Supercharged auroras possible this weekend as colossal 'hole' in the sun spews solar wind toward Earth
January 3, 2024
A massive coronal hole has formed in the sun's atmosphere, unleashing a powerful stream of solar wind toward Earth. Nearby, a second, slightly smaller coronal hole is also directing solar wind our way.
There is a great chance of strong northern lights, especially at high latitudes this weekend.
Recent solar activity has prompted the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a minor G1 geomagnetic storm warning for Jan. 4 and Jan. 5.
While geomagnetic storm watches of this level are not uncommon, it's not something to ignore.
A recent uptick in geomagnetic activity produced stunning northern lights displays that reached deep into mid-latitudes over New Year's.
Aurora chasers at high latitudes may be in for another spectacular treat. Make sure those camera batteries are charged!
For an up-to-date breakdown of geomagnetic activity over the next 3 days, check out NOAA's SWPC 3-day forecast.
NOAA classifies geomagnetic storms using a G-scale, which ranks their intensity from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). The recent geomagnetic storm watch NOAA issued is rated as a G1.
Coronal holes appear as dark areas in the sun's corona — the outer atmosphere — when viewed in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray imagery, according to NOAA.
These 'holes' appear dark because they are cooler than the surrounding material. Coronal holes allow solar wind to escape from the sun more readily, resulting in streams of relatively fast solar wind.
When directed at Earth, these solar wind streams can interact with our planet's magnetic field and trigger geomagnetic storm conditions.
Though G1 conditions are predicted for the weekend, remember that space weather, much like Earth's weather, is unpredictable and difficult to forecast.
Even though geomagnetic storm warnings at this level are not uncommon, they can occasionally amount to nothing.
To stay updated on space weather and know the best times and places to catch auroras, consider using a space weather app tailored to your location.
One app I recommend is "My Aurora Forecast & Alerts," available on both iOS and Android.
Another great tool is the "Space Weather Live" app on iOS and Android which offers more in-depth insights into current space weather conditions and their potential for aurora activity.

Iranian suspect detained in Italy in US drone case praying for Italian reporter detained in Tehran
Jan. 3, 2025
The fate of an Italian journalist detained in Tehran and an Iranian engineer imprisoned in Italy on a U.S. warrant grew even more intertwined Friday as the Iranian awaits possible extradition to the United States to face charges he provided drone technology to Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard corps.
A Milan court scheduled a hearing for Jan. 15 to decide whether to keep Mohammad Abedini at Milan’s Opera prison or grant him house arrest pending the start of the lengthy extradition process.
The U.S. government hasn’t commented publicly on Abedini’s petition, but in the past it has complained to Italy’s justice ministry about a half-dozen cases of suspects wanted by the U.S. who escaped from the Italian justice system before they could be extradited.
On Friday, lawyer Alfredo De Francesco visited Abedini in prison and said his client had asked him about Cecilia Sala, an Italian reporter detained in Tehran just days after Abedini was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa airport on a U.S. warrant.
Italian commentators have speculated that Iran is holding Sala as a bargaining chip to ensure Abedini’s release, and both governments have linked their fates to one another in public statements.
“He asked me to write the name of Cecilia Sala on a piece of paper we had with pen, so that he could correctly pronounce her name,” De Francesco told reporters outside the prison.
“And he told me that he would pray a lot for her and himself in these days.”
He said Abedini had heard about Sala’s case inside the prison and didn’t understand any connection to him. The lawyer stressed that on the surface the two cases are separate.
“He asked me if she had been arrested and how she had been arrested, and why in some way they wanted to connect her to him,” the lawyer said.
“I explained the situation to him, even what is said on television, because it is useless to deny it, but I explained to him.”
“He was very moved by this thing, to know that she is a woman in prison right now, and so he prays for her, for him,” he said.
Sala, a reporter for the Il Foglio daily, was detained in Iran on Dec. 19. She had arrived in the country on Dec. 13 on a journalist visa and was arrested on charges of violating the laws of the Islamic Republic, the state-run IRNA news agency said.
