NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

December 15, 2024

Geminid Meteors over a Snowy Forest

Meteors have been flowing out from the constellation Gemini. This was expected, as mid-December is the time of the Geminid Meteor Shower. Pictured here, over two dozen meteors were caught in successively added exposures taken over several hours early Saturday morning from a snowy forest in Poland. The fleeting streaks were bright enough to be seen over the din of the nearly full Moon on the upper right. These streaks can all be traced back to a point on the sky called the radiant toward the bright stars Pollux and Castor in the image center. The Geminid meteors started as sand sized bits expelled from asteroid 3200 Phaethon during its elliptical orbit through the inner Solar System.

Unidentified space company planning $1.8 billion in launch infrastructure, 600 jobs at Cape

12:05 p.m. ET Dec 13, 2024

An unidentified space company plans to invest about $1.8 billion in capital improvements and create 600 jobs by developing a high-volume production facility, high bay and launch infrastructure for heavy-lift rocket hardware at Cape Canaveral, a Space Florida agenda memo indicates.

Space Florida officials declined to divulge further details on the colossal undertaking — which dwarfs most Brevard County secretive aerospace projects in scope.

What is the unidentified company? An obvious contender is SpaceX: Company officials hope to start launching Starship-Super Heavy mega-rocket systems from the Space Coast by 2026.

An environmental study remains ongoing to rebuild Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station for Starship launch and landing operations.

Other smaller space companies are also chasing heavy-lift rocket development, but remain in the early stages.

Blue Origin is the notable exception, with its first 320-foot-plus New Glenn rocket standing vertical at the pad awaiting its maiden launch.

Here's what we know: The Space Florida board of directors, which is chaired by Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez, will discuss the proposed construction — which bears the secretive code name "Project Hinton" — during a special meeting Wednesday afternoon.

The agenda memo said the 600 jobs will boast estimated annual salaries of $93,000. Project Hinton will enable rapid manufacturing, assembly, and integration of heavy-lift flight hardware — and "significantly increase the volume and mass of payload to orbit from Florida."

"Time is of the essence due to significant customer demand driven by a considerable increase in space-based activities.

Company plans to begin ordering of long-lead items and construction in January 2025," the memo said.

By way of comparison, Blue Origin invested more than $1 billion revamping Launch Complex 36 — a former Atlas rocket pad — by building vehicle integration, first-stage refurbishment, propellant facilities and an environmental control center, per the company website. Construction wrapped up in 2021 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Regarding Project Hinton, the Space Florida board is expected to consider:

Up to $50 million in matching grant funds "for high-volume production facility, high bay, and related infrastructure."

Up to $15 million for utility improvements, including power modifications and industrial wastewater treatment.

The unidentified company applied for funding via the Florida Spaceport Improvement Program, in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation.

In an August vote, Space Florida authorized negotiations with FDOT for Project Liftoff.

That was SpaceX's plan to construct three new rocket landing zones at Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

SpaceX and FDOT were each expected to pay $13.3 million, with infrastructure project completion scheduled by the end of 2026.

Japan space firm postpones third attempt at launch

Dec. 15 04:31 pm JST

A company aiming to become Japan's first private firm to put a satellite into orbit postponed its rocket launch again on Sunday, due to strong winds.

Tokyo-based Space One's Kairos rocket was to make its third blast-off from the company's launch pad in the rural western region of Wakayama at 11 a.m., after Saturday's scheduled launch was aborted about 20 minutes before lift-off.

Space One said it will try again on Wednesday morning.

Private firms are offering cheaper and more frequent space exploration opportunities than governments, and Space One hopes to emulate Elon Musk's SpaceX, which has contracts with NASA and the Pentagon.

But first, it needs to get off the ground.

The solid-fuel Kairos, carrying a small government test satellite, lifted off for the first time in March from the Space One launch pad, dubbed Spaceport Kii.

But seconds later, technical problems were detected and a self-destruct order was sent to the 18-meter rocket.

It erupted in flames, sending white smoke billowing around the remote mountainous area.

Hundreds of spectators, gathered at public viewing areas including a nearby waterfront, witnessed the dramatic scene.

