New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, signed legislation this week that requires major fossil fuel companies to contribute fees to support New York's climate change mitigation efforts. Under the new law, companies with significant greenhouse gas emissions will be required to contribute to a state fund dedicated to infrastructure projects aimed at mitigating future climate change damage and repairing existing impacts. The legislation, approved earlier this year, compels major oil and gas companies to help cover the costs of recovery after extreme weather events. The University of Michigan (UM) is hosting a workshop to teach graduate students how to recognize “racism in everyday life.” The event promises to teach about “racism, anti-racism, power, and oppression” and help prepare students to identify and address instances of bias and “microaggressions,” according to the university’s event webpage. UM is currently considering abandoning its entire multi-million dollar diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) program.
