Russia calls Israel’s annexation of Golan Heights unacceptable — MFA
"Israel must return to the full compliance with the well-known 1974 agreement with Syria," Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stressed.
MOSCOW, December 16. /TASS/. Russia has issued a warning to "hotheads" in Israel against "seizing opportunities" amid the evolving situation in Syria, emphasizing that the annexation of the Golan Heights is absolutely unacceptable, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview with the TASS Analytical Center.
Asked which external actors are involved "behind the scenes" in the Syrian crisis, Ryabkov responded: "The United States is unmistakably there."
"Undoubtedly, Israel is the primary beneficiary of recent developments. I would like to caution certain 'hotheads' in West Jerusalem against overestimating their leverage. I would also remind them, among other things, that the annexation of the Golan Heights, as many are now saying, remains entirely impermissible. Israel must return to the full compliance with the well-known 1974 agreement with Syria."
On December 8, the Israeli military asserted control over the Syrian side of the Hermon mountain range in the Golan Heights without facing any resistance. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria is no longer applicable since Syrian troops left the area following the regime change in Damascus.
