Hapag-Lloyd US Port Strike Surcharges To Go Into Effect Same Day As Trump Inauguration
Ocean container carrier Hapag-Lloyd announced two surcharges ahead of a potential strike by unionized longshore workers at U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports in January.
The Work Disruption Surcharge (WDS) and Work Interruption Destination Surcharge (WID) are effective Jan. 20, 2025, in the event of a strike, the German company said in an announcement on its website.
“This surcharge covers additional costs from labor disruptions, strikes, slowdowns, unrest, congestion, and other unforeseen events that may delay operations and incur extra handling, storage, and feeder service costs,” the announcement stated.
The surcharges take effect on Jan. 20, the same day President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated and just after the current longshore contract extension expires Jan. 15.
.rump earlier this month publicly backed the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) in its contract dispute with port employers represented by the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX).
After bargaining resumed following a three-day strike in October, the union broke off negotiations in November, charging ocean carriers and terminal operators were trying to eliminate union jobs by forcing provisions for automated container-handling into a new contract. Employers fired back, saying semiautomated container cranes were desperately needed to improve efficiency and make U.S. ports globally competitive, which they claim will create more dockworker jobs.
“We want to avoid another strike, and hope that our employers represented by United States Maritime Alliance will respect our demands for a fair and decent contract,” wrote ILA President Harold Daggett in a Christmas message to members posted on the union’s website.
The WDS is $850 per 20-foot container and $1,700 per 40-foot box, covering all equipment types. The surcharge covers imports from all ports in North Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent, Oceania and Latin America to the U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports.
The WID is also $850 per 20-foot, and $1,700 per 40-foot, containers of all types. It applies to imports from all ports in East Asia-Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Macau, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines to the U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports.
Hapag-Lloyd said the surcharges will be waived if no disruptions take place. They do not apply to containers already on the water or in terminals before Jan. 20.

Jewish Committee Protests Pope Francis’s ‘Unbalanced Criticism of Israel’
The International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC) has written an open letter to Pope Francis criticizing his “one-sided perspective” in the Gaza conflict.
In the letter, the IJCIC takes issue with the pontiff’s “troubling and deeply concerning” remarks regarding the conflict in Gaza, which “have been repeated on several occasions.”
Portraying Israel’s war efforts against Hamas simply as “cruelty” is mistaken, and “risks presenting a one-sided perspective that overlooks the broader context and complexities of the current crisis,” the letter states.
The respectfully worded letter, signed by IJCIC chairman Rabbi Mark Dratch, asserts that Israel is engaged in a “defensive war against jihadist terrorism” provoked by “the brutal and unprecedented massacre perpetrated by Hamas on October 7.”
In its attack, Hamas murdered more than 1,400 innocent Israelis and others “in cold blood,” the letter declares, and of the 251 hostages abducted that day, “101 remain held hostage under unspeakable conditions.”
Therefore, to frame Israel’s actions solely in terms of cruelty without acknowledging the necessity aim of dismantling a terrorist infrastructure that has repeatedly targeted civilians “diminishes the suffering experienced by Israeli families and communities,” the letter states, and further fuels the “rampant antisemitism” raging throughout the world.
Along with the damage done to the Jewish community, such ambiguous statements also “risk undermining the moral clarity needed to confront the global threat of terrorism,” the text continues.
Hamas not only imperils Israeli lives, but also “callously uses its own civilian population as human shields, storing weapons in hospitals, schools, and residential areas,” it adds, which makes it “agonizingly difficult” to prevent the deaths of innocents while fighting combatants.
Israel’s actions are motivated “not by cruelty but by the imperative to safeguard its population against existential threats,” the letter insists.
We urge the Holy See “to condemn regularly and forcefully the atrocities committed by Hamas with equal fervor,” it declares, since silence on this matter “risks emboldening those who seek to sow hatred and destruction.”

CDC can't substantiate COVID vaccine ingredient claims, FDA forced to turn over Pfizer data

Federal public health agencies are known for black-and-white public service announcements that portray their favorite COVID-19 treatments as universally beneficial without providing supporting data, particularly the effectiveness of each new vaccine formulation.
Food and Drug Administration Commissioner-nominee Marty Makary once accused the current officeholder, Robert Califf, of wildly exaggerating data in claiming that since-rescinded bivalent vaccines, which targeted two COVID strains, showed a "significant reduction in hospitalization and death in all populations examined, which is clinically meaningful."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which similarly claims COVID vaccines are safer than infections for all populations, has now been caught empty-handed when asked for data to support its claim, on the same "myths and facts" page, that "nearly all the ingredients" in the therapeutics are found "in many foods – fats, sugars, and salts."
The Informed Consent Action Network and Mississippi Medical Professionals for Informed Consent filed a Freedom of Information Act request for all documents including "studies, journal articles, manufacturer data, etc." that are "sufficient to show the foods that contain the same ingredients as those found in the COVID19 vaccines" to verify the CDC's claim.
They also asked for data on foods that contain the ingredients listed in the vaccine inserts, in another five FOIA requests: "recombinant spike protein from the SARS-CoV-2 virus … nucleoside-modified messenger RNA …extracts from the soapbark tree" and exotic-sounding chemicals such as "methyl-α-D-mannopyranoside," and evidence that the body responds the same to an ingredient whether eaten or injected.
The CDC's response to the broadest request? Its National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases does not have "any documents pertaining to your request."
The FOIA officer told the entities to ask the FDA for the data because "the subject matter expert notes that ingredients in specific vaccines fall under the responsibility of the FDA," and also told them how to appeal the agency's response up the FOIA command chain.
"Typically, if one agency points us to another, ICAN will have us submit the same requests to that other agency although here, ICAN was questioning the evidence justifying a statement on CDC’s own website so it’s unclear why CDC would have no records yet FDA would have them," ICAN's lawyer Elizabeth Brehm told Just the News in an email.
She shared the agency's responses to all six FOIAs, which gave the same no-records response but also cited various CDC and FDA pages, including kinds of vaccine ingredients and examples, such as the stabilizer gelatin and "residual inactivating ingredient" formaldehyde, and a long explanation of why certain ingredients are in vaccines.
