Russian Military Sealift Ship Sinks After Engine Room Explosion

Russian and Chinese cargo ships causing problems all over the place.

On Monday, a sanctioned Russian cargo ship sustained an engine room explosion off Spain and sank, leaving two crewmembers missing.

At about 1230 hours local time, the Ursa Major was under way eastbound in the Strait of Gibraltar when she sustained an explosion in the engine room. She slowed and deviated from course, then began to list.

AIS data shows that a Spanish Navy warship, the Spanish response vessel Clara Campoamor and a good Samaritan vessel - the Sparta, another sanctioned Russian cargo ship - came to the aid of the crew. 14 seafarers were rescued and two remained missing as of late Monday.

Ursa Major was operated by a subsidiary of sanctioned Russian defense company Oboronlogistika. She was a mainstay of the Russian supply route to Tartus, Syria, the Russian Navy's longtime base in the Eastern Mediterranean. The U.S. Treasury included the heavy lift vessel in a package of Ukraine-related sanctions in May 2022.

After the Ursa Major's sinking, Sparta resumed her eastward journey at low speed, making six knots and declaring her destination as Port Said, Egypt.

Putin's Troops Are Now Having To Rely On 'Outdated' Soviet-Era Equipment In Battle, UK Says

Vladimir Putin’s troops are now using Soviet-era equipment after enduring significant losses on the battlefield, according to the UK.

Russia is pushing forward into Ukraine at its fastest rate of the war so far, and now controls around a fifth of the beleaguered country – but it seems these offensives come with a high attrition rate for Moscow.

The latest update from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on X explained: “Russian military equipment losses in Ukraine continue to increase.

“Russia has lost over 3,600 main battle tanks and nearly 8,000 armoured vehicles since February 2022.”

The UK intelligence officers said this meant Moscow are having to rely on equipment which is more than three decades old.

“This has led to a reliance on outdated and poorly maintained Soviet-era equipment from strategic storage depots,” the MoD said.

“Armoured equipment is being hauled out of storage, upgraded where possible and sent to the frontline.

“Imagery has confirmed a large reduction of stored armoured vehicles at tank storage bases at Arsenyev, Buy and Ulan-Ude since 2022.”

Putin has not only lost equipment through his Ukraine land-grab, though.

Estimates suggest Russia has suffered more than 700,000 casualties since Putin started the war in February 2022 and started to engage in “meat grinder” tactics.

The Russian president is now leaning on troops from North Korea to bolster his army ranks, although Moscow has not officially confirmed this.

Ukraine claims that at least 30 North Korean soldiers have recently been wounded or killed in the Russian region of Kursk, which Ukrainian troops is currently occupying.

It comes after Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defence Forces, was killed in a bomb attack in Moscow.

Reports say Ukraine has taken responsibility for the death, calling him a war criminal and a “legitimate target”.

But, in a statement on Telegram, the representative for the Russian foreign ministry, Maria Zakharova, praised Kirillov.

She said he had worked “systematically exposing the crimes of Anglo-Saxons for many years”.

She said: “He worked fearlessly. He did not hide behind people’s backs.

“He met problems head on. For the Motherland, for the truth. Bright be his memory, may he rest in peace.”

Ukraine’s all robot drone team defends 5-mile stretch against 8,000 Russian soldiers

In what might be a world-first, a Ukrainian national brigade has just launched an all-robot, combined-arms drone attack on Russian forces. The assaulting force, a mixture of ground- and aerial unmanned vehicles, was used in the Kharkiv Oblast in northern Ukraine.

According to reports, the attacking force consisted of many units that worked together like a traditional combined-arms force. “We are talking about dozens of units of robotic and unmanned equipment simultaneously on a small section of the front,” a 13th National Guard Brigade spokesperson explained.

"These large multi-rotor copters can carry a large charge, such as an anti-tank mine. And FPV-drones. Here, you can check the surveillance drone box. In this way, robots are used. Equipment simultaneously on a small section of the front," added a representative (source in Ukrainian) of the public relations service of the Charter brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.

