Up until the 70's, MIL avoided the vulnerabilities they knew of (extensively.) In the 80's control shifted sharply and it seemed like a field day of designing insecurity into everything at every level, I believe for intelligence/surveillance reasons. (Bad reasons.) This has now gotten so bad that it is backfiring in spectacular fashion and now we all get to rebuild the entire friggin' tech industry all over again from the ground up.
