Tsafon — a group founded earlier this year to promote Israeli settlement of southern Lebanon — in the organization’s WhatsApp group. “We need to check according to the new laws in Syria whether Israelis are allowed to invest in real estate and start buying land there,” another member wrote. In another settler WhatsApp group, members shared maps of Syria and tried to identify potential areas for settlement.

The Nachala movement — led by Daniella Weiss, who has been spearheading efforts in recent months to resettle Gaza — expressed a similar sentiment in a post on Facebook: “Whoever still thinks it’s possible to leave our fate in the hands of a foreign actor — forsakes Israel’s security!” it said. “Jewish settlement is the only thing that will bring about regional stability and security for the State of Israel, along with a stable economy, national resilience, and deterrence.

“In Gaza, in Lebanon, in the entire Golan Heights including the ‘Syrian Plateau,’ and in the entire Mount Hermon,” it added — attaching a biblical map titled “Abraham’s Borders,” in which Israel’s territory includes the entirety of Lebanon as well as most of Syria and Iraq.

This is not mere talk; these groups mean business. Israeli Drone Strike Kills Two in South Lebanon Town of Khiam, Hours After IDF Withdrew

Lebanese military deployed to outskirts of Khiam, urges civilians to stay away

The southern Lebanese town of Khiam has increasingly become a centerpiece for the struggles with the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire. Just hours after Israeli troops withdrew from Khiam as part of the ceasefire, an Israeli drone has attacked the town square, killing at least two people and wounding others.

Lebanese PM Najib Mikati issued a statement condemning the attack on Khiam, noting that the Lebanese military is already deploying around the town as per the requirements of the ceasefire. He called for the US and French-led committee to “clarify” their stance on the ceasefire violations.

The committee is meant to oversee the ceasefire, but there have been nearly 200 Israeli violations in the past two weeks, killing around 30 Lebanese people, and the committee doesn’t appear to be doing much of anything about it.

Indeed, one of the first of those Israeli violations was in the town of Khiam as well. Less than a day after the ceasefire went into effect, Israeli troops shot Lebanese media trying to cover the ceasefire, wounding several.

Israel Kills Dozens More in Gaza, Including an Orthopedic Surgeon

Israeli strikes on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Thursday evening killed 33

Dr. Joda was believed to be the last orthopedic surgeon in northern Gaza and was injured in a previous strike but continued to work. The Health Ministry said that his killing brought the total number of medical staff killed by Israel since October 2023 to 1,057.

“We call on all workers in the health system in all countries of the world to stand in solidarity with our health teams in the Gaza Strip, where the sector is being subjected to genocide,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.

On Thursday evening, Israeli strikes pounded the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, targeting several homes. At least 33 Palestinians were reported killed in the attacks, including children. Medical sources told Al Jazeera that at least 71 Palestinians were killed in strikes across the Strip on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, the Health Ministry released its daily death toll update, saying 30 Palestinians were killed and 99 were wounded over the previous 24-hour period. The ministry only counts dead and wounded Palestinians who were brought to hospitals and morgues.

“There are still a number of victims under the rubble and on the streets, and ambulance and civil defense crews cannot reach them,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.

Law enforcement authorities from all across the continent came together for the EMPACT Joint Action Days South East Europe (JAD SEE) 2024. From a coordination centre set up in Sarajevo, colleagues from 26 countries took decisive action against key criminal threats in the region. The JAD SEE 2024 saw the joint capacities and resources of the European Union and its international partners target multiple criminal threats, including trafficking in human beings, migrant smuggling, drug and illegal firearms trafficking, and the fight against high-risk criminal networks. 796 individuals were arrested, 316 investigations initiated and 442 weapons seized as a result of the massive operation, which involved 31 109 officers.

The scale and scope of this operation were designed to be as wide as possible. Checks and searches encompassed both the physical and the online world, including the clear web, the dark web, and social media platforms. Notably, these ‘cyber patrols’ involved not only law enforcement authorities but also prosecutors from different jurisdictions, adding significant value to their operational effectiveness.

In total, results of the JAD SEE 2024, which was held under the motto “Uniting Forces Against Organised Crime”, include:

The story is simple. In stark violation of international law, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ministers claim the right to rule over 7 million Palestinian Arabs.

When Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands leads to militant resistance, Israel labels the resistance “terrorism” and calls on the U.S. to overthrow the Middle East governments that back the “terrorists.”

The U.S., under the sway of the Israel Lobby, goes to war on Israel’s behalf.

The fall of Syria this week is the culmination of the Israel-U.S. campaign against Syria that goes back to 1996 with Netanyahu’s arrival in office as prime minister. The Israel-U.S. war on Syria escalated in 2011 and 2012, when former U.S. President Barack Obama covertly tasked the C.I.A. with the overthrow of the Syrian Government in Operation Timber Sycamore.

That effort finally came to “fruition” this week, after more than 300,000 deaths in the Syrian war since 2011.

Syria’s fall came swiftly because of more than a decade of crushing economic sanctions, the burdens of war, the U.S. seizure of Syria’s oil, Russia’s priorities regarding the conflict in Ukraine, and most immediately, Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah, which was the key military backstop to the Syrian government.

No doubt Assad often misplayed his own hand and faced severe internal discontent, but his regime was targeted for collapse for decades by the U.S. and Israel.

Before the U.S.-Israel campaign to overthrow Assad began in earnest in 2011, Syria was a functioning, growing middle-income country. In January 2009, the IMF Executive Board had this to say:

“Executive Directors welcomed Syria’s strong macroeconomic performance in recent years, as manifested in the rapid non-oil GDP growth, comfortable level of foreign reserves, and low and declining government debt. This performance reflected both robust regional demand and the authorities’ reform efforts to shift toward a more market- based economy.”

Since 2011, the Israel-U.S. perpetual war on Syria, including bombing, jihadists, economic sanctions, U.S. seizure of Syria’s oil fields, and more, has sunk the Syrian people into misery.