While an impressive development technologically, some have suggested this might be a worrying sign for Ukrainian forces. They suggest that Ukrainian human resources could be overstretched, necessitating said robots.

Send the droids

While drones have some interesting capabilities, they are nowhere near as useful as human infantry for most tasks, especially when holding ground. It could also indicate that Ukrainian forces are becoming less eager to commit human beings in ground assaults due to heavy losses.

According to some sources, the war has claimed somewhere in the region of 1,000,000 dead, wounded, or missing on both sides. Those kinds of losses are difficult to absorb, especially for Ukraine's smaller population than Russia.

The brigade in question is tasked with defending a five-mile (8 km) stretch of frontline around Holyoke. This town is located on the Ukrainian-Russian border and is under pressure from four Russian regiments.

This means that there could be as many as 8,000 Russian soldiers facing off against clearly outnumbered Ukrainian defenders. For reference, a Russian regiment typically consists of a maximum of 2,000 personnel apiece.

According to Forbes, the 34th Brigade is in this area, with no more than a quarter of that. A similar ratio of Ukrainian-Russian forces is also seen across a larger 800-mile (1,287 km) front line.

This is despite Russian forces reportedly suffering heavier losses than Ukraine, being roughly twice since the outbreak of war in February of 2022.

Regarding the actual combined-arms robotic assault, the operation used a mixture of remote-controlled aerial surveillance and minelaying drones, kamikaze ground and aerial drones, and gun-armed ground robots. This operation was also based on a smaller-scale test run on a Russian-entrenched position in September.

Drones not a replacement for humans

Russia, for its part, has also conducted similar operations in the past but was less successful. The latest Ukrainian attack was reportedly a success, but taking ground and holding are two very different kinds of operation. And the latter, arguably more important, is nye-on impossible with drones.

Human soldiers can sit, watch, and wait in position and can react rapidly to counterattacks. On the other hand, drones require constant vigilance from human operators who are entirely dependent on the drone's sensors for situational awareness.

Drones also require a power source and tend to be maintenance-hungry. They are also considerably less reliable than humans and tend to break down constantly.

They are also highly susceptible to datalink dropouts and enemy electronic warfare attacks like jamming. At this point, it appears that the attack was a success, but it is not entirely clear if the 13th National Guard Brigade followed up the assault with human troops to hold positions taken.

Key Figure in Gaetz Ethics Report Blasts ‘Haphazard,’ ‘Sloppy’ Committee, Demands Retractions

A Florida businessman who is a key figure in the sex and drug allegations against former Congressman Matt Gaetz has called the House Ethics Committee’s biased investigation report “reckless,” demanding the retraction of multiple “demonstrably false statements,” The National Pulse can reveal.Lawyers representing Christopher Dorworth note that former Congressman Gaetz is not even under the Committee’s jurisdiction before explaining in a letter sent just hours after the committee’s report was leaked to the corporate media that it contains at least three falsehoods.

The first involves an allegation that Gaetz invited people to Dorworth’s home on July 15, 2017. Dorworth states that Gaetz did not invite anyone to his home and that the Committee’s evidence that he did is “a gate log that doesn’t include Gaetz’s name on it” and references to “an affidavit and deposition transcripts that say nothing about Gaetz inviting anyone to [Dorworth’s] home.”Another claim is that Dorworth was confronted with cell phone records during his deposition, but Dorthworth denies this occurred. The records, lawyers claim, were deemed “Attorneys eyes only” and were not reviewed by Dorworth or experts. Finally, Dorworth’s lawyers note that the Committee claims it “requested, through counsel, that Mr. Dorworth clarify his testimony regarding his whereabouts on the evening of July 15, 2017; his counsel did not respond.” They say they did, in fact, send an email to Committee staff that included exculpatory documents supporting both Dorworth and Gaetz’s public statements regarding the accusations. The letter concludes by noting disappointment, but not surprise, at “the haphazard and careless manner in which [the Committee’s] was drafted and now published,” branding it “sloppy.”The report on the Committee investigation into Gaetz was leaked to the media over the weekend, with several outlets publishing claims that Gaetz paid for sex from women and purchased illegal drugs. Gaetz denies the allegations and notes that the Biden-Harris Justice Department (DOJ) declined to charge him with anything. On Monday, December 23, Gaetz filed a lawsuit against the Committee to prevent the publication of the report, arguing that the Committee not only does not have jurisdiction over him but that he would suffer reputational and professional damage from the report.

