Astrofag here. I was viewing Mars recently, and I can confirm that the surface looked very uniform. I thought it was my equipment. Pic related is my work from that night.
At the resolution shown in my pic before I should be able to resolve some detail. You can see a hint of a polar cap in the pic. I thought my focus was off, and admittedly the atmosphere quality that night was bad, but I should have gotten something. I'm inclined to believe the planetwide dust storm from that NASA Tweet. Pic related is a similar capture of Mars from a few years ago. It was farther away then and a little harder to resolve, and I used a specialized Mars filter to help.
