Crime safety app Citizen targets $42M in fundraising push
Citizen went from having the first version of its app banned by the Apple app store in 2017 for encouraging vigilantism, to closing a $72 million Series C in early 2021 at a valuation just shy of $500 million. The round size suggests that Citizen’s appeal is more muted than it was four years ago. The New York-based company, which developed its to notify users of nearby safety incidents, has attracted criticism for encouraging excessive surveillance and leading to privacy violations.