Oversight Committee

@GOPoversight

🚨MARTIN O’MALLEY MUST TESTIFY ABOUT FEDERAL AGENCY TELEWORK🚨

On November 18, 2024, the NYT announced Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, was running for DNC chair. Nine days later, just as O’Malley was about to leave the SSA, he signed an agreement with the American Federation of Government Employees that purports to guarantee minimum telework levels for 42,000 SSA employees through 2029 (All of President Trump’s 2nd term).

On O’Malley’s watch, SSA employees have been notably absent from the office. Nearly all of the 58,875 SSA employees are deemed telework eligible, and according to the Biden Administration’s own data, they have been spending less than half their time in the office.

This failure to show up runs parallel to failures at SSA to accomplish its mission. SSA is failing to adequately serve the American people, as SSA disability determination processing times on average “have increased since fiscal year 2020.” They have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.

Today, Chairman James Comer (@RepJamesComer) let O’Malley know that he will be testifying at the start of the next Congress.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський

@ZelenskyyUa

I held a meeting of the Staff.

We thoroughly analyzed our work with Syria after the fall of Assad and his escape.

Today, the intelligence services presented their reports—the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine—as well as the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs. We are defining our strategy and concrete steps.

Ukraine is interested in stabilizing the situation in Syria and the entire region and will support the necessary efforts of partners.

We believe it is crucial for the security of the Syrian people and the region as a whole to remove any Russian presence from Syria.

We are grateful to every state and every leader who is ready to help Syrian society restore normal life and build effective state institutions. We will certainly support Syria in ensuring food security—necessary decisions on our part have already been made, and Ukraine is ready to supply food.

We are ready to work with the representatives of the Syrian people to correct the mistakes of the Assad regime, especially regarding Ukraine and all of Europe.

Today, we also received a report from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi on the frontline and the areas of the Kursk operation. There are risks of North Korea sending additional troops and military equipment to the Russian army, and we will have tangible responses to this. Now, according to preliminary data, the number of North Korean soldiers killed and wounded in the Kursk region has already exceeded 3,000.

It is important for the world to understand that the risk of destabilization around the Korean Peninsula and in neighboring regions or waters increases proportionally with the growing cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. The transfer of modern warfare experience and the proliferation of military technologies from Russia is a global threat. For the world, the cost of restoring stability is always much higher than the cost of effectively pressuring those who destabilize the situation and destroy lives.

Meghan McCain backs Trump on push to retake Panama Canal: 'Very personal'

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Meghan McCain, the daughter of former Sen. John McCain, R- Ariz., on Sunday backed President-elect Donald Trump’s call for the United States to retake full control of the Panama Canal.

Trump wrote via Truth Social Saturday the Central American waterway is crucial for U.S. commerce, adding it is in America's interest to regain control of it. He urged Panamanian officials to cooperate upon his return to the Oval Office.

“When President Jimmy Carter foolishly gave it away, for One Dollar, during his term in Office, it was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else,” Trump wrote of the canal. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop.”

McCain, a self-described “political nepo baby,” took to X to back the president-elect’s plan.

“Trump is right about the Panama Canal,” she wrote. “This is very personal - my dad was born in the Panama Canal Zone.”

McCain, her late father and Trump have long had a tumultuous relationship. Trump's comments about former Sen. McCain, including claiming he was "not a war hero," previously stirred bipartisan outrage.

