US companies still paying billions in taxes to Russia – media

American firms paid more money to the Russian state in 2023 than in 2022, according to pro-Ukraine activists

American corporations still active in Russia paid $1.2 billion in taxes to the Russian state in 2023, according to figures published by Newsweek on Saturday. More than 300 US firms are believed to still be operating in Russia.

The figures were provided to Newsweek by ==B4Ukraine, a Kiev-sponsored group of NGOs that has spent the last three years hounding Western companies to cut their ties with Moscow.

According to the group, the five companies that paid the most profit taxes to Russia in 2023 were tobacco companyPhilip MorrisInternational ($220 million), beverage corporationPepsiCo($135 million), confectionary companyMars($99 million), health and hygiene consumer goods firmProcter & Gamble($67 million), and confectionary companyMondelez.

American companies paid a total of $1.2 billion in taxes to the Russian state in 2023, up from $712 million in 2022, according to an earlier report compiled by B4Ukraine. Their contribution makes the US the largest source of foreign taxes paid in Russia.

Although a flood of Western companies ceased operations in Russia after the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022,some 123 large American firms remain, according to research from the Yale School of Management. When small and medium enterprises are taken into account, Yale estimates that around 328 American companies are active in Russia.

Aside from pressure campaigns organized by the likes of B4Ukraine, Western sanctions have played a role in forcing some firms to exit the Russian market.British consumer-goods giant Unilever pulled out of Russia in October, with CEO Hein Schumacher complaining that the company faced difficulties moving cash out of Russia and had experienced issues reviewing financial results and controlling how its brands were managed.

According to divestment rules introduced by the Russian government last year, firms exiting Russia need to obtain government permissionfor their sale, and arerequired to sell their assets at a 50% discount and pay an exit tax of between 10% and 15%.

Between February 2022 and December 2023,companies that sold up their Russian operations lost a combined $103 billion, the New York Times reported, citing financial records. These firms also handed over at least $1.25 billion in exit taxes to the Russian state, the newspaper added.

(I bet Zelensky thought this would shame Western companies and Russia, but Russia is proud of the free press. Kek, Everyone is so over Ukraine. All their tactics are losing)

Zelensky claims he wants peace deal in 2025

An agreement should come with security guarantees from Kiev’s Western backers, the Ukrainian leader has stressed

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has expressed his desire to secure a peace agreement with Russia within the year, but emphasized that Kiev requires strong security guarantees from Western backers as key to any deal. He made the remarks during an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai News 24, released on Friday.

Zelensky has long insisted that Kiev needs firm security assurances to achieve long-term peace, naming membership of NATO as the best option. Moscow, however, has argued that Ukraine’s NATO aspirations were among the root causes of the conflict, and maintains that any settlement must result in the country’s neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.

“It is our wish to get [security] guarantees and to end the war this year, we will do anything for this,” Zelensky said. He mentioned the urgency of restoring peace, claiming that Ukraine wants it “more than anyone else” because “we lose more than everyone else, especially with regard to people.” However, he insisted that security guarantees must come first.

“This is for the protection of Ukraine… and the whole of Europe… So that Russia will not return again with aggression,” Zelensky said. He also accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of aiming to destroy Ukraine, a charge Moscow has brushed aside as ridiculous.

Zelensky stated he is looking forward to US President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office, as he expects him to help bring the conflict to an end.

“Trump will be very important in [peace talks] mediation. His team has already started contacts,” Zelensky explained. Trump has often claimed he can end the conflict within 24 hours. However, speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida earlier this week, the president-elect said it might take up to six months after taking office to help Moscow and Kiev reach a deal. Trump has not provided specifics on how he would achieve a settlement, though reports suggest his team is considering freezing the current battle lines.

Zelensky has previously questioned Trump’s claims about ending the conflict swiftly, arguing that “there are no people today in the world who could just have a word with Putin and end the war.” He also opposed Trump’s reported plans to persuade Kiev to cede claims to its former territories, insisting that Ukraine’s territorial integrity should be part of any settlement.

Moscow has long stated it is open to talks but maintained that any deal must begin with Ukraine ceasing military operations and acknowledging the “territorial reality” that it will not regain control of regions that chose to join Russia. Moscow has also rejected the idea of a temporary truce, arguing that freezing the conflict would allow Kiev to regroup and prepare for further hostilities.

(This song explains what Ukraine will get for the end of the war. He keeps demanding the same things, he's wishing Bidan was negotiating at this point. Z hasn't insulted Trump for a month or so, based upon is a terrible tactic with Trump. Dream on Zelensky!)
