Ukraine triggers ‘state of emergency’ in EU aspirant

Moldova will have “insufficient energy resources” if Kiev carries out its vow to cancel a transit deal with Moscow

Moldova's parliament has declared that a 60-day national state of emergency will go into effect on December 16, prompted by Ukraine’s decision not to provide the country with Russian pipeline gas after the end of the year.

Lawmakers in the EU candidate state's capital, Chisinau, voted to impose the measure “due to insufficient energy resources,” according to a statement the parliament released on X (formerly Twitter).

Declaring a state of emergency allows the government to respond rapidly and curb energy exports, according to Reuters.

Ukraine’s transit network is connected to pipeline systems of Moldova, Romania, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. The EU still receives around 5% of its gas from Russia via Ukraine, according to the latest data.

Moldova receives Russian pipeline gas via Ukraine’s transit network under a five-year contract with Gazprom, which was signed in October 2021.

The transit agreement between Russia’s energy giant and Ukraine’s state energy firm Naftogaz, however, is set to expire on December 31.Ukraine has reiterated that the deal will not be extended, and the flow will drop to zero on January 1. (BTW Ukraine makes a lot of money for the transit tax on their country, they don't care)

Moldovan Vice-Premier Oleg Serebrian claimed on Friday thatUkraine would not agree to continue transit “just for the sake of Hungary and Moldova.” The latter is one of the few EU countries which remains dependent on Russian gas.

In November, Moldova’s then-energy minister Victor Parlicov stressed that maintaining transit through Ukraine would be the best scenario not only for his country, but for all parties involved.

Parlicov made the statement following talks with Gazprom. The Russian supplier reiterated its readiness to continue transit, provided Moldova and Ukraine reach an agreement. According to the minister, Chisinau reached out to Kiev, but no decision had been made.

Earlier this month Moldova’s pro-EU President Maia Sandu fired Parlicov for failing to tackle the country’s energy crisis.

Moldova has pursued a distinctively pro-Western course since 2020, when President Sandu came to power. Her government has been actively pushing for EU and NATO membership, going as far as banning critics and calling on Brussels to sanction those opposed to the idea. Moldova was granted candidate status by the EU in 2022.

Prime Minister Recean has urged the state organs responsible for energy to prepare for various scenarios ahead of the January 1 cut-off.One option is gas deliveries via the TurkStream pipeline. The conduit runs from Russia to Türkiye via the Black Sea and then continues to the border with EU member Greece. From there, the gas could flow via Bulgaria and Romania to Moldova.

(I hope the EU and Europe are happy with their shitty relationship with Ukraine, who doesn’t care if anyone freezes. They made a deal with a terrorist little devil. They are probably trying to punish Hungary more than Moldova.)

Kremlin reacts to Trump’s stance on long-range strikes into Russia

Moscow shares the US president-elect’s view that such attacks are escalatory, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

US President-elect Donald Trump’s statement regarding Ukraine’s use of Western long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia is completely in line with Moscow’s stance on the matter, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Peskov was commenting on Trump’s sharp criticism this week of President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Kiev to conduct long-range strikes on Russian territory with US-supplied missiles.

“The statement itself completely coincides with our position,” Peskov told reporters. “In this case we have the same vision of the reasons for the escalation.” He added that Trump’s thinking on the matter “appeals” to Russia.

“It is obvious that Trump understands what exactly is escalating the situation around the conflict,” he said.

At the same time, the Russian presidential spokesman warned against “jumping ahead of ourselves” and predicting the actions of the incoming US administration.

“Let’s wait until the moment when the president-elect takes his post in the Oval Office,” he advised.

In an interview with Time magazine, which named him the 2024 Person of the Year, Trump stated that he disagrees “very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia,” asking rhetorically: “Why are we doing that?”

Trump said that missile strikes deep into Russia’s internationally recognized territory are “just escalating this war and making it worse,” and described such attacks as a “very big mistake.”

The US president-elect’s comments came a day after the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian forces had launched six US-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles towards an airfield in Rostov Region.

In response to Kiev’s attacks, Moscow hit a number of Ukraine’s key energy facilities overnight into Friday.

