Israel Delays Approving Hostage Deal, Accusing Hamas Of Reneging & Stoking 'Crisis'
An expected vote by Israel's security cabinet to approve the Gaza ceasefire deal has been delayed by several hours, followed by an accusation from the Prime Minister’s Office accusing Hamas of trying to thwart finalization of the deal at the last minute.
The hold-up could prove deeply awkward and embarrassing, given the signal from Israeli officials has been that it's all but a done deal, and on Wednesday the United States and Qatar were the first to pronounce an agreement had been reached, with Biden issuing formal congratulatory remarks.
"Hamas is reneging on the understandings and creating a last-minute crisis that is preventing an agreement," Netanyahu's office said. "The Israeli cabinet will not convene until the mediators notify Israel that Hamas has accepted all elements of the agreement."
President-elect Donald Trump has also praised the "epic" deal, describing in a Wednesday statement that it "only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies."
Israeli media says the government is still "holding off" on acceptance of the deal as of Thursday afternoon (local time). Times of Israel writes the following:
Israel was still holding off on Thursday afternoon from officially declaring that a ceasefire-hostage release deal announced a day earlier by mediators had been reached with Hamas, insisting that details remained to be finalized and that Hamas was throwing last-minute wrenches into the negotiations.
Nevertheless, most Israeli officials indicated the agreement was all but a done deal, with the focus moving to the internal political battle playing out ahead of the expected cabinet and security cabinet votes, which were delayed by at least several hours.
It could be hardline holdouts in Netanyahu's security cabinet who are attempting to gain influence in their resistance to the agreement, which they have called a bad deal.
"Other reports in Israeli media suggested instead that the delay in convening the cabinet was due to attempts to gain the support of far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has threatened to quit the government along with National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir if the war is ended," Times of Israel continues.
The impending deal reportedly lays out an initial six week ceasefire phase which includes gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Central Gaza as well as the return of displaced Palestinians to North Gaza.
Of the some 100 hostages still held by Hamas, at least one-third are believed already deceased. Dozens were released upon an initial deal struck early in the conflict.

A buffer zone between the Israeli-controlled territory and Syria has long been manned by the UN Observation Mission (UNDOF).
As the HTS advanced on Damascus last month, the IDF moved into the buffer zone and in some instances advanced past it into Syrian territory.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the IDF position on Mt Hermon in mid-December, calling it “an exciting historical moment.” Within days, he announced a 40 million-shekel ($11 million) plan to double the Israeli population of the Golan Heights.

A female prisoner’s location was hit in an IDF airstrike on Gaza just hours after a ceasefire deal announcement, according to a spokesman of the militants
The military arm of Hamas has said that an Israeli strike on Gaza that followed the announcement of a ceasefire deal had targeted a place where a female hostage was being held.
The agreement to pause the war in Gaza and release Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners was announced on Wednesday by US President-elect Donald Trump. The deal is expected to come into effect on January 19 and include three phases, each of which will last 42 days.
Three female hostages are expected to be released on Sunday if the deal goes into effect as planned. They would be the first of 33 hostages in Gaza, both living and deceased, to be released as part of the first phase.
In a Telegram post on Thursday, Al-Qassam Brigades Military Spokesman Abu Ubaida claimed that the woman targeted in the Israeli strike was one of the hostages expected to be freed this week.
“Any aggression and shelling at this stage by the enemy could turn the freedom of a prisoner into a tragedy,” the spokesman stated without giving any more details regarding the hostage’s fate.
Israel intensified its airstrikes across Gaza just hours after the ceasefire and hostage release deal was announced, killing at least 70 people overnight, according to the enclave’s health officials. The attacks came as people there took to the streets to celebrate the truce.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told CNN on Thursday they had “conducted strikes on approximately 50 terror targets across the Gaza Strip” over the past day. The IDF also blamed Hamas for firing a rocket into Israel on Thursday; the incident caused no casualties.
On Thursday, Israel delayed a cabinet vote on the ceasefire deal, blaming Hamas for reneging on parts of the agreement. The militant group has rejected the claims.
Some media have attributed the failure to ratify the agreement to opposition from key parties in Israel’s governing coalition. The Religious Zionism Party and its leader, Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have condemned the deal and threatened to quit if the Jewish state does not return to war after the first stage of the ceasefire.