In the second launch attempt, the rocket was supposed to carry five satellites, including one from the Taiwan Space Agency and others designed by Japanese students and corporate ventures.

Space One was founded in 2018 by major businesses including Canon Electronics, IHI Aerospace, construction firm Shimizu, and the government-run Development Bank of Japan.

The company is hoping to establish itself in a competitive international field by launching small rockets, quickly, for businesses seeking to put satellites into space.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is also on a mission to become a major player for satellite launches.

JAXA's next-generation H3 launch system had experienced multiple failed take-off attempts before a successful blast-off in February.

Also this year, Japan landed an unmanned probe on the moon albeit at a crooked angle making it just the fifth country to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface.

But JAXA had to delay the launch of a compact, solid-fuel Epsilon S rocket after a recent engine test resulted in a large fire.

There's a weird, disappearing dark spot on Saturn's moon Enceladus

December 15, 2024

Of all the planets in our solar system, Saturn is by far the mooniest. And that's saying a lot. Sure, we're here in our corner with our single friend, The Moon™, but Neptune wanders the universe with 16 known companions, Uranus boasts 28 of its own, and there are a whopping 95 moons in the Jovian neighborhood.

But Saturn? It's in a different league. This ringed world has 146 of these natural satellites. Yet, you may be surprised to know that even with such a lovely Saturnian selection, scientists are mostly pining over just one.

The golden child in Saturn's system is named Enceladus, and it's so special because scientists believe it to be a prime location to search for life beyond Earth.

That belief stems from several discoveries made over the years, most obviously the fact that Enceladus seems to have a subsurface ocean that may host molecules known to help produce life as we know it.

Better yet, it also appears to have giant plumes of water ice deposits (think icy geysers shooting into space) connected to that ocean, which means spacecraft orbiting the world could theoretically catch evidence of those molecules if they're actually there.

Thus, when studying Enceladus, every detail really matters — which brings us to a new, very strange detail that scientists have their eye on: A weird, disappearing dark spot on this ice-capped moon.

No one quite knows what it is yet, but it may tell us something about those plumes that could hold the precious building blocks of life we seek.

This dark spot was one of the intriguing topics of discussion during the 2024 American Geophysical Union meeting in Washington, D.C. — where scientists congregated to search for the final pieces in cosmic puzzles they've been working on all year.

Awe filled the room as Cynthia B. Phillips, a planetary geologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory who presented the research, went into tremendous detail about how she and her team originally identified the dark spot.

It was thanks to her crewmember Leah Sacks, who helped pore through a bulk of data about Enceladus, collected by NASA's Voyager and Cassini missions.

The goal of the analysis was to compare images of the same region taken by these spacecraft in order to identify any changes on the moon's surface.

Possible changes could reveal awesome information about geologic activity on the world, but we'll get to that shortly; first let's dive into the mysteries of the dark spot.

"After staring at dozens and dozens of image pairs — she found something interesting," Phillips said during the conference.

"It's a little dark spot; it's about a kilometer across. She spotted it in an image from 2009 and looked again in 2012 and it seemed to be gone."

The dark spot was slowly fading away and getting smaller as the years progressed, and it never became more pronounced again. How weird, and especially so because Enceladus has what's called a high "albedo."

That basically means the world is really bright — it's therefore unexpected to find a dark spot on it at all, let alone one that's fading away. But before getting too excited, the scientists made sure to second guess themselves as much as possible to rule out the obvious caveats.

"First our question was," Phillips said, "'well, is it just that in some of these low resolution images, we're not seeing it, but it's really there?'" In short, the answer was a simple "no, probably not."

For example, a direct comparison of a 2010 image and a 2011 image shows the dark spot smaller in the 2011 image, even though the 2011 image had a higher resolution.

>>22169186

The next question was: Is this a shadow of some sort? Well, nope. Doesn't look like it.

The team pulled out some images with lighting coming from different directions, and the location of the spot seemed consistent.

The researchers even found a sequence of images with the dark spot where the light's angle of incidence (aka, the angle at which light strikes a surface) gets higher and higher.

