Japan’s Honda and Nissan to reportedly begin merger talks

-Nissan and Honda plan to enter into negotiations for a merger to better compete in the rapidly changing automotive industry, the Nikkei newspaper reported Tuesday.

-Honda and Nissan are considering operating under a holding company, and soon will sign a memorandum of understanding, according to the report.

DETROIT — Japanese automakers Nissan Motor and Honda Motor reportedly plan to enter into negotiations for a merger to better compete in the rapidly changing global automotive industry, the Nikkei newspaper reported Tuesday.

Honda and Nissan are considering operating under a holding company, and soon will sign a memorandum of understanding, according to the report. They also look to eventually bring Mitsubishi Motors, in which Nissan is the top shareholder with a 24% stake, under the holding company.

The combined Nissan-Honda-Mitsubishi enterprise would equate to more than 8 million vehicle sales annually, according to Nikkei. That would place the company among the world’s largest automakers, but still below fellow Japanese automaker Toyota Motor, at 11.2 million in 2023, as well as German automaker Volkswagen, which last year reported sales of 9.2 million vehicles.

In similar statements, Honda and Nissan neither confirmed nor denied the report: “The reported content was not released by our company,” Honda said. “As announced in March of this year, Honda and Nissan are exploring various possibilities for future collaboration, leveraging each other’s strengths. We will inform our stakeholders of any updates at an appropriate time.”

The merger report follows the two Japanese automakers entering into a strategic partnership earlier this year on shared automotive components and software.

Such a tie-up would be the largest automotive industry merger since Fiat Chrysler joined with France-based PSA Groupe to form Stellantis

in January 2021.

Automotive consultants and other experts have recently been calling for an increase in mergers and acquisitions to share costs and better compete against rapidly expanding Chinese automakers as well as U.S. all-electric vehicle leader Tesla.

U.S.-traded shares of Honda closed up about 1% on Tuesday. Over-the-counter shares of Nissan, which is in the middle of a restructuring, jumped more than 11%.

AOC loses 131-84 to Gerry Connolly in battle to lead House Oversight

Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was defeated in her bid to be the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, losing to Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia.

Connolly, 74, bested the 35-year-old Ocasio-Cortez with 131 to 84 votes in what is seen as a blow for progressives who backed Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the progressive "Squad."

"I thank my colleagues for their support and the confidence they’ve placed in me to lead House Democrats on the Oversight Committee," Connolly said in a statement after being elected by the House Democratic Caucus.

Connolly called out "the Republican playbook," in which he accused Republicans of using "debunked conspiracy theories" and enabling "the worst abuses of the Trump Administration."

"This will be trench warfare." Connolly said. "Now is not the time to be timid. I promise the American people that our Committee Democrats will be a beacon of truth and prepared from day one to counter Republican gaslighting."

When Fox News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram asked Connolly if he was up for a potential fight against the Trump administration, Connolly said he was "raring to go."

"I did it before for four years, and bested them on a number of occasions, and I'm raring to go again," he said.

Connolly said that President-elect Trump "may feel more emboldened" after his reelection victory, though "that may also make him more reckless."

"There is a law in this land, and we're going to make sure it's enforced," Connolly said.

In his written statement, Connolly said Democrats will be "disciplined" and "laser focused on getting results on the kitchen table issues that are affecting the American people the most."

"We will stand up for our democracy and for truth," the statement said. "And we will protect the tremendous and historic progress we have made as House Democrats."

'Everything is out of control': Poilievre demands election before Trump takes office, amid Liberal chaos

OTTAWA — Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre demanded on Monday that the government call an immediate election as the Liberals were thrown into chaos by high-profile resignations, saying there is no time to waste with Donald Trump’s inauguration as president just over a month away.

Poilievre said it’s clear “everything is out of control” after finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland announced her shocking resignation from cabinet Monday morning, just hours before she was to deliver her fall fiscal update, which she had reportedly clashed with the Prime Minister’s Office over.

“It would be ideal to have the election done before the president takes office (on Jan. 20) or within the first week or two of his mandate,” Poilievre told reporters at a press conference on Parliament Hill. “So that Canadians would have a strong prime minister, with brains and backbone… facing down President Trump and our American competitors.”

Poilievre added that he wasn’t worried about springing a holiday election campaign on Canadians.

“I think right now, Canadians’ Christmas holidays are being interrupted by the NDP-Liberal hell they’re living under,” said Poilievre.

“And I think the best Christmas present we could give Canadians is to let them choose a new common-sense Conservative government that will bring home Canada’s promise.”

Freeland’s resignation letter posted to X on Monday morning took aim at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, accusing him of unseriously trotting out “costly political gimmicks” ahead of a potentially grueling trade dispute with the U.S.

“We need to take that threat extremely seriously,” read the letter. “That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war.”

Trump said last month that he’d slap a 25-per-cent tariff on both Canadian and Mexican imports unless the two countries cracked down on the flow of drugs and illegal migrants into the U.S. He’s since taken multiple shots at Trudeau on social media, recently calling him “governor” of “the great state of Canada.”

Freeland has indicated she will continue on as an MP and plans to run in the next federal election.

“Ms. Freeland has been Mr. Trudeau’s most trusted minister now for a decade. She knows him better than anyone, and she knows that he’s out of control,” Poilievre said, asserting that it is now up to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh to end his party’s support that has kept the minority Liberals in power for several years.

Earlier in the day, Housing Minister Sean Fraser announced he was leaving his post and not seeking re-election.

Liberal backbencher Chad Collins, one of the 23 Liberal MPs who circulated a letter asking Trudeau to resign in October, publicly reiterated his resignation call on Monday afternoon.

New Brunswick Liberal MP Wayne Long, one of a few others who in October has called for the prime minister’s resignation, told reporters at Parliament Hill on Monday it was “time to go” for Trudeau, adding that he saw a prorogation followed by a leadership race as the path forward.

As of writing, it was still unclear who would deliver the Liberals’ fall economic statement, scheduled to be tabled in the House around 4 p.m. ET today.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, next in line per an order-in-council, wouldn’t say Monday morning whether he’d be giving the update.

Third in the order of succession is Edmonton MP Randy Boissonnault, who resigned from cabinet last month over a pattern of misleading claims relating to his supposed Indigenous heritage.