The LPO is continuing its lame duck lending spree through the very end of the Biden administration, even though Republicans and the DOE’s internal watchdog have called for a freeze on LPO activity due to concerns about the office’s safeguards pertaining to conflicts of interest.
LPO is offering Michigan’s DTE Electric and DTE Gas $9 billion to develop more green energy generation and replace gas lines, while Alliant Energy and its subsidiaries have been offered $3 billion to incorporate more wind power and batteries into its grid. Other companies that LPO extended loan packages to include PacifiCorp — which will look to use the money to build 700 miles of new transmission lines — and New Jersey’s Jersey Central Power and Light.
“On January 16, 2025, LPO announced eight conditional commitments through its Title 17 Energy Infrastructure Reinvestment (EIR) program, comprising $22.92 billion to utilities serving more than 14.78 million customers across 12 states,” LPO said of the offers announced Thursday. “Projects supported by today’s announcements include transmission, clean generation, energy storage, grid modernization, and gas pipeline investments. CVS Caremark Rx blasted the findings for cherry picking certain drugs in an effort to push what it called an ‘anti-PBM’ narrative.
The report, which levels the same allegations at CVS and Cigna, is the latest indictment of America’s broken healthcare system and comes on the heels of last month’s shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The U.S. is notorious for incurring the highest costs per capita of any wealthy nation, yet failing to achieve an even remotely equivalent improvement in patient outcomes versus Europe’s social market-based economies.
Critics argue that is due largely to the highly opaque manner in which needless markups are hidden to conceal inefficiencies that serve various vested interests. These include, but are not limited to, the big three drug middlemen known as pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs).

A thousand percent increase in the price of a drug that costs $10 wholesale would result in a retail price of $110.
This markup rate applied to 22% of the specialty therapies examined, including Imatinib , a generic used to treat leukemia, or non-oncological Tadalafil for pulmonary hypertension. Others such as Lamivudine needed by HIV-positive patients were nearly quadruple the price of their acquisition cost.

Concerns about Israel’s newfound hostility toward Syria’s new Islamist government, run by al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) grew substantially today after an Israeli drone attacked a military convoy belonging to the new government in the southern Quneitra Governorate. Three people were killed, two soldiers and a civilian.
Despite hundreds of Israeli airstrikes on remnants of the Assad government across Syria in the past month, this is significant because it is the first time Israel has attacked active personnel with the new, post-Assad government.
Israel was supposed to be happy with the regime change, and Prime Minister Netanyahu even took credit for Assad’s ouster last month. This did come with Israel’s invasion and occupation of significant territory in southern Syria though, including parts of the Quneitra and Daraa Governorates.
In recent days, Israel has been more openly hostile toward the HTS, and used this as an excuse for extending their occupation of those parts of Syria indefinitely. The HTS has talked about trying to be on friendly terms with Israel, but this doesn’t seem to be in the cards at the end of the day.
Israel has taken the demilitarized zone previously held by the UN Syria Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), along with some towns and villages across the zone in Syria itself.
In al-Harra, a village in Quneitra Israeli troops have ordered over 1,000 civilians to leave. They arrived one day, told the imam to use the Muezzin microphone to announce the order for everyone to leave by 3 p.m. the same day.
The civilians left, especially the women and children. A lot of the men stayed and some people are trying to return. There was no real provision made for displaced people, and most of those who fled were given little to no time to gather belongings, so they feel they have little choice but to return, even if it risks attacks by Israeli forces. Right now, it is estimated that around half of the population of al-Harrahas been displaced.
Though Israel initially presented this as an immediate need for border security along the border between Syria and the part of Syria Israel had already occupied since 1967. In recent days though the talk of a long-term presence has many fearing it’s just another permanent Israeli occupation.
Though the US State Department has endorsed the Israeli invasion and occupation of Syria, it has led to disquiet in the international community. Turkey is particular, a strong backer of the HTS, has criticized the Israeli aggression, and demanded that they withdraw from Syria, warning “unfavorable outcomes” if they stay.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry angrily rejected the Turkish position, insisting Turkey is the real “imperialist actor.” Turkey has been intervening against the Kurdish SDF in northern Syria for weeks, and President Erdogan’s call for Israeli withdrawal was couched as the international community taking “hands off Syria” to allow Turkey to wipe out ISIS and the SDF.

This goal was to be accomplished through worldwide mercantile colonization, including heavy involvement in the international slave and drug trades, and war against a succession of leading European continental powers: Spain, France, Holland, Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottomans, and Russia. The rival that could not be immediately suppressed was the U.S., which declared independence in 1776. So recapture of the U.S. also became a priority.
The nation that resisted most vigorously was France. England attacked France by ruining its currency via credit bubbles, leading directly to the destruction of French society through the Seven Years War and economic collapse, followed by the French Revolution.
