She recently appeared on FOX News and talked about the California fires, describing them as a failure of government on the most ‘fundamental’ things and she is exactly right. This is part of what is so maddening about this situation.
Gavin Newsom, Karen Bass, and other Democrat leaders bend over backwards to focus on left wing social justice issues that have absolutely nothing to do with the role of government. Yet when it comes to the most basic functions of government, such as keeping buildings from burning down, they have failed completely.
They do not understand the role of government at its most essential level.
Bari Wiess: Los Angeles is being governed and the state of California is being governed by people who have lost sight of the basics of governing. They have lost sight of the idea that we pay you a tax so that you take care of basics for us. And nothing could be more basic than preventing the burning down of, as you just said in your introduction, an area twice the size of Manhattan, right? It’s hard to conceive of how big this is.
I woke up to text messages. Almost everyone we know has evacuated their home. We know people that have lost their homes. And the reason that there’s so little trust and the reason that you saw in that clip that mother confronting Gavin Newsom with such rage is because there’s so much that led up to this moment. There was — you know, just to choose one example, in our neighborhood, you know, a middle class neighborhood in L.A., not particularly fancy, the police, if you called them for a robbery, and there were many robberies in our neighborhood, they would take an hour, sometimes two hours to show up. It had become almost like Brazil. It had become normal for middle class people, upper middle class people to pay for private security just despite the fact that they were paying enormously high taxes already.
So, was it the fact that, you know, the city cut the spending and the fire department by $17 million? Was it the fact that they were spending more on homelessness initiatives than on preventing fire?
Was it DEI? Look, I don’t know. What I know is that the broader context in which this fire is happening is a context of total incompetency and leaders who are putting their niche, luxury issues, ideological issues over and above the most fundamental things, keeping you and your family safe from crime, keeping you and your family safe from fires.
This is one of the reasons so many people are angry about the fires. California’s entire leadership should resign in disgrace and be prosecuted

A man is being investigated by police in Wales after a tweet reposted by Elon Musk accused the Welsh Refugee Council of using 12-year-old schoolgirls in an ad to “entice migrant men to come to Wales.”
The original video, posted by the Welsh Refugee Council (WRC) in 2023, shows a group of girls in school uniforms explaining why Wales is a welcoming place for migrants.
“Wales is seen as a nation of sanctuary, we welcome anyone and everyone,” states one of the girls in the video clip, which gives advice on how migrants can be helped in obtaining welfare benefits, applying for bank accounts and getting medical treatment.
Following sustained outrage over the grooming gangs scandal in the UK, the video went viral again on X over the weekend after it was shared by Elon Musk.
“In Wales, the Welsh Refugee Council is using 12-year-old girls in ads meant to entice migrant men to come to Wales. Most members of this council are from the Middle East, India and Pakistan. I think I’m going to throw up,” stated the tweet.
After Musk reposting the tweet ensured it went viral and was seen millions of times, the WRC claimed its members were being “harassed” in the form of abuse and racist comments directed towards them
The WRC said it took “false and defamatory statements seriously”, while the Welsh government condemned those who posted the video as being “utterly irresponsible”.
According to the BBC, South Wales Police are now investigating the matter.
“An allegation of malicious communications was reported at around 11.30pm on Saturday January 11 concerning a post on the social media platform ‘X’,” said South Wales Police.
“The matter is being looked into by South Wales Police.”
The individual who posted the viral tweet also confirmed he was under investigation by the authorities.
“I am currently being investigated by South Wales Police for my post about the Welsh Refugee Council using young girls to entice migrants who want to move to Wales. I do not live in Britain, but they might try to extradite me for this. This is peak insanity,” he commented.
Responding to the controversy, the former leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd, Andrew RT Davies, accused Labour Welsh government ministers of using schoolchildren as “propaganda”, to promote an “ideologically motivated project”.
Davies said it was “highly inappropriate for a political organisation to be going into schools and using children in propaganda like this.”

(DCNF)—The Net Zero Asset Managers (NZAM) coalition — a United Nations–sponsored collection of financial services companies that have pledged to negate their portfolio’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner — suspended activities after investment firm BlackRock announced its departure from the group, according to a press release.
BlackRock, which manages more than $10 trillion and has been a leader in environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing, announced its exit from NZAM Thursday, with its Vice-Chair Philipp Hildebrand saying the firm’s involvement in the environmental coalition “caused confusion regarding BlackRock’s practices and subjected us to legal inquiries from various public officials.” Now, NZAM has pressed pause altogether, halting operations while it conducts a review of its activities, an NZAM press release published Monday said.
“Recent developments in the U.S. and different regulatory and client expectations in investors’ respective jurisdictions have led to NZAM launching a review of the initiative to ensure NZAM remains fit for purpose in the new global context,” NZAM reportedly wrote in the letter. “As the initiative undergoes this review, it is suspending activities to track signatory implementation and reporting. NZAM will also remove the commitment statement and list of NZAM signatories from its website, as well as their targets and related case studies, pending the outcome of the review.”
A slew of other financial services had left NZAM prior to BlackRock’s Thursday exit, including Goldman Sachs Group, Wells Fargo & Co., Citigroup, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co. BlackRock’s exit came amid a broader corporate strategy shift away from ESG investing, with the firm only supporting about 4% of the 493 environmental and social investment proposals that shareholders put forward between the end of June 2023 and the end of June 2024, down from a rate of 47% in 2021.
BlackRock was a major supporter of ESG investing in years prior, with CEO Larry Fink saying in 2020 that “climate risk is investment risk” and that climate change would lead to a “fundamental reallocation of capital.”
“The destruction of NZAM is a huge win for consumers,” Will Hild, executive director of the conservative nonprofit Consumers’ Research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Although there is a lot of work left to be done, what was effectively a cartel of asset managers has finally ceased taking the focus of businesses off of consumers, raising prices for everyday Americans everywhere from the gas pump to the grocery store.”