Panama's conservative president, José Raúl Mulino. rejected Trump’s claim to the canal, saying it threatens his country’s sovereignty. He released a video following Trump’s assertion saying “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong” to Panama.

“Panamanians may have different views on many issues” Mulino said. “But when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag.”

Trump fired back via Truth Social, saying “we’ll see about that!” He also shared an image of the American flag over the canal, which he captioned “welcome to the United States Canal!”

The United States built the Panama Canal in the early 1900s as a more efficient shipping route for freighters traveling between the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Former President Jimmy Carter signed a 1977 treaty which relinquished control of the waterway to Panama.

Trump’s promise comes as he continues to outline plans for his second term. He delivered a wide-ranging political address Sunday, during which he vowed to end “transgender insanity” in United States schools.

“We will get critical race theory and transgender insanity the hell out of our schools and we’re going to get it out of our schools very fast,” Trump said, earning cheers from the audience. “I will defend religious liberty, I will restore free speech and I will defend the right to keep and bear arms.

Matt Gaetz

@mattgaetz

The Biden/Garland DOJ spent years reviewing allegations that I committed various crimes.

I was charged with nothing: FULLY EXONERATED. Not even a campaign finance violation. And the people investigating me hated me.

Then, the very “witnesses” DOJ deemed not-credible were assembled by House Ethics to repeat their claims absent any cross-examination or challenge from me or my attorneys. I’ve had no chance to ever confront any accusers. I’ve never been charged. I’ve never been sued.

Instead, House Ethics will reportedly post a report online that I have no opportunity to debate or rebut as a former member of the body.

In my single days, I often sent funds to women I dated - even some I never dated but who asked. I dated several of these women for years. I NEVER had sexual contact with someone under 18. Any claim that I have would be destroyed in court - which is why no such claim was ever made in court.

My 30’s were an era of working very hard - and playing hard too.

It’s embarrassing, though not criminal, that I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have earlier in life. I live a different life now.

But at least I didn’t vote for CR’s that fuck over the country!

Aussie businessman Anthony Pratt donates $15.1 million to support President-elect Trump

Australian businessman Anthony Pratt has given over $15 million in support of President-elect Donald Trump, placing himself among the incoming commander-in-chief’s top five donors.

The sizable donation from the executive chairman of 100% recycled paper and packaging company Pratt Industries puts him in elite company with big-dollar contributors like Elon Musk, Timothy Mellon, Miriam Adelson and Linda McMahon.

“As I’ve said many times before, President Trump was a great president and will once again be a great president,” Pratt said.

“I’ve been proud to support him not only by making this donation, but also by investing billions in well-paying American manufacturing jobs during his first presidency. I will do so again in his upcoming presidency,” he pledged.

Most of Pratt’s donation — $14 million — will go to the Make America Great Again, Inc. super PAC, with the remaining $1.1 million going toward Trump’s inaugural fund.

Pratt, 64, has built 70 factories in the US, creating some 12,000 manufacturing jobs, making him the largest Australian employer of Americans.

Pratt had been a frequent visitor to the US since the 1980s, but applied for permanent US residency late last year, which he was recently granted.

“We decided it was time to live in America because my family are all U.S. citizens and I wanted to devote more time growing my US business,” he said.

Blake Lively accuses 'It Ends With Us' co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and retaliation

Blake Lively accused her co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment on the set of “It Ends With Us,” and then trying to ruin her reputation after she expressed her concerns, according to a complaint she filed.

The undated complaint, filed with the California Civil Rights Department, says that things got so bad on set that an “all hands” meeting was called on Jan. 4 to address issues “that had nearly derailed production of the film.” Lively, Baldoni, executives for Sony Pictures Entertainment and Wayfarer Studios, as well as Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, attended the meeting.

According to the complaint, obtained by NBC News on Saturday, numerous issues were raised during the meeting, ranging from inappropriate conversations to alleged “retaliatory or abusive behavior.”

