Education
Balaji graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2021 with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. During his academic tenure, he distinguished himself in programming competitions, securing the 31st position in the ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) 2018 World Finals. He also secured first place in both the 2017 Pacific Northwest Regional and Berkeley Programming Contests.[6]
Career
Suchir Balaji spent nearly four years as an artificial intelligence researcher at OpenAI. Among other projects, he helped gather and organize the enormous amounts of internet data the company used to build its online chatbot, ChatGPT.[7]
Death
On December 16, 2024, authorities in San Francisco discovered Balaji dead in his apartment while doing a wellness check. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing. The police have ruled that there was "no evidence of foul play" found during the investigation, and the medical examiner’s office confirmed the cause of death as suicide.[8][9] His death has prompted public and media interest, particularly given his whistleblowing claims.[10][11]
