Israel confirms it assassinated Hamas leader in Iran

Ismail Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device in Tehran in July

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has acknowledged for the first time that West Jerusalem was responsible for the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran this summer.

Haniyeh, who was the Palestinian armed group’s chief negotiator in indirect ceasefire talks with Israel, was killed by an explosive device in the Iranian capital in late July, hours after attending the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Israel had taken responsibility for the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and the head of the Lebanese movement Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, which occurred in recent months, but had not confirmed its involvement in Haniyeh’s death.

Katz’s corroboration came as he issued a warning to Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who continue their strikes against Israel, at a commemoration event for Israeli security officers on Monday.

"These days, when the Houthi terror organization is firing missiles at Israel, I want to convey a clear message to them: We have defeated Hamas, we have defeated Hezbollah, we have blinded the defense systems in Iran, and damaged the [missile] production systems. We have overthrown the Assad regime in Syria, we have dealt heavy blows to the ‘axis of evil,’ and we will also severely strike the Houthi terror organization in Yemen, which remains the last one standing,” the minister said, as cited by the Times of Israel.

The government of former Syrian President Bashar Assad fell earlier this month after a swift advance by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other armed groups. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that this was “a direct result” of the bombing of Syria and Iran by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Katz warned that Israel will “strike strategic infrastructure [of the Houthis] and decapitate its leaders. Just as we did to Haniyeh, Sinwar, and Nasrallah, in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon – we will do in Hodeidah and [Yemen’s capital] Sanaa.”

“Whoever raises a hand against Israel will have their hand cut off, and the long arm of the IDF will strike them and settle the score,” he added.

Soon after Haniyeh’s killing, Iran said it was “orchestrated and executed” by Israel, and promised to retaliate at a time of its choosing. The response came in October when Tehran fired over 180 ballistic missiles at targets in Israel.

Musk confirms $1 billion offer to rename Wikipedia

The billionaire previously proposed paying the website to change its name to “Dickipedia”

Elon Musk has confirmed that his offer to pay $1 billion for Wikipedia to change its name to “Dickipedia” is still on the table. The X owner initially made the proposal amid accusations that the encyclopedia has an embedded left-leaning bias.

On Tuesday, one X user recalled Musk’s offer, to which the billionaire replied “True. Offer still stands.”

Earlier this year, Musk claimed that Wikipedia was “broken” and urged to “fix Wokipedia” amid accusations that the website allows articles that brand Republicans and US President-elect Donald Trump as “fascist” and promote other left-wing narratives while painting the political right in a negative light. He claimed that the encyclopedia is “controlled by far-left activists” and urged people to stop donating to it.

Musk has also questioned why the Wikimedia Foundation has been asking for large amounts of money, arguing that “it certainly isn’t needed to operate Wikipedia” because “you can literally fit a copy of the entire text on your phone.”

The website previously explained in a community note that while a text and English-only copy of Wikipedia was about 51GB, the entire encyclopedia, including all the media and other languages weighs some 428TB. The organization said that in 2022, Wikimedia generated $154 million in revenue and had $145 million in expenses.

In October, while posting a photo of Wikipedia’s donation plea, Musk wrote: “I will give them a billion dollars if they change their name to Dickipedia,” and called it “a stiff & firm offer.”

Meanwhile, a study in June by the Manhattan Institute, a US-based conservative think tank, found that Wikipedia’s tendency to negatively portray right-wing political figures had started to affect AI large language models that harvest data from the online encyclopedia.

The report said that it had found “prevailing associations of negative emotions (e.g., anger and disgust) with right-leaning public figures; and positive emotions (e.g., joy) with left-leaning public figures,” suggesting “evidence of political bias embedded in Wikipedia articles.”

Last month, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also hit out against Wikipedia, claiming that the encyclopedia provided one-sided and often biased interpretations of events in its historical and political articles, which “almost always reflect and exclusively Western-centric point of view and contain direct forgeries.”