The complaint, a precursor to a lawsuit, was first reported by TMZ.

Bryan Freedman, who is representing Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and all its representatives, called the allegations “categorically false.”

“These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media,” he said in a statement.

Freedman said Lively's complaint was “another desperate attempt to ‘fix’ her negative reputation which was garnered from her own remarks and actions during the campaign for the film; interviews and press activities that were observed publicly, in real time and unedited, which allowed for the internet to generate their own views and opinions.”

Lively’s complaint accuses Baldoni, who is also the film’s director, of showing “nude videos or images of women” to her and improvising physical intimacy that had not been previously rehearsed or discussed. During one alleged incident, Baldoni improvised numerous kisses during a scene, the complaint says.

“Mr. Baldoni insisted on shooting the full scene over and over again, well beyond what would have been required on an ordinary set, and without advance notice or consent,” it states.

Another incident alleges that Baldoni did not act in character while they filmed a slow dance scene that did not require sound.

“At one point, he leaned forward and slowly dragged his lips from her ear and down her neck as he said, ‘it smells so good.’ None of this was remotely in character, or based on any dialogue in the script, and nothing needed to be said because, again, there was no sound,” the complaint says, adding: “Mr. Baldoni was caressing Ms. Lively with his mouth in a way that had nothing to do with their roles. When Ms. Lively later objected to this behavior, Mr. Baldoni’s response was, ‘I’m not even attracted to you.’”

The complaint further alleges that Baldoni and Jamey Heath, the chief executive officer of Wayfarer, pressured her “to simulate full nudity” during a scene in which she was giving birth. The complaint says that nudity was not mentioned in the script and was not discussed previously with Lively.

When it was filmed, Baldoni and Heath failed to close the set, “allowing non-essential crew to pass through while Ms. Lively was mostly nude,” it says. The complaint also accuses Baldoni of having his “best friend” play the role of Lively’s doctor, when typically the part would go to a local actor.

The complaint describes several other incidents including Baldoni allegedly telling Lively he could speak to her dead father, trying to enter her trailer while she was nude, and implying to Lively’s fitness trainer that he wanted her to lose weight. Lively filmed the movie shortly after giving birth to her fourth child, the complaint says.

Baldoni and Heath are also accused of discussing their personal sexual experiences and alleged “pornography addiction.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment could not immediately be reached for comment on Saturday. Sony, the film’s distributor, is not named as a defendant.

According to the complaint, Baldoni hired a crisis communications team to launch a “retaliatory social manipulation campaign” against Lively during the film’s promotion to destroy her reputation.

The film made headlines over the summer after fans, suspecting behind-the-scenes drama, began picking apart red carpet interactions and interviews with the cast. Many fans zeroed in on the fact that Baldoni was doing press separately from his co-stars and that some of the film’s stars, including Lively and Jenny Slate, did not follow him on Instagram.

The movie, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, follows Lively’s character, Lily Bloom, and her abusive relationship with a neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, played by Baldoni.

Slate plays Allysa Kincaid, Ryle’s sister.

Hoover shared a New York Times article about the complaint in her Instagram story on Saturday. Addressing Lively directly, she wrote "you have been nothing but honest, kind, supportive and patient since the day we met. Thank you for being exactly the human that you are. Never change. Never wilt."

Lively’s complaint alleges that a marketing plan for the film stated the cast would focus on a “story of hope” instead of domestic violence, but Baldoni “abruptly pivoted away from the film’s marketing plan” in an effort to explain why cast and crew had unfollowed him on social media and to destroy Lively’s reputation because she spoke up on set about his alleged misconduct.

Freedman, Baldoni’s attorney, said Wayfarer hired a crisis communications team because Lively allegedly threatened not to show up to set during filming and threatened not to promote the film.

“The representatives of Wayfarer Studios still did nothing proactive nor retaliated, and only responded to incoming media inquiries to ensure balanced and factual reporting and monitored social activity,” he said.

Lively said she hopes her “legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted.”

