Evacuations ordered after fire erupts at Moss Landing Power Plant

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. – Fire crews responded to a fire on Thursday at the Moss Landing Power Plant and authorities warned nearby residents to close windows and doors and shut off air systems.
The battery storage facility caught fire about 3 p.m. and as of 8 p.m. crews were still battling the blaze. No injuries have been reported, a Monterey County sheriff's official said.
Highway 1 is closed in both directions in Moss Landing. There is no estimated time for reopening the highway, and travelers on northbound Highway 1 are being directed off at the junction with Highway 183. Southbound travelers are being directed off at Struve Road, according to Caltrans
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office issued Evacuation Orders for areas of Moss Landing south of the Elkhorn Slough, North of Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way, and West of Castroville Boulevard and Elkhorn Road to the ocean for the following zones: MRY-B037, MRY-B047, MRY-B050, MRY-B051,MRY-B053, MRY-B058, MRY-B060.
The Castroville Recreation Center is being opened as a Temporary Evacuation Point at 11261 Crane Street.
Full road closures are expected at:
Dolan Road and Castroville Boulevard
Highway 1 at Salinas Road
Highway 1 at Merritt Street
Residents are also asked to stay out of the area to allow for access of emergency vehicles.
The plant is a natural gas-powered electricity generation plant on Cabrillo Highway in Moss Landing, an unincorporated area of Monterey County.
