‘Lost control’: Albanese govt overlooks $7bn taxpayer expense in federal budget
The Albanese government has left taxpayers on the hook for a $7.4 billion budget blowout after failing to include the costs of public servant wage increases in its financial projections.
The Albanese government has left a gaping $7.4 billion hole in the federal budget after failing to properly account for public servant wage increases.
The staggering omision was uncovered by the Australian Financial Review on Wednesday as the government has attempted to promote its economic management.
Despite agreeing to a substantial pay deal for 185,000 federal public servants, the government has left the funding for these wage rises out of its financial projections.
The AFR revealed the government’s mid-year budget update assumed the rapid growth in public sector wages will come to a halt by mid-2025.
It has anticipated that public servant salary costs will remain flat at $30 billion until at least 2028.