Senate passed bill to avoid a government shutdown, ending funding fight at the 11th hour

WASHINGTON — The Senate gave final passage to a bill early Saturday morning to keep the government open for three more months, sending it to President Joe Biden's desk to end the threat of a government shutdown during the holidays.

The vote was 85-11.

The Republican-controlled House passed the bill hours earlier. Although the final vote technically went past the midnight deadline to avert a shutdown, the White House said that Biden would sign the bill Saturday and avoid forcing U.S. troops, Border Patrol agents, air traffic controllers and millions of other federal workers to work without pay.

"Agencies will not shut down and may continue normal operations," Emilie Simons, White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary, posted on X.

The House vote was 366-34, with all opposition coming from Republicans and one member voting present. It capped a tumultuous week that foreshadowed how the new Congress in January might deal with a mercurial Donald Trump back in the White House.

The package funds the government at current levels through March 14, and includes $100 billion in disaster aid and a one-year farm bill — while stripping out a debt limit extension demanded by President-elect Trump earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, Trump had threatened to primary “Any Republican” who voted for a funding bill without a debt limit extension; on Friday, 170 House Republicans did just that.

“We are really grateful that tonight, in bipartisan fashion, with overwhelming majority of votes, we passed the American Relief Act of 2025. This is a very important piece of legislation,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters after the vote. “It funds the government, of course, until March of 2025. That was a big priority for us.”

He vowed that “things are going to be very different around here” next year when Trump returns and Republicans capture the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called it “good news” late Friday that the Senate had reached unanimous agreement to skip the usual hurdles and speedily pass the funding bill.

Just three days ago, House and Senate leaders from both parties struck an agreement to keep the government’s lights on, but Trump and his billionaire confidant Elon Musk killed the deal, insisting at the eleventh hour it needed to extend or abolish the debt limit to make way for Trump’s agenda next year.

A backup plan — slimmed down from the original deal and endorsed by Trump and Musk — then went down in flames on the House floor, tanked by Democrats as well as 38 Republicans who objected to the debt extension.

That left Johnson, who is fighting to keep his speakership, with few good options. After privately huddling with rank-and-file Republicans for more than two hours Friday, Johnson told his party he was pressing forward with Plan C: the same package brought to the floor a day earlier but without Trump’s debt increase.

Exiting the private GOP meeting, Johnson told reporters there would not be a shutdown and that House Republicans are “unified.”

“We will not have a government shutdown, and we will meet our obligations for our farmers who need aid, for the disaster victims all over the country, and for making sure that military and essential services and everyone who relies upon the federal government for a paycheck is paid over the holidays,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he spoke to both Trump and Musk on Friday. “I’ve talked to President Trump, in detail, and he knows exactly what we’re doing,” the speaker said.

Musk appeared to endorse the plan as the House was voting, writing on his social media site X that Johnson “did a good job here, given the circumstances.”

The president-elect had chosen to remain silent on the bill, according to another source familiar with his thinking. Trump’s preference was still to address the debt ceiling, that source said, adding, “Johnson should have listened when the President-elect told him this a month ago. And in every conversation since.”

But Trump may be willing to take a “win” on a funding deal that cuts a significant amount of what he saw as “pork,” the source continued, noting that the process gave Trump’s team insight into where votes are in both parties for dealing with the debt limit next year.

To get around Trump’s last-minute demand of raising the debt ceiling, Republicans have instead agreed to commit to slash more than $2 trillion in government spending and tuck a debt hike likely into a reconciliation package next year, according to multiple lawmakers.

Some Republicans doubt the debt limit pact is worth the paper it's printed on.

“They call that a gentleman’s agreement, I think,” said Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn. “And there are no gentlemen up here, dude.”

85 Sharia courts open across England

Britain has become the Western capital for sharia courts, with 85 operating throughout the country. The news hardly bodes well for those who still believe we have a functional integration strategy.