Russia has repeatedly warned that long-range strikes using foreign-made weapons would escalate the conflict and be seen as NATO’s direct participation in the hostilities.

In late November, Moscow used its new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile system for the first time, striking the Yuzhmash military plant in the Ukrainian city of Dnepr.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned at the time that if Ukraine’s attacks deep inside Russia continue, Moscow reserves the right “to use our weapons against the military facilities of those countries that allow the use of their weapons against our facilities.

MEPs visit former Soviet republic and march with pro-EU protesters (VIDEOS)

(Sent by the US State Department, all because Georgia enacted a FARA bill to disclose NGO’s and who they are sent by, just like the US has. The NGOs are currently their protesting in Georgia to get the DS EU in charge)

The group of European lawmakers has also held closed-doors meetings with Georgia’s opposition and pro-Western president

A delegation of six European Parliament lawmakers arrived in Georgia on Thursday, where they are taking part in ongoing pro-EU protests and meeting key opposition figures.

The visit was intended to “show solidarity with Georgians fighting for a European future,” one of the MEPs, Lithuanian lawmaker Rasa Jukneviciene, has said.

The delegation met with the country’s pro-Western President Salome Zourabichvili, as well as representatives of the opposition coalitions and NGOs. Jukneviciene also described the visit as a “fact-finding mission.” The meetings with the opposition figures were positioned as being “very important for drawing the right conclusions.”

The MEPs have openly rallied support for the ongoing protests in the country, reiterating the EU’s stance on recent general elections. The polls “were neither free nor fair,” Polish MEP Michal Szczerba claimed, urging Tbilisi to scrap the results and hold a new one.

“Therefore, we ask the Georgian government to rerun these elections with certain conditions and according to the standards we respect in the European Union,” he stated.

In the evening, the delegation took part in the protests, joining the rally in central Tbilisi. The MEPs shared footage from the scene online, showing the protesters carrying Georgian and EU flags.

The country was plunged into a crisis following the October vote, which resulted in a landslide win for the ruling Georgian Dream party. The opposition parties, however, claimed the polls had been rigged, with the assessment backed by the EU and Zourabichvili, who called the election a Russian “special operation” and urged citizens to protest against the outcome. However, she snubbed an invitation by the country’s prosecutor general’s office to provide possible evidence to back up her assertion.

Georgian election officials criticized Zourabichvili for her “unfounded attacks” on the Central Election Commission, pointing out that independent observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) had “positively assessed the elections” and found no significant violations.

The protests escalated late last month after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said he would freeze accession talks with the EU until 2028. Apart from that,Zourabichvili has refused to leave office before a new general election is held, although she is obliged to recognize the upcoming presidential election on December 14.

According to the latest revision of the Georgian Constitution, the head of state, who holds largely ceremonial powers, is chosen by an electoral college consisting of 300 members, half of which is composed of MPs and the other half selected from representatives of various Georgian regions. The election is apparently set to oust Zourabichvili, given that the only candidate, Mikheil Kavelashvili, was fielded by the ruling party, with the opposition insisting on holding new parliamentary elections instead.

Kiev demands more air defense systems from West

Russia responded to a recent Ukrainian missile attack by targeting the country’s energy infrastructure overnight

Kiev is in urgent need of 20 new Western air defense systemsto protect the country from Russia’s long-range missile and drone attacks, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga said on Friday.

Sibiga took to X, formerly Twitter, in the aftermath of the latest massive strike launched by Moscow in retaliation for Ukraine’s cross-border attacks on Russia using Western-supplied missiles. Explosions were reported all across Ukraine last night, with electricity supplies disrupted across several regions.

“Massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine this morning, primarily targeting the energy system. Russia aims to deprive us of energy. Instead, we must deprive it of the means of terror.I reiterate my call for the urgent delivery of 20 NASAMS, HAWK, or IRIS-T air defense systems,”the minister wrote.

All the systems listed by Sibiga fire short- to medium-range anti-aircraft missiles. Such weaponry has been supplied to Kiev by its Western backers and has been seen in active use during the conflict.

