The Jesuits have a long history in Louisiana, beginning in the early 18th century. In 1700, Fr. Paul Du Ru, SJ, served as the chaplain for an expedition exploring the Mississippi River from the south to the north. Other Jesuits followed, serving as chaplains in Biloxi, Mississippi, Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, and ministering to Native American nations in the area.

In 1725, Fr. Nicholas Ignace de Beaubois, SJ, established the first permanent Jesuit residence in New Orleans. This was the headquarters for missionary activity until 1763, when the Society was suppressed in Louisiana. The Jesuits returned to the area in 1837, this time sent by the province of Lyon in France. They ministered across the region from South Carolina to New Mexico, first as a mission of that province before becoming its own province in 1907.

In 1831, four French Jesuits arrived in New Orleans on their way to Bardstown, Ky. At the request of Bishop Anthony Blanc, the Jesuit General was asked to send Jesuits to help establish a Jesuit college in Louisiana. This led to the founding of St. Charles College in Grand Coteau in 1838, which became the first Jesuit college in the Southern United States.

Jesuit High School in New Orleans was founded in 1847 as the College of the Immaculate Conception and later became Jesuit High School in 1911. It is a private, non-profit, Catholic college-preparatory school for boys in grades 8-12 that serves students of all religious faiths.

Today, the Jesuits continue their work in Louisiana through institutions like the Jesuit Spirituality Center in Grand Coteau.

Catholics make up a significant portion of Louisiana’s population, particularly in the southern part of the state. This is due to the historical influence of French and Spanish colonization and the cultural heritage of Creoles, as well as later immigration from Italy, Ireland, and other regions.

In 2001, Catholics numbered about 1.3 million, making up slightly more than 31 percent of the total state population.
