Billionaire founder of Mango dies after falling 500ft into ravine on hike
The billionaire founder of high street fashion chain Mango has died after falling 500 feet down a ravine on a hiking trip outside Barcelona.
Isak Andic, 71, was walking with his son and other family members on a day trip in the Montserrat mountain range on Saturday.
Emergency services sent a helicopter and an ambulance to the scene but Andic was dead when they found him hours later.
Andic, who was the richest man in Catalonia and reported to be the fifth-richest in Spain, fell into the ravine while walking the path to the Salnitre caves, whose organic shapes inspired the design of Antonio Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia.
A guide told the El Pais newspaper that the area where the accident occurred, on a path which leads to the Montserrat monastery, could be difficult for hikers.
According to El Pais, Andic was walking with his partner, Estefanía Knuth, 51, a former professional golfer, and his son Jonathan, 43, an executive with Mango.
Andic also had two daughters, Judith and Sarah.
The Turkish-born businessman’s fortune was estimated at around £3.75 billion, having risen by £1.5 billion last year.
“It is with deep regret that we announce the unexpected death of Isak Andic, our non-executive chairman and founder of Mango, in an accident that occurred this Saturday,” said Toni Ruiz, the Mango chief executive.
“His departure leaves a huge void but all of us are, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements. It is up to us … to ensure that Mango continuesto be the project that Isak was ambitious and proud of.”
Salvador Illa Roca, the president of Catalonia’s government, said he was “dismayed by the loss” and described Andic as a “committed businessman” who “contributed to making Catalonia great and projecting it to the world”.
Andic moved with his family to the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia from Turkey in the 1960s and founded Mango in 1984.
Mango had a turnover of £2.6 billion in 2023 with 33 per cent of its business online and a presence in more than 120 markets.
