AFL sent letters to 249 officials in sanctuary jurisdictions across the country, including 12 in Minnesota, and their message was clear: federal law takes precedence over local sanctuary policies, and violating it could lead to serious repercussions, including criminal charges and civil liability.
“Sanctuary policies are against the law, make a mockery of America’s democratic principles, and demonstrate a shocking disrespect for our Constitution and our citizens,” stated James Rogers, AFL’s senior counsel.
All of the letters state, in part, “We have identified your jurisdiction as a sanctuary jurisdiction that is violating federal law. Such lawlessness subjects you and your subordinates to significant risk of criminal and civil liability. Accordingly, we are sending this letter to put you on notice of this risk and insist that you comply with our nation’s laws.”
The letters were sent to: Cottonwood County Commissioners, Dakota County Manager Heidi Welsch, Jackson County Administrator Ryan Krosch, Kandiyohi County Administrator Kelsey Baker, Lincoln County Administrator Aimee Primus, Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg, Nobles County Administrator Bruce Heitkamp, Pipestone County Administrator Steve Ewing, Ramsey County Manager Ling Becker, Watonwan County Board Chairman Dillon Melheim, Hennepin County Administrator David J. Hough, and Anoka County Administrator Jim Dickinson.

“Sick of Both Kelces”: Disaster for ESPN as Calls Mount Against Jason Kelce After Show Tanked on Debut.
Jason Kelce‘s new show, They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce, premiered on January 4, 2025. With big Philly vibes and even bigger expectations. Filmed at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, the show brought in SNACKTIME as the house band and leaned heavily into Kelce’s charm. But despite all the hype, the ratings for the debut weren’t exactly what ESPN was hoping for.

Massachusetts Democrat Gov. Maura Healey on Monday ordered an inspection of all state-run emergency shelters after an illegal migrant was arrested with an AR-15 rifle and hundreds of thousands of dollars in drugs found in his taxpayer-funded hotel room.
Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was hit with illegal possession of a firearm, heroin trafficking and other charges in late December after local law enforcement in Revere, Massachusetts, found an AR-15 rifle, ammunition and around five kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine inside the Quality Inn hotel room he was living in. That hotel is among the 128 hotels and motels across the state that have been used to house asylum seekers and other homeless families since the immigration crisis began.

Mark Cuban Reacts to Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Shift.
Mark Cuban called out Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and President-elect Donald Trump for the tariffs "Americans are going to see" from countries that "censor Meta services as a means of pressuring them into removing any restrictions that impact your profitability in those countries."
Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday that Meta, one of the largest social media companies, encompassing Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads and other products platforms, will roll back a number of its censorship policies to become a free speech platform.
Newsweek reached out to a Meta communications representative and Trump's transition team via email for comment.
Why It Matters:
Meta had often set the norm for how platforms regulate and fact-check content, so this is a drastic change from its previous approach of restricting specific language and topics. This switch by Zuckerberg reflects an increasingly pro-free speech attitude in Silicon Valley over recent years.

Legacy Media Die-Off In Full Swing As WaPo Set To Lay Off Dozens More.
The Washington Post will lay off “dozens” of workers in its business division amid ongoing financial struggles and an editorial exodus, former CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy reported Monday.
In what sources familiar with the matter reportedly described to Darcy as “deep” cuts, the Bezos-owned publication will purge dozens from its business side. Those expected firings follow a huge swath of their editorial stars jumping ship for other publications.
Star reporter Josh Dawsey announced his departure Monday as he moves on to The Wall Street Journal.

CNN on Trial for Defamation as Network Execs Forced to Take the Stand.
There has been a rise in defamation cases involving news networks in the United States. In April 2024, Fox News settled a lawsuit for $787 million after broadcasting false claims that voting machines were rigged in the 2020 election.
In December, Donald Trump settled his lawsuit against ABC News for $15 million after the station had broadcast claims that Trump had raped, rather than sexually assaulted, E. Jean Carroll. Carroll had sued Trump for defamation for $88.3 for sexual assault and defamation.
Media organizations will keenly watch the CNN case to assess the limits of the First Amendment's free speech protections.

The United States Congress has been branded a 'nursing home' after Nancy Pelosi was pictured using her walking frame to get around the floor.
Heading into the 2025 session, the average age of Congress members is 79 days older than last session, at 58.9 years old.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, suffered a fall last month in Europe and underwent hip replacement surgery.
She used a frame on Monday when she took part in a joint session of Congress to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election.
But the striking image of that moment has sparked questions about whether people in their 80s should still be working in such crucial roles.
'Congress really has become a nursing home,' one social media user wrote.
'Term limits. That's what America demands,' another added.