If the spot were a shadow, you'd expect it to become more prominent with a higher incidence angle. This wasn't the case — it still became less distinct as time went on.

"We don't think it's topography; we don't think it's just a shadow," Phillips told Space.com.

And it didn't end here — the team also looked at images taken in UV light and color (the latter of which interestingly suggested that the dark spot is a reddish brown, unlike the usual blueish darker areas on other sections of the moon).

None of this suggested an easy explanation for the feature.

So, what is it?

"I think the more likely [case] is that it is some kind of a crater," Phillips told Space.com.

"And the reason why it's dark is maybe it's a chunk of some kind of dark material that landed on the surface, and you're either seeing some of that impactor left behind, and that's why it has that weird color, or you're seeing that when it impacted, it exposed some kind of bedrock of ice that was a different color."

But for almost every likely and mundane scenario in space research, there tends to exist a rare and exciting one serving as a counterpoint.

"The really cool explanation would be if it was actually coming up from underneath, somehow; if that reddish color was actually a sign of the interior composition of Enceladus," she said. "That's unlikely, but that'd be really interesting."

Still, although we don't know what the dark spot is, Phillips points out that there is indeed something pretty major we can derive from its presence: "'What is it?' I don't know the answer to that — but what I can say is: 'What can we use it for?'"

Remember the plumes

In a nutshell, the researchers think the dark spot appeared to be fading progressively because deposits from those icy Enceladus plumes might have covered it up.

"We know the whole surface is covered by plume deposits — like little layers of ice building up over time," Phillips said.

Alas, in theory, this makes a lot of sense. But when you really think about it, there are some outstanding issues here.

Unexplained drone sightings reported across western Massachusetts

Dec. 13, 2024 at 12:25 PM PST

Mystery drone sightings have been happening across the country dating back to November, and it turns out they’re also happening right here in western Mass.

Several viewers wrote into our newsroom on Friday saying they witnessed some unidentified drone activity as recently as Thursday night.

“I took my dog out last night. I just looked up at Mount Tom in the sky and instantly I was like, ‘oh what is that thing flying in the sky?’” an Easthampton resident from East Street recalled.

She told us at one point, she noticed what appeared to be multiple drones in the sky.

“I looked over to the western sky and I could see four of them in the sky at once, and I was just shocked I couldn’t believe what was happening.”

It’s not just western Mass that’s had these unidentified drone sightings.

New Jersey and New York have also had mystery lights in the sky, and across the border in Connecticut, state officials like Senator Richard Blumenthal are also weighing in.

“They should be shot down, if necessary,” Blumenthal said.

Federal security officials say the aircraft stoking fear across the country might not be drones. They say they can’t corroborate reported sightings.

“It appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully,” White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said.

Still, some experts remain doubtful.

“Fixed-wing aircraft don’t stop and hover and then go dark and take off,” intelligence analyst John Miller claimed.

Local witnesses we spoke to also seem skeptical – based on how the aircraft move and how many people have seen them.

“The government is saying this is no threat. I find it confusing to say we have no idea what it is, who is flying them or where they’re coming from then at the same time saying it’s not a threat.”

The resident we spoke with says she did reach out to the Easthampton non-emergency dispatch center reporting the drone sighting, but Easthampton Police tell us they never received any reports of drones or any other unidentified flying objects.

The police however are encouraging anyone who sees one of these sightings to contact the department.

Scientists discover alien-like creature in deep ocean

15 Dec 2024, 12:51 PM IST

Scientists have discovered a rare alien-like species that is likely to unlock the doors of unresolved mysteries of the hadal zone, identified as the deepest 45% of the ocean.

According to Sci. News, Dulcibella camanchaca is the first large, active predatory amphipod creature found in the deep-sea zone.

The creature was discovered in Atacama Trench, or the Peru-Chile Trench. It is one of the most geographically isolated hadal features of the ocean.

The rare living creature lacked “pigmented eyes”, displayed “apparent gigantism”, and surprisingly used to feed other creatures, revealed a research published in Systematics and Biodiversity.

Researches coined the genus name Dulcibella, which was inspired by Dulcinea del Toboso.