Russia launched a major long-range attack on Ukraine overnight, primarily targeting the country’s critical infrastructure. According to the Russian military, the strike reached its goals, as all of the designated targets were successfully hit.

“In response to the use of American long-range weapons, Russia’s Armed Forces launched a massive strike with high-precision long-range air and sea-based weapons and UAVs at critical fuel and energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine that support the operation of the military industrial complex,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The latest attack oninternationally recognized Russian territorywith Western-supplied weaponry took place on Wednesday, when Kiev targeted a military airfield located near the city of Taganrog in Rostov Region. (Trump stated that in the Time magazine interview. Kek)

According to the Russian military, six US-supplied ATACMS ballistic missiles were used in the attack. Two were shot down and the rest were disrupted using electronic warfare measures. The strike inflicted minor damage on the airfield’s administrative buildings, as well as damaged multiple civilian cars at an adjacent parking lot, the military said.

Unreleased Michael Jackson tracks found in storage unit

A US resident has discovered 12 ‘new’ songs recorded by the King of Pop between 1989 and 1991

Twelve original unknown tracks from the late King of Pop Michael Jackson have been discovered in a storage unit in California, Hollywood Reporter wrote on Friday.

The unexpected find was made by former traffic police officer turned stay-at-home dad, Gregg Musgroveduring a “treasure hunting” venture, when he was informed about a storage unit he had purchased in Van Nuys, California.

The unit had previously belonged to music producer Bryan Loren. Inside, Musgrove found tapes containing 12 unreleased tracks that Jackson had recorded between 1989 and 1991,before releasing his album Dangerous.

Under US law, a storage unit is considered legally abandoned 60 to 90 days after non-payment, depending on the state.

At that time, the units may be auctioned off to bidders who gamble on their contents.

Musgrove stated that while some songs had been rumored or partially leaked, several are complete originals. “I’ve gone to all the fan sites. Some of them [the songs] are rumored to exist, some of them have been leaked a little bit,” Musgrove told The Hollywood Reporter.“A couple aren’t even out there in the world.”

Among the notable tracks is“Don’t Believe It,”which appears to address media rumors about the pop star. Jackson, who died in 2009 at age 50, faced controversy over accusations of sexually abusing minors. Despite the scandals and their impact on his reputation, his commercial success as an artist remains strong.

Another track, “Truth on Youth,” reportedly a duet with LL Cool J, showcases Jackson’s versatility as he rhymes alongside the iconic rapper.

Musgrove and his attorney reached out to the Jackson Estate, which has continued to capitalize on the singer’s image and music use for commercial purposes since his death, about the tapes earlier this year.

The estate reportedly conducted its own research into the recordings, but declined to purchase them for undisclosed reasons. The estate provided Musgrove with a letter clarifying that they do not claim ownership of the tapes.

They emphasized, however, that any potential buyer would not own the copyright to the recordings or compositions, as those rights remain with the estate.Consequently, the tapes cannot be released publicly.

Musgrove plans to present the tapes to major auction houses soon, potentially attracting celebrity memorabilia collectors.

Biden signs off on more arms for Ukraine

The latest package is worth $500 million, the Pentagon has said

Outgoing US President Joe Biden has authorized a new $500 million weapons package for Ukraine, as his administration seeks to spend every dollar allocated by Congress before leaving office in January.

The package is the 72nd of its kindand includes additional air defense, artillery, drones, and armored vehicles, White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby told the media during a regular briefing on Thursday.

The Pentagon estimated the value of the weapons being sent under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) at $500 million. The tranche includes HIMARS rocket launchers, artillery munitions, anti-radar missiles, different types of military vehicles, and other hardware, the statement said.

Last week, theUS announced a security package worth $988 millionauthorized through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI),a separatemilitary assistance mechanism.

TheBiden administration has vowed to drain dry the reservesof Ukraine-related funding, after Donald Trump won the presidential election in early November. The Republican has said that he will end the Ukraine conflict, potentially cutting aid to Kiev to put pressure on it.