On Dec. 16, the U.S. Justice Department announced charges against Abedini and another Iranian citizen accused of supplying the drone technology to Iran that was used in a January 2024 attack on a U.S. outpost in Jordan that killed three American troops.
Abedini was detained that day at Milan’s Malpensa airport on a U.S. warrant seeking his extradition.
U.S. federal prosecutors charged Abedini and his co-defendant with export control violations after FBI specialists analyzed the drone navigation system used in the Jordan attack and traced it to them.
U.S. prosecutors said Abedini’s Tehran-based company manufactures navigation systems for the military drone program of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
Iran’s embassy to Italy has connected Sala’s fate to that of Abedini, saying in a statement posted to X that it will respect Sala’s rights and expects Italy to do the same for Abedini.
“It is reciprocally expected from the Italian government that, in addition to expediting the release of the detained Iranian citizen, he will be provided with the things he needs,” said the statement, which was issued after Ambassador Mohammadreza Sabouri was summoned to the Italian Foreign Ministry for consultations Thursday.
Iran added that it considered Abedini was being held on “false charges.”
The delicate diplomatic triangle poses something of a headache for the government of Premier Giorgia Meloni, which is still stinging from the embarrassment of having lost track of another high-profile target wanted by the U.S.
Russian businessman Artyom Uss, wanted by the U.S. on alleged sanctions violations, escaped from Italy in 2022 after he was granted house arrest, despite warnings from the U.S. that he was a flight risk.
Uss, the son of a Russian regional governor, later resurfaced in Russia. Meloni acknowledged at the time that there were grave “anomalies” in the handling of his case and ordered an investigation.
Milan’s general prosecutor, Francesca Nanni, has opposed Abedini’s motion for house arrest, saying he’s a flight risk and that not even guarantees from Iran’s consulate in Milan were sufficient to ensure he wouldn’t disappear.
The issue could come up next week when Meloni hosts President Joe Biden on his final foreign trip before leaving office.

China condemns U.S. plans to restrict drone imports over security concerns
9:20PM Fri January 3, 2025
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has voiced strong opposition to the U.S. Commerce Department’s recent announcement regarding potential new regulations that could restrict or ban Chinese drones in the United States, citing national security issues.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) issued a statement seeking public feedback on a proposed rule aimed at “safeguarding the information and communication technology and services supply chain for unmanned aircraft systems,” or drones.
The announcement raised concerns that commercial drones could be remotely accessed and manipulated by entities in China and Russia, thus “exposing sensitive US data.”
During a routine press conference on Friday, spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China firmly opposes the U.S.’s broad interpretation of national security, which she argued disrupts normal international trade and economic exchanges.
She further asserted that such actions undermine the stability of global industrial and supply chains.
Mao reaffirmed that China would take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests in response to these developments.

Amritsar: China-made drone found in Amritsar
Friday, January 3, 2025 6:40 PM
Troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) recovered a Pakistani drone from a farming field adjacent to the Village Dhanoe Khurd in Amritsar district, officials said on Friday.
According to the Public Relations Officer, Punjab Frontier, BSF, the troops deployed on duty on the Amritsar border observed the movement of a drone during the late evening hours on Thursday.
Immediately, a counter-drone drill was carried out and a thorough search of the area was conducted.
DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone
Subsequently, the troops recovered 1 China-made DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone at about 8:25 pm on Thursday from a farming field adjacent to the Village Dhanoe Khurd in Amritsar district.
Robust technical counter-measures deployed on the order and diligent efforts of BSF troops thwarted yet another intrusion of illicit drones from across the border, said the PRO.
Earlier, in its ongoing efforts to combat illegal drone intrusions from Pakistan, the Border Security Force troops achieved significant success in two separate operations.
The official handle of BSF Punjab posted on X, "In the first operation, BSF troops recovered one packet of heroin weighing 512 grams from Village Bhagatana, District Gurdaspur.
This consignment was dropped by a Pakistani drone."
