Correct, there would have to be a timing device. Without a timing device, the only other way is remote detonation.
One thing to consider here, is maybe that person was isolated and given information to alter his mind or maybe they had dirt on him and gave him the safe family suicide deal then remote hacking to alter his files, send emails, and change data. A consideration. The whole thing does not make sense.
