Exactly, if the heat is moving from a battery through an insulated copper wire, it is conduction. The only fluid available would be the surrounding air, but not likely since you are dealing with insulated wires.
If someone "devotes their life to this stuff" then I expect them to understand this basic concept. Also, are we to expect that 12 gauge copper wire is not going to pop like a fuse at 6000 F?