"In the second operation, BSF troops intercepted and neutralized a Pakistani drone attempting to cross the border. The recovered drone was identified as a China-made DJI Mavic 3 Classic," it said.
The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed at the frontier shared a heartfelt message with the nation, assuring citizens of their safety while extending warm New Year greetings.
Describing the BSF and the country as their family, the personnel expressed pride in safeguarding the borders and serving the nation.
According to BSF, several terrorists operating along the range of Pakistan are believed to be active in Jammu and Kashmir, making the need for steadfast vigilance even more critical. (With Agency Inputs)

Long Island authorities remind people to follow drone rules
Updated: Jan 3, 2025 / 11:40 AM CST
Officials in Suffolk County, New York, are holding a press briefing to remind people to follow the rules and avoid restricted airspace when flying drones.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr., noted that many people may have gotten drones as a gift over the holidays and reminded residents that drones of a certain size must be registered and drone operators should familiarize themselves with the rules governing drones.
Toulon focused on the issue of drones approaching restricted airspace near airports, posing a risk to air traffic and public safety.
Officials also noted drones have been used to drop contraband at prisons, raising additional concerns.
Authorities said they are also working with the FBI to investigate drones in the area and arrest and charge those who are using large drones illegally.
They also reminded people not to shoot drones, pointing out that falling drones can crash into property and become a safety issue.
The reminder comes after a series of mysterious drone sightings in the northeast.
Primarily seen in New Jersey, there have been multiple reports of drones in the night skies, some described as being as large as a school bus.
People have questioned where the drones are coming from, noting that some have been seen near sensitive locations, including President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course and an Army munitions depot.
Federal officials have downplayed concerns about the drones and have told people not to try shooting them down.

Drones 'the size of buses' are still invading New Jersey… as experts reveal why crisis has gone silent
Updated: 04:38 EST, 3 January 2025
While official reports of eerie drone-like UFOs dropped over the holidays, New Jersey residents are still coming forward with bizarre encounters.
Two witnesses in Manalapan Township, for example, videotaped a bus-sized, 25- to 50-foot-long black triangle UFO that they saw 'pull off a high g [force] maneuver over a residential area' just days before Christmas.
The sighting, which lasted at least one minute, ended with the object zooming 'in the general direction of McGuire [Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst]' — matching a persistent pattern of 'drone' UFO incursions over US bases in recent years.
Another New Jersey skywatcher recorded what they described as a classic 'flying saucer' with an 'aura or haze around object' just three miles off the coast of Atlantic City.
And still more Garden State witnesses now say they saw as many as 20 to 30 drones just this Wednesday night, which 'kind of hovered and all looked like miniature aircraft,' in an account posted to Facebook. 'Very disconcerting for sure,' one witness said.
Some experts attribute the drop in official reports to law enforcement to expanded drone flight bans by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) across the tristate area.
But others, including former chief of the FBI's counter-drone unit Rob D'Amico, believe most of the sightings were errors and 'hysteria' to begin with, suggesting that the decline might be nothing more than a case of the 'mystery drone' fever breaking.
'I truly think that 90 percent of these sightings are manned aircraft,' D'Amico said. 'People have never looked up in the sky before to notice how crowded it is.'
'When you look at them and the landing lights and the navigation lights and how they fly,' D'Amico argued in an interview with NJ Spotlight, 'they are manned aircraft.'
But local eyewitnesses are unconvinced by the past and present federal investigators dismissive assertions, with many acknowledging that the strange craft do resemble traditional aircraft.
Rich V. reported seeing a large drone buzzing over his in-laws' house in Somerset this Christmas.
He shared the details with DailyMail.com, saying it was flying lower than the average airplane and was the size of a private jet.
'It went over homes so there was a reference point to see how low it was,' Rich said.
'2 additional large drones flew over shortly after I left which I did not see first hand, but was told to expect it by my in-law in law enforcement,' he told DailyMail.com of the event, which occurred during a Christmas visit just last week.
Somerset sits about 30 miles south of Newark airport where tons of planes fly in and out from all parts of the world.
