More likely, they are using microwaves. the IR spectrum would burn the trees from the outside in

 

Microwaves excite anything that conducts energy, so grass b urns, but tree bar doesn't

 

This is why you can see the beams, the water in the atmosphere is excited and vaporizes, so you see a straight line of steam. Also why the blue roofs and umbrellas might have been able to survive the microwaves.

 

would also explain why the twin towers had all that unburnt paper laying around, as paper is a very poor conductor. basically anything that you shouldn't put in a microwave will super excite and ignite itself or whatever it is in contact with.
