Starlink and the Italian government have been in discussions since mid-2023. According to the report, talks are ongoing and centered around a five-year contract valued at $1.6 billion. This contract would provide a broad range of top-level encryption for the government's telephone and internet services. Archbishop of Canterbury’s Tenure Ends After Resigning Amid Child Sex Abuse Scandal
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby’s tenure in office ends Monday, after an investigation found that he failed to tell police about serial abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps as soon as he became aware of it.
Welby, the head of Church of England and spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion, will lay down his bishop’s crozier – a ceremonial long staff – in a symbolic act which marks the end of his ministry. Most of his official functions will be delegated to the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell.
Welby had announced in November that he would resign after an independent investigation into the late John Smyth, a prominent attorney who the report said sexually, psychologically and physically abused about 30 boys and young men in the United Kingdom and 85 in Africa from the 1970s until his death in 2018.
The 251-page report of the Makin Review concluded that Welby failed to report Smyth to authorities when he was informed of the abuse in August 2013, soon after he became Archbishop of Canterbury. Had he done so, Smyth could have been stopped sooner.
Welby’s initial refusal to step aside kindled anger about a lack of accountability at the highest reaches of the church.
The resignation comes against the backdrop of widespread historical sexual abuse in the Church of England. A 2022 report by the Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse said a culture that gave more support to alleged perpetrators than their victims helped make the Church of England “a place where abusers could hide.”
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the symbolic head of the Anglican Communion, which has more than 85 million members in 165 countries. While each national church has its own leaders, the Archbishop of Canterbury is considered first among equals.
Choosing a successor will take time. It is possible the new selection will be announced in the autumn.
The process begins with the Crown Nominations Commission, which nominates candidates for the post and other bishoprics in England. The commission will share the name of a preferred candidate to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who asks the nominee whether he or she wants the job. If the nominee declines then the prime minister has to ask the commission for an alternative.
Starmer conveys the recommendation to King Charles III.
The commission has 16 members, including the Archbishop of York, representatives of the clergy and laypeople and a chair appointed by the prime minister.
Voting members of the commission will also include representatives from the Churches of the Anglican Communion in five global regions – Asia, the Americas, Africa, Europe and Oceania.

Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer reportedly left a November meeting with Donald Trump believing the US president-elect will either support an Israeli military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities or direct a US strike on those sites himself.
The revelation was reported Monday in the Axios news site, which cited two sources who spoke to Dermer — a close confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — after the meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
The report said that Israel is seriously considering a strike of its own and that outgoing US President Joe Biden’s aides have also urged him to carry out a US strike before Trump takes office. No active conversations about such a strike are still being held at the White House, Axios clarified.
Dermer is reportedly slated to travel back to Washington this week for meetings with Biden and Trump aides.

Committee on House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight says top members of Jan. 6 Select Committee should face investigation.
The Pentagon dismissed an order from President Donald J. Trump to use the National Guard to ensure safety on Jan. 6, intentionally delayed Guard deployment for hours, lied about it to congressional leaders, and used its own inspector general to cover it all up, a U.S. House report concludes.
After a two-year investigation, the Committee on House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight put the blame for failure to get National Guard troops to the U.S. Capitol on former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, two Pentagon Army generals, and Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller.
“Over the past 24 months of this investigation, my subcommittee staff have faced incredible obstacles in pursuit of the truth; missing and deleted documents, hidden evidence, unaccounted-for video footage, and uncooperative bureaucrats,” said U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), chairman of the subcommittee.
'Incredibly, it would take nearly four years for video footage to emerge of Speaker Pelosi — in a rare moment of true leadership — admitting that she was fully responsible.'
“This report reveals that there was not just one single cause for what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6; but it was a series of intelligence, security, and leadership failures at several levels and numerous entities,” Loudermilk wrote in the report, set for release on Dec. 17.
“Even amid multiple failures, there were two common elements that significantly contributed to the security issues: an excessive amount of political influence on critical decisions, and a greater concern over the optics than for protecting life and property,” Loudermilk wrote.
The Pentagon failures were covered up and made worse by the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General, which issued a report “that contains fabricated information, ignores crucial information, fails to interview key individuals, and appears to have collaborated with DoD to portray a false narrative,” the report said.

This disappoints the Trump working class that believed making America great again meant they were going to get their jobs back.
American corporations, universities, and non-profit organizations like H-1B work visas for a variety of reasons. A H-1B visa recipient is an indentured servant. He or she is paid substantially less but cannot leave the employer for higher pay as the visa is tied to the specific employer. This also has the result of denying the indentured servant employment or protest rights as the indentured servant’s presence in the US is tied to the visa that is tied to the employer. For example, a H-1B visa holder cannot file a discrimination complaint.
