One Israeli strike targeted an upper floor of al-Wafaa Hospital in Gaza City, killing at least seven Palestinians. “Seven martyrs and several injured people, including critical cases, have been recovered following the Israeli strike on the upper floor of the al-Wafaa Hospital in central Gaza City,” Gaza’s Civil Defense said.

The Israeli military claimed without evidence that it targeted a Hamas “command and control center” and said the building was no longer used as a hospital. Gaza’s Health Ministry disputed the claim, saying it’s partially functioning.

“The al-Wafaa Hospital is partially operational, providing care to patients with physical disabilities,” Munir al-Barsh, the director general of the Health Ministry, told AFP. “The hospital had been rehabilitated and was getting ready to receive patients. Had it not been targeted by Israeli shelling today, it would have been ready to fully reopen in the next few days.”

Syria’s de facto leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, also known as Ahmed al-Sharaa, said in an interview published on Sunday that it may take up to four years to hold elections and three years to draft a new constitution.

“The process of writing the constitution may take about three years, and we look forward to a constitution that lasts for the longest possible period, and this is a difficult and lengthy task,” Julani, the former leader of al-Qaeda in Syria, told Al-Arabiya. “Organizing elections may take four years; any valid elections will require a comprehensive population census.”

Julani and his group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is an offshoot of al-Qaeda, took over Syria after former President Bashar al-Assad fled on December 8. Julani has appointed HTS officials to senior positions in the new “transitional government,” including Anas Hassan Khattab, another former al-Qaeda commander who was named Syria’s intelligence chief.

Foreign Mercenaries Continue to Die in Ukraine – 6.5 Thousand Dead

Since the beginning of the Ukrainian-Russian armed conflict, about 6.5 thousand of the 15 thousand foreign mercenaries who arrived in Ukraine have been killed. This was reported by Yulia Zhdanova, acting head of the Russian delegation at the Vienna talks on military security and arms control.

Among them are mercenaries from 110 countries, the largest contingent of which were servicemen from Poland (2,960), the United States (1,113), Georgia (1,042), Canada (1,005) and the United Kingdom (822).

84% of H-1B Visas Go to India and China: Is It a DEI Scam in Disguise?

My wife isn’t an American citizen: She’s Dutch. (So I guess it’s true, foreigners really are doing the “work” that native-born Americans refuse to do.) She was raised in French Polynesia, earned her master’s in accounting from the University of Hawaii, and when we moved to Charleston, South Carolina, a local accounting firm sponsored her H-1B visa.

It sucked. She couldn’t be paid until the application was approved and it tethered her to one single company. She worked without pay for several months.

I offer this backdrop for an important reason: The MAGAverse is currently being divided by the H-1B visa debate. On one side, there’s Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, along with most of the Big Tech movers and shakers. (Which makes sense: Companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon are America’s top H-1B visa sponsors.)

On the other side, you have Steve Bannon and most of the grassroots MAGA movement, who question how and/or why increasing the number of foreign workers in lucrative, high-paying STEM jobs aligns with “Making America Great Again.”

To be fair, this doesn’t have to be a conflict. One of the key institutional advantages of the United States is that the top international talent would sell their wisdom teeth to live here. We’re the ultimate go-to destination for the smartest, most ambitious workers in the world: The annual number of H-1B visas is capped at 85,000.

In 2020 (the most recent year with recorded stats), 421,276 applied.

An overwhelming majority of Americans would be delighted to welcome a small number of high-achievers into our country. Immigrants like Elon Musk are unquestionably a net positive. So, in this (narrow) sense, H-1B visas actually are aligned with Making America Great Again.

Unfortunately, Musk and Ramaswamy have unnecessarily conflated the H-1B visa debate with a meanspirited critique of American culture, American children, and American parents. As Ramaswamy tweeted:

Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.

A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math Olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.

Ramaswamy has a point; he’s a very smart man. But for PR purposes, his tweet was stupid. He should’ve accentuated the (patriotic) benefits of the program, instead of detouring into an admonishment of American families.

It was a foolish misstep.

Most Americans are proud of their kids. As a parent, I’d rather have a great kid than a great engineer. It’s my job to raise a child with the wisdom, values, and discipline to achieve his dreams — wherever it takes him.

Even if his dreams are different from Ramaswamy’s.

Other than the gigantic tech companies, the other beneficiaries of the H-1B visa program are India and China. Seventy-two percent of H-1B visa recipients were from India; 12% from China.

That’s 84% of the total number.

A lobby group for Indian H-1B contract workers is trying to use the GOP’s planned 2025 reconciliation bill to get fast-track green cards for roughly 1.2 million Indian citizens living in the United States.

The lobbying effort is built on the hope that President Donald Trump’s West Coast business allies will defeat the rising skepticism of many voters and GOP legislators, many zig-zagging Democratic legislators, and President Donald Trump’s American-first mandate.

“There’s a blank slate at the moment,” immigration attorney Leon Fresco told many of the Indian migrants during a phone conference hosted by the Immigration Voice lobby group on Sunday night.

“We don’t know this could literally be the best of times, or this could literally be the worst of times,” said Fresco, who worked as an advisor for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as the “Gang of Eight” amnesty was being drafted in 2013.

“We believe that the time is now as the upcoming new administration takes over,” said Aman Kapoor, the president of Immigration Voice. “There is new energy, there is now a desire to make changes, and we want to be part of that change.”

The Indians are allowed to take desirable careers from Americans because many U.S. employers use the H-1B, L-1, J-1, TN, OPT, CPT, and H4EAD programs to hire low-wage foreign graduates, mostly for entry-level jobs. Indians get roughly 70 percent of these visas.

These programs are uncapped, do not require the jobs be offered to Americans, and do not require a skills test. Only the uncapped O-1 “genius visa” requires proof of prior accomplishment.