Not only are British Muslims increasingly turning to the UK’s sharia courts, but they also serve their co-religionists from mainland Europe and North America. Also known as “councils”, they have existed in the UK since the early 1980s and issue Islam-inspired rulings on family life and matrimonial matters.

The Islamic Sharia Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, formed in 1982 and based in Leyton, east London, is a registered charity that provides nikah (marriage) services, as well as overseeing talaq and khula procedures (divorce initiated by the husband and wife respectively).

What is perhaps more revealing is the normalisation of practices that are illegal under UK law – such as polygamous marriages. Polygamy is so normalised that an app for the creation of Islamic wills for those living in England and Wales has a drop-down menu for men to say how many wives they have (between one and four).

The app, reportedly approved by a sharia court, gives daughters half as much inheritance as sons. In addition to this, Muzz (formerly Muzmatch), one of the most popular matrimonial apps for British Muslims, has an option where male users can state their “polygamy plan” – whether they will seek a second wife or intend to stick with one. If a polygamous marriage is performed on British soil, the already-married person may be guilty of bigamy.

If this glimpse into the internal workings of sharia courts tells us anything, it is the fact that existing laws and regulations in the UK are not being properly implemented and enforced – especially when it comes to relatively segregated Muslim communities where orthodox Islamic doctrines prevail.

But if there is a concern over the existence of sharia courts in the UK, then there must be a degree of consistency – especially over the operation of rabbinical courts, such as the London Beth Din, which refers to itself as “one of Europe’s premier halachic authorities” – overseeing marriages, divorces, and conversions, as well as resolving British commercial disputes in a manner consistent with Jewish law.

As a social conservative who values Britain’s rich tradition of religious freedom but also one who appreciates the need for the reassertion of state sovereignty, there is a balance to be struck.

Religious organisations that have charitable status should have it withdrawn if they provide services and facilitate practices that directly contravene UK law – such as polygamous marriages.

Any possibility of migrants in the UK arriving to be a second, third, or fourth wife, should be clamped down on as part of a wider effort to introduce a more restrictive immigration regime.

And alongside the nikah, it should be mandatory for all Muslim couples to marry into legally recognised partnerships, which provide much-needed protections, security, and support.

Religious-minority courts should operate from a strict principle that the law of the land is paramount. If they refuse to do so, then the state has no choice but to intervene.

Britain’s considerable religious freedoms must not be exploited.

Sean Spicer secret weapon?

Trump can fire anybody he wants, thanks to Sean Spicer | Paul Bedard, Washington Examiner

President-elect Donald Trump is arriving at the White House armed with a legal weapon that will let him fire any of President Joe Biden’s appointees.

Thanks in part to a court fight former Trump White House spokesman Sean Spicer lost over his firing by Biden from a three-year term to the Board of Visitors to the United States Naval Academy, the incoming president will have the legal backing to dump any of Biden’s over 4,000 appointments who try to stick around.

And the best part, Spicer told Secrets, “They’ll have no one to blame but Biden himself.”

The case dates to Sept. 8, 2021, when Biden began to fire Trump allies from the visitor boards at the academies of the Navy, the Air Force, and the Army.

Spicer and others, including Russ Vought (just picked by Trump to head the Office of Management and Budget) and former Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway, were unceremoniously dumped despite several of them having time left on their three-year terms.

Spicer and Vought sued, saying that unlike White House staff or others appointed by a prior president, they couldn’t be fired because of their congressionally mandated terms.

They lost, however, when a judge essentially ruled that the president could fire any presidential appointee, whether they had terms or not. A further effort failed, too.

Spicer said that is exactly what he hoped the courts would do because he wanted to help a future Trump presidency fire Biden’s picks without having its hands tied.

“What no one ever understood was this was not about actually getting back on the board, because my term had been expired for months. It was forcing them to argue in the affirmative that they had the ultimate authority to fire anybody at any time, which they did. And the court accepted that. So the Biden administration is now on record in court, and the court agreed that the president had absolute authority to fire anyone he wants,” Spicer said in an interview.