But, as Rich took pains to emphasize, 'we checked the Flight Radar and there was no plane in the sky where we were at, which was Bound Brook NJ.'
His account of odd behavior by somewhat conventional-looking objects echoes the account from this past Wednesday night by a driver, Richie Sougstad, who spotted roughly 20-30 drones on his commute home through northern New Jersey.
Sougstad described the drones as being stationary except for two.
'One was moving slowly about 20 mph, another one just kinda shot up into the atmosphere and disappeared from sight,' he shared online.
But the remaining two dozen or so, he explained, 'looked like mini airplanes but they were definitely bigger than my pick up truck.'
'Crazy part to me was just how they hovered like a helicopter but just silently,' he said.

Tales of more exotic-looking drones or UFOs spotted in recent weeks over New Jersey, as reported to the nonprofit National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), have also curiously kept to these same 'bus-sized' dimensions.
The two Manalapan witnesses who saw a 25-50 foot 'black triangle' UFO from little more than 400 yards above them described the craft as 'silent' despite flying so 'quickly' that they initially thought it was a jet.
'Took a screenshot from the vid and you can just make out a dark triangle angled around each of its 3 lights,' one of the two anonymous NUFORC witnesses reported.
The witness said that a friend claimed the sightings might have been a TR-3B: the legendary and still unconfirmed 'Black Manta' anti-gravity spy plane, alleged to have been made by US defense contractor Northrop in the early 1990s.
The black triangle, the said, was spotted above County Route 527 on December 18, 2024 at around 7:30pm ET.
Three days later, on December 21 at around 7:10pm in Atlantic City, one witness told NUFORC that they documented 'a strange flying saucer' that 'appeared to shake and change shape, but always returning to its original disc shape.'
Shortly after this flying disk left, the witness said it was followed in apparent pursuit by a 'red/pink light' the size of basketball that flew past 'at high speed, flashing randomly and leaving a reddish trail in the sky.'
But the witness was only able to submit video of the first UFO to NUFORC.
Newly elected New Jersey Senator Andy Kim told the public that, while the number of sightings reported to law enforcement have decreased, federal and local investigators are still working on the 100 or so cases that merit investigation.
'DHS [Department of Homeland Security] detailed to me the array of tools they have in NJ for drone detection including thermal sensors, drone-specific radar, radio frequency kits, and visual monitors,' Senator Kim told his constituents just before Christmas.
And even government experts who have criticized the 'media frenzy' and 'conspiracy theories' around the alleged drone sightings have said in recent weeks that some worst case scenarios can't be ruled out yet.
The former head of the Pentagon's UFO-hunting All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), Dr Sean Kirkpatrick, published an op-ed in Scientific American Friday floating the risk that 'foreign or domestic bad actors' were probing US defenses.
'Operators could be probing the limits of legal activities, or in military speak, performing or exploring preparation of the battlespace,' Dr Kirkpatrick wrote.
'They could be flying commercial drones, complete with lights, to test reactions of both the public and the government. As long as they are flying within legal airspace, under legal limits, they can push those limits and measure what the reaction is.'
The now retired government physicist added that this response-time data could one day be used for 'attack planning, illegal drug delivery or other malicious intent.'
Dr Kirkpatrick added a few other possibilities including the chance that the drones' operators 'could be using them intentionally to whip up frenzy, hysteria and panic.'

Police investigating attacks on musicians Pallaso and Alien Skin
January 2, 2025
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the January 2, 2025, incident.
The victims include Joseph Nyanzi, Julius Mugabi, and Becker. Reports indicate that the suspects were armed with pangas, pickaxes, hammers, and stones during the attacks.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the feud between Alien Skin, a resident of Kisungu zone, and Pallaso started from a disagreement during a performance in Buloba, Wakiso District.
The altercation escalated into an attack on Alien Skin’s residence.
At approximately 3:00 a.m on 2nd January, Pallaso and his group allegedly stormed Alien Skin’s residence. However, police from Makindye Police Station intervened and repelled the attack.
