Starbucks Pulls Back Access for People who Don’t Pay
Starbucks is rolling back a policy that allows people to hang out there or use the bathroom without buying anything. In 2018, there was a fierce uproar and nationwide protests against racism when two black men who hadn’t purchased anything, and refused to leave, were arrested at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. Starbucks later apologized, reached a settlement with them and trained its workers on racial biases. Starbucks set a precedent of buckling to the diversity industry and funding the industry to stave off protests that caused loss of business.
After bathrooms were declared open to all, homeless people loitered at the coffee shops, drug addicts used the bathrooms to inject drugs, and Starbucks employees suffered threats and violence. In 2022, Starbucks closed 16 stores around the country — including six in Los Angeles and six in its hometown of Seattle — for repeated safety issues. – JW Williams