Its second name, camanchaca, has been derived from a term which means ‘darkness’ in local South American languages.

The new predatory amphipod was discovered around 7,902 metres below the sea in Atacama Trench.

The new creature was discovered last year during an Integrated Deep-Ocean Observing System (IDOOS) Expedition aboard the R/V Abate Molina.

The DNA and morphology data of the species point out that the newly-discovered creature belongs to a new genus.

Which highlights the scope of further such discoveries in the Atacama Trench which can be assumed as an endemic hotspot.

Scientists discovered four dulcibella camanchaca individuals at a depth of 7,902 m using a lander vehicle, which is an untethered platform used for carrying scientific equipment, including baited traps, to and from the ocean floor.

“This study’s collaborative effort and integrative approach confirmed Dulcibella camanchaca as a new species and highlight ongoing biodiversity discoveries in the Atacama Trench,” Sci.news quoted Dr. Carolina González, a researcher at the Instituto Milenio de Oceanografía.

One of the key reasons which makes the discovery of D. camanchaca an extraordinary achievement is the fact that it is a predator.

Most of the amphipods found in that depth rather scavenge or feed on detritus, natural waste material that is left after something has been used or broken up.

But D. camanchaca hunts prey making its first predetary amphipod documented in the zone.

NJ senator says feds are too ‘fearful’ of public reaction to tell the truth about mysterious drones

Dec. 15, 2024, 8:31 a.m. ET

The truth is out there — they’re just too scared to tell us.

A New Jersey state senator has bluntly accused the government of hiding the truth about the mysterious drones flying over the Garden State, saying the feds are too “fearful” of how people will react.

“Whatever these drones are doing, the government really doesn’t want us to know,” Sen. Jon Bramnick told NewsNation on Saturday, calling on the Department of Defense to “come clean with the American public” about what was really happening.

“What that must mean is they’re more concerned with us getting knowledge and being afraid of that information than having no knowledge and having all these questions,” claimed the Republican from the state’s 21st Legislative District.

“There must be something going on that they can’t tell us because they’re so fearful of what the public’s gonna do when they hear what the drones are doing.”

“There’s no way the Department of Defense does not know what’s going on,” he claimed firmly.

Bramnick also noted that the FBI claiming to have obtained no evidence of a threat does not help the average citizen who may be concerned.

“‘There’s no evidence of a threat.’ You mean, they didn’t do anything sinister yet?” he suggested. “Yeah, I can probably make that statement and I have no top-secret clearance.”

He questioned how the government could let the public — as well as local leaders — become so frustrated if they had an answer they could easily share.

“Why would the government allow the public to be so frustrated? Why would the government allow a United States senator to be so frustrated? We heard this from both sides of the aisle,” he vented.

On Tuesday, Bramnick called for New Jersey to issue a limited state of emergency until officials could provide answers on the drones, which began popping up in parts of New York and New Jersey on Nov. 18.

Tensions over the mysterious flying objects hit a boiling point Saturday in New York after Gov. Hochul declared it’s time to take action.

“This has gone too far,” she said in a statement announcing that she asked federal authorities to authorize local police departments to shoot down drones.

President-elect Donald Trump also said he wants the feds to shoot a drone out of the sky.

“Let the public know, and now,” Trump urged. “Otherwise, shoot them down!”

Marjorie Taylor Greene Says Government 'In Control' of New Jersey Drones

Dec 15, 2024 at 7:52 AM EST

Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has accused the government of withholding information about the mysterious drones that have been sighted over New Jersey and New York.

Despite the FBI receiving thousands of reports from the public since the sightings began in November, a spokesperson for the bureau, told Congress on Tuesday "we don't know" who is behind them, even though multiple drones have been sighted flying near sensitive military sites.

On Saturday, an airport in New York was shut down for an hour after drone activity blocked its airspace.

In a Saturday post on X, Greene said she did not believe the official communications from the government.

"The government is in control of the drones and refuses to tell the American people what is going on. It really is that bad," she wrote.

In a Friday interview with the Daily Mail, Greene said the government was withholding information about the drones.