Hours later, at 9:00 a.m., a second attack occurred, resulting in destruction of property including five motor vehicles were damaged, with shattered windshields and broken lights and three houses had their glass windows shattered.
They also allegedly stole cash totalling six million shillings.
Two victims are currently receiving treatment at Mengo Hospital, while police continue their investigations.

Cheyenne Reports More UFO Sightings Than Anywhere Else in Wyoming
January 01, 2025
In the vast skies over Wyoming, things aren’t always as they seem. That’s why the Cowboy State is one of the best places to see and possibly explain the unexplainable.
The National UFO Center keeps records of every sighting of an unidentified flying object (UFO) or unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) reported in the United States since 1995.
The website Stacker used that data to compile a list of the top 10 with the most reports of strange, inexplainable sights in the night sky.
The world of UFO and UAP sightings has gotten more serious in the last several years, and more people are looking up and looking for answers.
“I can tell you is that quite a few sightings in Wyoming remain unexplained,” said Richard Beckwith, Rock Springs city attorney and part-time UFO investigator.
He’s spent decades investigating UFO sightings in Wyoming, but had his first personal experience with one spotted near Green River earlier in 2024.
“The phenomenon is real,” he said. “Even the Pentagon has admitted UFOs and UAFs are real, and they can’t explain them. It was treated as a joke for most of the time I’ve been doing it, and now it’s become real.”
The List
Overall, the National UFO Center has 421 reports of UFOs and UAFs in Wyoming. Cheyenne tops the list of Wyoming places with the most sightings, reporting 50 aerial phenomena since 1995.
Seeing Cheyenne at the top doesn’t surprise Beckwith at all. One would expect more sightings in Wyoming’s most populated city, but Cheyenne is also home to a critical U.S. Air Force base.
“Wyoming’s UFO sightings, from my perspective, primarily appear over the Warren Air Force Base and the nearby missile silos,” he said. “There have been quite a few sightings, going back to the 1950s.”
Casper is second with 37 UFO sightings, followed by Laramie with 29, Rock Springs with 17 and Gillette with 15. Cody, Sheridan, Riverton and Evanston round out the bottom half of the list.
Yellowstone National Park sits at the bottom with eight UFO sightings. Sasquatch isn’t the only elusive and mysterious thing hanging around the pristine wilderness of northwest Wyoming.
The state that’s seen and reported the most UFOs is California, with more than 16,500 sightings. The Pentagon attributes most of these sightings to balloons, drones, aircraft and other terrestrial sources.
One thing Wyomingites won’t want to do is try to shoot down any UFOs they spot. If that UFO happens to be a neighbor’s drone, that would violate federal law and could come with a fine and a jail sentence.
Not Explaining The Unexplainable
It’s not a coincidence that the number of sightings corresponds with Wyoming’s most populated areas. Beckwith said that’s how it’s always been, but that doesn’t make these phenomena any easier to explain.
“As a kid, we had the simple explanation that these were aliens from another planet,” he said. “But the longer I’ve done this, the explanations have become more elusive. It’s much more complex than that.”
1/2
Modern-day theories for UFOs and UAP include black technology programs, foreign espionage and astronomical events in addition to the extraterrestrial.
If there are any probable explanations for what’s been seen over Wyoming and elsewhere, the federal government has declined to comment or elaborate.
“They continue to say emphatically that we have no evidence that these objects are extraterrestrial in nature,” he said.
“That begs the question — if they can’t explain it, how can they determine that these objects are also simultaneously not manufactured elsewhere? It's almost like, ‘Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.’”
Recently, there have been three congressional hearings on UFOs and UAFs, and Beckwith said he’s spoken with two members of U.S. Congress about the phenomenon.
Wyoming scientists are skeptical of their findings, but Beckwith described it as one of the rare bipartisan issues that has reached Capitol Hill.
“People who looked at this phenomenon were ridiculed about this stuff,” he said. “That’s changed since 2017, now that the government has admitted they’re real.”
