Protecting yourself from harmful chemicals from Moss Landing battery plant fire
Dr. Steven Prager, a specialist in immunology and asthma with Salinas Valley Health, emphasizes the risks posed by toxic particulate matter from the fire.
"Our biggest concern is toxic particulate matter, which poses a danger to anyone's respiratory health, particularly those with asthma, COPD, and other chronic lung diseases," said Prager.
While specific toxins are unidentified, exposure to high concentrations can cause severe respiratory issues.
Dr. Prager advises residents to close windows and doors, stay indoors, and turn off air systems to prevent exposure.
He warned that while masks such as N95s might offer some protection, they may not be sufficient against chemical gases, stressing, "Without a full respirator, I would be very cautious out there."
