I don't think Mueller is a willing whitehat. I think Mueller is in deep do-do with regards to U1 and Trump offered him away out if he is helpful. Trump probably instructed him to do a proper investigation (how else can Trump be exonerated?), uncover connections to the Real badguys while he's kicking over rocks (which everyone in the deep-state will gladly help with), and then set the stage for the investigation to self-destruct just before or during the trial of Manafort. When it blows it will take out everyone standing around.