The outgoing US government has also authorized Ukrainian strikes with donated long-range missiles deep into Russia, crossing what Moscow perceived as a red line. The move has put the US and other NATO members in direct conflict with Russia, as opposed to their waging a proxy war against the country, according to officials in Moscow.

“I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. Why are we doing that?” Trump said of the decision this week in an interview with Time magazine, which chose him as its person of the year for 2024. “I think that is a major escalation. I think it is a foolish decision,” the president-elect added.

Moscow has said that no amount of Western aid can alter the outcome of the conflict. Biden is working to leave behind “a difficult legacy” of ramped up tensions with Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has asserted.

Daniel Penny to be JD Vance's guest at this weekend's Army-Navy game

Penny was acquitted of the charges he faced in New York over the 2023 chokehold death of homeless man Jordan Neely.

Dec. 13, 2024, 9:25 AM EST By Henry J. Gomez and Rebecca Shabad

Daniel Penny, the man who was found not guilty in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely, will be the personal guest of Vice President-elect JD Vance at the Army-Navy game on Saturday.

Vance and Penny will watch the game from Trump's suite at the Washington Commanders Stadium in Landover, Maryland, at 3 p.m. ET.

"Daniel’s a good guy, and New York’s mob district attorney tried to ruin his life for having a backbone," Vance wrote in a post on X."I’m grateful he accepted my invitation and hope he’s able to have fun and appreciate how much his fellow citizens admire his courage."

NOTUS, a publication of the Allbritton Journalism Institute, first reported Penny's plan to attend the game.

Penny, a former Marine, was acquitted Monday in the New York chokehold case, with a jury finding him not guilty of criminally negligent homicide.

Prosecutors accused Penny, who was 24 years old at the time of the incident, of causing Neely's death after putting the 30-year-old homeless man in a chokehold on a subway train in May 2023.

Neely, who had a history of mental illness, had been shouting and acting erratically when he boarded the subway. Juan Alberto Vazquez, who witnessed the altercation on the subway, told NBC's New York station at the time that Neely was being aggressive.

“The man got on the subway car and began to say a somewhat aggressive speech, saying he was hungry, he was thirsty, that he didn’t care about anything, he didn’t care about going to jail, he didn’t care that he gets a big life sentence,” Vazquez told the station in Spanish. “That ‘it doesn’t even matter if I died.’”

Synthetic cannabinoids were determined to be in his system when he died.

During the trial, a medical examiner testified that Neely died from “compression of neck (chokehold)."

The jury in the case was deadlocked last week on the more serious charge of manslaughter, causing the judge to dismiss the charge, which carried a maximum sentence of up to four years.

The case divided many people along political and racial lines, as Penny is white and Neely was Black.

Charges against Penny became a hot-button issue in the US, with Republicans such as Trump and Vance accusing the Democrats ruling New York of wanting to criminalize the defense of self and others, while Democrats tried to present the incident as driven by racism and bigotry.

During the trial, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office repeatedly referred to Penny only as “the white man” and claimed he had “choked” Neely, setting up comparisons to the 2020 death of George Floyd that triggered a wave of race riots across the US.

After Penny was acquitted earlier this week, Vance said in a post on X, "I have not said much about this case out of fear of (negatively) influencing the jury.

But thank God justice was done in this case. It was a scandal Penny was ever prosecuted in the first place."

First known map of night sky found in old parchment

Newsroom 20.10.2022 • 09:00

The legendary star catalog drafted by ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchuswhich had been feared lost has been found hidden in a medieval parchment that originated in the library of the Greek Orthodox Monastery of St Catherine in Sinai, Egypt.

Scholars said they discovered what appears to be part of Hipparchus’ star catalog, which is the earliest known attempt to record the entire sky, hidden beneath Christian manuscripts.

The manuscript came from St Catherine’s Monastery but the majority of its 146 leaves, or folios, are currently at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC.

The Codex Climaci Rescriptus, a compilation of Syriac manuscripts written in the 10th or 11th centuries, is included on the pages. However, the codex is a palimpsest, which is parchment scraped clear of prior text so that it could be reused.

The extract was published online in the Journal for the History of Astronomy.
