A perfectly reasonable final status for Greenland would be a Compact of Free Association.

Greenland will likely declare "independence" from Denmark, because faggotry.

But Greenland is not a viable independent nation, and receives half its budget from Denmark.

(There is simply no way such a small population can control such a large area.)

And that is not even counting the defense provided by the US since it is baked into NATO.

So Greenland needs a protector, and the US is the best fit (rather than China or Russia… I won't bother to mention Canada).

This is due both to US power and to cultural affinity (we already have Alaska).

It could be a territory with a non-voting rep in Congress, but then they'd have to embrace English and they might not like that as many already know two minor languages and good for them.

But Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands are all officially independent UN members.

(They were all former US "Trust Territories".)

But they all have a "Compact of Free Association" with the US.

Basically this means the US is in complete control of defense and the US military has free reign.

In return, their citizens are effectively treated as US citizens with free entry (but can't vote) and government benefits if they are in the US.

But they can run their own islands as they wish and are not subject to US law.

Basically they are formalized client states… win/win.