"I'm gonna call it total bulls*** that no one knows what these are. And I think it's a slap in the face to the American people to say they don't know what this is." Greene said.

She continued, "They can track down a guy that just killed a CEO, but they can't identify what these drones are and where they're coming from?'

"I think that is absolutely disgusting to lie to the American people like this, and the truth needs to be told about it."

Newsweek has contacted the FBI via email and Greene's office by phone for comment.

While federal agencies, including the Pentagon, maintain they do not know the drones' origin, the FBI said many of the sightings are likely misidentified manned aircraft.

Around 5,000 reports have been received via a national tip line established due to widespread calls for answers from civilians and local authorities, an FBI official told reporters on the Saturday press call.

Of these tips, however, the official said that "less than 100 leads have been generated and deemed worthy of further investigative activity."

Newsweek previously spoke to drone expert Vijay Kumar, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

He was skeptical of rumors that the drones were being sent by a foreign state actor, and suggested the evidence pointed toward it being a U.S. government operation.

Kumar said that even though the FBI said it does not know who is behind the drones, it does not mean the U.S. government as a whole is not involved, especially given that the drones have been sighted near airports and military bases, which are equipped with sophisticated radar.

"There's a lot of firewalling between agencies, so the fact that FBI says they don't know what's happening, that's very likely too, but I find it really hard to believe, as somebody who's lived in this country for 40 years, that the U.S. government doesn't know exactly what is going on."

We went drone hunting with Sen. Kim and found ‘mystery’ lights over N.J. reservoir

Updated: Dec. 14, 2024, 11:01 p.m..

A half a dozen cars had gathered Thursday night near a boat ramp at Round Valley Reservoir in Lebanon, one of the sites where residents say mysterious drones have been hovering for the past few weeks.

U.S. Sen. Andy Kim was riding along with a Clinton Township police officer to get a first-hand look at the alleged drones being reported across New Jersey.

The Democrat listened to Clinton Township Patrol Officer Francesca Escudero identify some of the lights moving over the water.

Some were planes, she said. Others were the alleged drones she has seen every night over Routes 22 and 31 as she patrols her Hunterdon County beat.

Off to the left over the reservoir, Kim watched as two bright lights moved close together, then farther apart. New Jersey’s newest U.S. senator joined others trying to capture video of unexplained objects on his cell phone.

A search of a flight tracker app tracking commercial airplanes showed no known planes in that section of the sky.

On Friday morning, Kim posted photos and video from the site on his social media account calling the lights he saw drones.

“We’re seeing a number of different drones, probably four or five that we can see right now at any given time flying low over the ridge line here,” Kim said.

It was unclear if the lights were actually drones. Experts have said it is difficult to distinguish drones from distant or approaching airplanes when viewing them from miles away.

“One thing we know is that humans, when they see something in the sky, they’re really bad at telling how far away it is,” said Ian Petchenik, communications director for the live flight tracker Flightradar24.. “Our depth perception is awful, particularly at night.”

Hundreds of people commented on Kim’s social media post Friday, including some who used maps and computer models to argue the lights Kim saw were distant planes.

Kim, who was sworn in three days earlier to the Senate seat vacated by convicted Sen. Robert Menendez, said he wanted to take the tour of the area with local police so he could understand what people have been seeing.

Hours earlier, the White House, FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security released statements casting doubt on whether any of the drone sightings in New Jersey were legitimate.

“Upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft that are being operated lawfully,” John Kirby, national security spokesman for President Joe Biden’s administration, said at a press briefing.

Kim said he wanted to see for himself.

“It’s important for people in my position not to shoot from the hip. That makes things more complicated,” Kim had said at police headquarters before the ride with police. “It’s my responsibility to show the people of New Jersey that we’re being responsive. They have every right to know.”

Escudero pointed at various lights in the sky as she drove the senator and staff members to spots where drones have been reported lately.

“We get 10 to 12 a shift,” she said of the drone sightings. “Unfortunately, by the time we get there, they’re already gone.”

She said officers take reports and urge residents to report the sightings to the FBI, the agency leading the investigation.

