Guatemalan migrant arrested for setting sleeping NYC subway rider on fire, watching her burn to death: cops

A Guatemalan migrant has been arrested for allegedly lighting a sleeping subway rider on fire in Brooklyn on Sunday morning — then watching as his innocent victim burned to death in what the police commissioner called “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit.”

The savage killing — which happened at about 7:30 a.m. on an idling F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station — shocked commuters, MTA workers and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who said Sunday that the heinous crime “took the life of an innocent New Yorker.”

“As the train pulled into the station, the suspect calmly walked up to the victim, who was in a seated position at the end of a subway car … and used what we believe to be a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing, which became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds,” Tisch said at a press conference.

Patrolling cops smelled and saw the smoke, then followed it to the flame-covered woman, the commissioner said.

They extinguished the blaze, but the victim died at the scene.

Horrifying video obtained by The Post showed the suspect calmly looking on as flames consumed the still-unidentified woman, who stood inside the open subway car door.

A transit cop walked by, and seemed to pull out a radio and say something as they continued down the platform.

After the cop passed, the suspect got up as if to walk away — then the clip cut off.

In another video, cops yelled to the gathered crowd, “Did anybody see anything? Did anybody see anything?” as smoke poured from inside the subway car.

The suspect brazenly sat on a nearby bench as cops huddled around, pulling his hood up at one point just before an officer spoke to him.

“Do me a favor? Walk down there,” the cop said, motioning down the platform with his radio. “I need this space cleared up.”

The man stood up, then left the scene.

“Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car,” Tisch said.

“The body-worn cameras on the responding officers produced a very clear, detailed look at the killer.”

Later in day, three high schoolers called police to say they saw the man pictured in images released by the NYPD at the Jay and York Street station on the F line, according to Tisch and the NYPD’s Chief of Transit, Joseph Gulotta.

When transit officers responded to that call, they found the suspect already on another train leaving the station — and wearing the same gray hoodie, wool hat and paint-splattered pants he’d been wearing when he allegedly torched the woman.

Cops called ahead and halted the train at Herald Square. Then, they went from car to car until they found the suspect and arrested him, police officials said.

Tisch said the suspect had a lighter in his pocket when he was picked up.

“I want to thank the young people who called 911 to help,” Tisch said. “They saw something, and they said something, and they did something.”

Gulotta echoed her comments, calling the arrest “amazing work done by the public and the police working together.”

Police don’t believe the migrant and the victim knew each other before the killing, Gulotta added.

Earlier in the morning, cops, firefighters and medical examiner personnel clad in white Tyvek suits combed the tracks for evidence after they cordoned off the area.

Around 1 p.m., authorities carried a body bag containing the woman’s corpse out of the train and placed it on a gurney. Then they wheeled it over to a medical examiner van and moved it inside.

The woman has not yet been identified.

Wave of attempted arson attacks hits Russia, suspects recruited by fraudsters, says Tass

Moscow – Russia has seen a wave of attempted arson attacks targeting banks, shopping centres, post offices and government buildings over the last three days, according to media reports.

Around 20 separate cases of individuals trying to set off small explosive devices or launching fireworks into buildings have been recorded since Dec 20, mostly in Saint Petersburg, Moscow and the surrounding suburbs, according to the state-run Tass news agency and the independent Fontanka site.

Citing an unnamed law enforcement source, Tass reported that the people had been recruited by online fraudsters offering money for the attempted attacks.

Footage from surveillance cameras at some of the sites, shared on social media, appeared to show individuals using their mobile phones to film the fires they tried to set off.

Images from the aftermath of one attack showed a destroyed automated teller machine and nearby windows blown out, while another showed a burnt-out police car.

Cash machines of state-run banks, shopping centres, post offices, military enlistment offices, police vehicles and other administrative buildings have all been targeted.

State lender Sberbank reported a 30 per cent increase in attempted arson attacks over the last week, according to the RIA Novosti state news agency citing the bank’s press service.

Most of those detained after the attempted attacks were pensioners, Tass reported.

Sberbank said they had been recruited by scammers in Ukraine.

Moscow’s FSB security service has previously warned Russians that Ukrainian fraudsters, posing as security agents, have called elderly citizens asking them to carry out arson attacks in exchange for money, or to regain access to blocked accounts.

There was no reaction from Kyiv to the wave of attempted attacks or accusations they were being orchestrated from Ukrainian territory.

Several Russian military enlistment offices were hit in arson attacks using homemade Molotov cocktails since Moscow ordered troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

The recruitment buildings became more heavily targeted after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an unpopular conscription drive in September 2022 that saw more than 300,000 Russians forcibly drafted to fight in the conflict.

Russian courts have handed out several years-long prison sentences to those arrested for the attacks.