Wyoming Watchers
Beckwith is one of four Wyoming field investigators for the Mutual UFO Network, an organization of civilian volunteers that follow up on and report UFO and UAF sightings.
The number of investigators shows Beckwith how much interest has grown for these unexplainable phenomena in the last decade.
“I have investigators in Cheyenne, Riverton, and two in Rock Springs that investigate sightings all over the state,” he said. “Until a couple of years ago, I was the only one.”
Beckwith described his first experience with a UFO back in March. He used his Sony SR4 camera to capture a video of “anomalous nocturnal lights” hovering near Green River.
“I got the radar records from that night, but haven’t been able to correlate what I saw with any particular targets on the radar,” he said. “It certainly didn't have a transponder. So, to that extent, I can't explain it. But I saw and filmed it.”
Beckwith hopes more Wyomingites will report any UFO or UAF sightings to the National UFO Center or the Mutual UFO Network. Regardless of what people believe they've seen in the sky, he and many others want answers.
There’s a lot of space and open sky in Wyoming. Beckwith believes the Cowboy State could be the key to getting better data and information to shine more light into the darkness surrounding UFOs and UAFs.
“Wyoming is the ninth-largest state in land area, and we have the lowest population,” he said. “Still, we have sightings with several witnesses in different locations. They’re rarer than other places, but they still occur.”

Alien Nut Tucker Carlson 'Set to Beg Donald Trump to Let Him Get to Bottom of America's UFO Mysteries'
Jan. 2 2025, Published 7:00 a.m. ET
Tucker Carlson makes no secret of his deep obsession with UFOs, and sources said he's pleading with the incoming Trump administration to help him get to the bottom of this in 2025.
The former FOX commentator, 55, has brought up the topic many times, RadarOnline.com can reveal.
On his X platform, and recently told his followers: "I think the truth is very, very disruptive."
He added: "It's not just that Lockheed is making a lot of money on anti-gravity technology, or we've been visited by people from another planet. I think there's more there."
Carlson also claimed he was told that UFOs have been recovered by "summoning the craft", which apparently involves some kind of extra-terrestrial contact.
"People don't always understand what Tucker's trying to say, but his delving into UFOs is one of the few things he's not doing solely for attention", said an insider.
"He's convinced that UFOs do exist, and he's spent an awful lot of time on research, looking into conspiracy theories and cover-ups.
"It's a hot topic that merits scrutiny, and now there's a new administration coming in that may be more open and start sharing some UFO intel."
Carlson's pal, SpaceX founder Elon Musk, said UFO sightings are highly classified military experiments and that his 6,000-plus satellites have yet to detect any aliens.
The insider said: "Tucker's grateful that Elon Musk is cautiously interested in the subject and hopes to carry on the discussion. A lot of people don't believe in aliens or UFOs, but Tucker won't let up."

Rep. Andre Carson on UAP / drone investigations: "our adversaries are watching and listening"
Jan 02, 2025
Ask a Pol asks:
What do you make of the debate on the drones and this stuff?
Key Carson:
“It's an interesting debate. I mean, we've had briefings in the SCIF, and obviously they vary from the open hearing because it's a committee of jurisdiction,” Rep. Andre Carson* exclusively tells Ask a Pol. “But the challenge with the open hearings is that our adversaries are watching and listening for context, clues.”
Yup? You are very good at saying that same thing…
*Carson chaired the historic first public UFO hearing in the US Capitol in 50 yearsback in 2022 from his perch on the House Intelligence Committee under then-Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA). He’s also exclusively told Ask a Pol he’s interested in the top Democratic slot if Congress ever authorizes a Select UAP Committee.
Caught our ear:
Did you hear I got you in trouble?
“Uh-oh, uh-oh,” Carson replies. “Talk to me, talk to me.”
Got you all quoted up on the Joe Rogan podcast.
“Stop playing,” Carson says. “No sir. No sir.”
Yeah, bro.
“Dude, c’mon man.”
Laslo laughs.
“Which episode?” Carson says. “Come on bro, which episode right now?”