As Escudero steered from the Job Lot store on Route 31 down Gray Rock Road in Clinton, she said a call had come in from someone a mile down. It’s not the same people reporting drones every night in the township of 31,000.

“It’s different people from different parts of town every night,” she said. “They’re happy we come out, even though there’s little we could do.”

When Escudero stopped at the Spinning Wheel Diner in Lebanon, Kim pointed out a light flying low through the trees. That appeared to be a drone, Escudero said. She estimates the biggest drone she has seen to be the size of a State Police helicopter.

Throughout the night, many of the lights Kim and police spotted did not show up on two flight tracker apps that show commercial airplanes.

As Escudero pulled into the boat ramp near Round Valley, the state’s largest reservoir, she stopped to talk to a police sergeant parked at the entrance. They discuss how the alleged drones tend to fly north to south, unlike the planes they’re used to seeing over the area.

Shortly after 9 p.m., a handful of people were watching the sky over the reservoir. Before the drone sightings, there were never this many people here, Escudero said.

Some of those gathered asked the police officer why residents can’t shoot the alleged drowns down. But, state and federal officials have said shooting down any aircraft is illegal and potentially dangerous.

“This is getting creepy,” said Tina Fine, of Lebanon, who said she has seen what appeared to be nine drones at a time. After seeing the two lights above the reservoir hovering close together, she got on her phone to a family member, urging them to come see.

Kim talked briefly about the government’s response to the alleged drone sightings, and what detection tools might be used to solve the mystery.

“There are federal assets they are using,” he said. “They have new equipment not specific to this, and brought it out here.” He offered no other details.

At the last stop of the tour, North Hunterdon Regional High School in Clinton, Kim watched the sky over the school’s playing fields and Route 31. He said the tour through Hunterdon County surprised him.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect, I’ll be honest,” the senator said. “I thought we might not see anything, but so clearly there’s something that’s not what it should be here. It’s information that’s very clearly not a plane.

Kim said he has flown drones himself. He previously worked as a civilian advisor to generals in Afghanistan and served on the National Security Council under President Barack Obama.

“These definitely don’t seem like the ones from Best Buy,” he said of the lights he viewed in the sky.

Standing outside North Hunterdon Regional High School, Kim recorded a video for constituents, telling them he would follow up with the FBI, Homeland Security, and Gov. Phil Murphy’s office.

“You can see some drones out along the ridge line here,” he said, pointing above the high school sports field. “We’re counting oftentimes five, six, seven or more at any given time.”

“I’m going to stay on top of this and try to run this down,” Kim added.

Trump insider claims drones are part of government's Project Blue Beam: 'The coming days will not be good'

Updated: 10:29 EST, 15 December 2024

A close advisor to Donald Trump has issued a grave warning to the American public as he claims the nationwide drone sightings - that are feeding a growing sense of hysteria across the US - are linked to a chilling government plot.

Charlie Kirk, 31, a conservative political activist and close confidant of president-elect Trump, took to X on Friday to claim America is 'f****d' as he suggested the recent mass drone sightings are part of Project Blue Beam.

'WE ARE F****D. THE DRONES ARE PROJECT BLUE BEAM,' Kirk posted on X.

'LOOK FOR VIDS OF THEM TRANSFORMING FROM BALLS OF LIGHT TO PLANES WHEN FILMED TO SEE FOR YOURSELF.

THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT INVESTIGATING. THEY ARE DOING THIS. WHATEVER YOU SEE IN THE COMING DAYS IS NOT GOOD.'

Project Blue Beam is a conspiracy theory dating to the 1990s that claims global elites, including government and military organizations, are planning to use advanced technology to stage celestial events in order to manipulate the world's population.

The theory has recently found traction again online as commentators such as Kirk claim that the US government could stage an alien invasion as a pretext for imposing authoritarian rule.

The outlandish theory is among many that have been amplified over the last week in the vacuum of information left in the wake of the Biden administration's failure to tell the public where the drones are coming from or who is behind them.

And Donald Trump called for urgent action yesterday, taking to the Truth Social platform to say: ‘Mystery drone sightings all over the country.

Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!’