(December 8) Germany: Muslim ‘asylum seeker’ arrested for plotting jihad massacre at Augsburg Christmas Market

“German Police Foil Planned Islamist Terror Attack on Augsburg Christmas Market,” by Nick Hallett, European Conservative, December 6, 2024:

A 37-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker has been arrested in Augsburg, Germany, for allegedly planning a terrorist attack on the city’s popular Christmas market, local police confirmed.

Authorities acted after discovering evidence that the suspect, named as Ali Al-G, had scouted the market and engaged with Islamic State (IS) operatives online. The arrest has highlighted ongoing security concerns surrounding Christmas markets across Germany, which have been targets for Islamist terrorism in recent years.

Die Welt reports that Ali Al-G was detained on Wednesday evening at an asylum seekers’ residence in Augsburg. Police cited a warrant issued by the Augsburg District Court to secure his deportation under Section 58a of Germany’s Residence Act, a rarely invoked measure for individuals deemed an imminent security threat. According to law enforcement, Al-G had taken photographs of Augsburg’s Christkindlesmarkt and discussed using a vehicle to ram into the crowd, a method reminiscent of previous IS-inspired attacks in Europe.

Investigators revealed that Al-G had a history of posting pro-IS content on social media, including videos glorifying suicide bombings and executions. These activities first came to the attention of German authorities through a foreign intelligence agency. The suspect reportedly maintained contact with IS members and openly supported jihadist ideology in online forums….

You just have to visit Muslim countries and ask them about Jihad (Holy War). They will tell you right to your face they will die for their religion, and want to conquer the World under Islam, and they mean it. You'll think they're joking at first because of how calmly they say it.

If they are willing to convert to the Religion of the place they migrate to it can work. Also bringing in males past a certain age (20+) makes it much harder for them to assimilate. There are always exceptions but still need general rules. This particular issue isn't necessarily common sense since as I said, most people are just naive to how serious Muslims actually are to their religion. Like you think it's exaggerated in movies and the news but it's accurate.

If you got the balls go to a Muslim country and ask them about Jihad like I did. Helps if you're autistic I suppose but I already went on your guys behalf so make up your own damn mind whether you believe me or not. Don't feel sorry for the 'moderate' Muslims either because they won't get in the way of the extreme ones.

Tens of thousands of Serbs protest against President Aleksandar Vucic

Students and farmer unions organised the rally against President Aleksandar Vucic at a central square in Serbia's capital Belgrade on Sunday.

His tight grip on power has been challenged by weeks of street protests led by university students and the rally at Belgrade's Slavija Square was one of the largest in recent years. It was part of a wider movement demanding accountability over the Nov. 1 collapse of a canopy at a railway station in the country's north that killed 15 people.

Smaller rallies were also held in the cities of Nis and Kragujevac. The rally in Belgrade started with a 15-minute silence for the victims, and later chants of “You have blood on your hands!” were heard.

Many in Serbia blame the collapse on widespread corruption and sloppy work on the railway station building in the city of Novi Sad that was twice renovated in recent years as part of questionable mega projects involving Chinese state companies. Protesters demand that Vucic and those responsible face justice.

Serbia's popular theatre and movie actors joined the protest, with actor Bane Trifunovic describing Sunday’s rally as “a festival of freedom.”

In a show of confidence, the Serbian president on Sunday inaugurated a section of a newly built highway in central Serbia. Vucic said he wouldn't budge on opposition demands for a transitional government and accused his opponents of using students to try to seize power.

“We will beat them again,” said Vucic.“They (the opposition) don't know what to do but to use someone's children.”

Prosecutors have arrested 13 people over the Novi Sad tragedy, including a government minister whose release later fuelled public scepticism about the honesty of the investigation.

The weeks long protests reflect wider discontent with Vucic's rule. Vucic formally says he wants to take Serbia into the European Union but has faced accusations of curbing democratic freedoms rather than advancing them.

Opposition parties have said a transitional government that would prepare a free and fair election could be a way out of the political tensions as ruling party also have been accused of rigging past votes.

Serbia’s government has extended school winter holidays by starting them nearly a week earlier to grapple with widening student protests.

Classes at universities throughout the Balkan country have been suspended for weeks with students camping inside their faculty buildings. In recent days, more high school students have joined the movement. Occasional violence has erupted when pro-government thugs tried to disrupt the protests.

A group of farmers said on Sunday that police took away the tractor which they drove into central Belgrade ahead of the protest. In addition to the farmers, Serbia’s students also have received nationwide support from all walks of life including their professors, media personalities, lawyers and prominent individuals.

Vucic initially accused the students of launching protests for money but later said he has fulfilled their demands, including publishing documentation relating to the renovation work at the Novi Sad station.
