South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed a bill into law that will allow the government to seize property from farmers based on their skin color. Farmers’ rights organization AfriForum vowed to fight the Expropriation Bill in court, and the second-largest ruling party threatened to leave the coalition.

So-called “Expropriation without Compensation” has been debated in South Africa for many years, as the left-wing African National Congress (ANC) party complained that the majority of land is still in the hands of white farmers. In reality, the largest share of land in South Africa (14%) is owned by the government. On Jan. 23, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Expropriation Bill into law, which had been passed by the previous Parliament in 2022:

“Local, provincial and national authorities will use this legislation to expropriate land in the public interest for varied reasons that seek, among others, to promote inclusivity and access to natural resources.” The law expressly allows the government to take away farms if “the expropriating authority has without success attempted to reach an agreement with the owner or holder of a right in property for the acquisition thereof on reasonable terms.”

Non-white Landowners own 26.7% of agricultural land and control more than 46% of South Africa’s agricultural potential, News 24 reported. “Twice as much land has been transferred to black entrepreneurs and farmers through ordinary commercial purchases than the state has managed to buy for black owners as part of its land redistribution programme,” a study found.

South Africa has been governed by a “Government of National Unity” (GNU) since the ANC lost its absolute majority in 2024, which it held since the end of Apartheid in 1994. The ANC currently rules together with the second-largest party, the reform-oriented Democratic Alliance, the majority Zulu Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and the right-wing Patriotic Alliance (PA).

Mysterious Wildfires Breakout Near North Carolina Towns Destroyed by Hurricane Helene

Three wildfires have erupted near North Carolina towns that were severely impacted by Hurricane Helene last year.

The first wildfire, called the Crooked Creek Fire, started in McDowell County on Wednesday. It burned nearly 250 acres and was only 55% contained.

A second wildfire, the North Fork Fire, started hours after the Crooked Creek Fire burned 60 acres and is 0% contained.

The McDowell County Emergency Services stated, “Local fire departments are on scene and working in coordination with the U.S. Forest Service to provide structure protection and monitor fire behavior.”

“Emergency personnel will continue to remain on-site throughout the day to monitor the situation and ensure further containment of the fire,” added fire officials.

According to a CNN report, “At least six FBI leaders” have been removed or told to resign by Monday.

This adds to the purge that took place this week at the Department of Justice, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

At least a dozen employees at the DOJ were fired on Monday, mainly those involved in the political prosecutions levied against President Trump during “the Pause” between his administrations.

At the NLRB, President Trump fired both General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo and Gwynne Wilcox, the Democrat board member appointed by Joe Biden.

Commissioners Charlotte Burrows and Jocelyn Samuels at the EEOC were fired as well, the first firing by a President since the board’s creation under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

A missing seat already leaves just two members, falling short of a quorum and rendering the commission ineffective.

FBI whistleblower Kyle Seraphin revealed last night that the purge went beyond the six Executive Assistant Directors; it also included 25 Special Agents in Charge.

According to Seraphin, there are three individual leadership positions at the top of the FBI: the Director, the Deputy Director, and the Associate Deputy Director.

Serious criminal charges are getting thrown out because of budget cuts in the federal prosecution service, an Ontario police chief says.

Hamilton, Ont. police chief Frank Bergen voiced frustration and disappointment at a police services board meeting after learning that the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) dropped 19 drug trafficking charges laid by Hamilton officers earlier this month.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada handles prosecutions for federal statutes, such as charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, including trafficking.

Bergen said many serious cases, notably involving the trafficking of fentanyl, had been stayed or withdrawn “without reasonable explanation.”

Bergen said the issue was likely related to a billing cap imposed by the government on contract federal prosecutors.

The prosecution service confirmed this is the case.

“As with all public agencies, we are managing our operations within our allocated budget,” a spokesperson told True North. “This is one of our key responsibilities and is tied to the sound stewardship of public funds.” Continue…

NDP ministers refuse to answer for their empty work calendars following FOI request

Each B.C. NDP MLA who reported empty work calendars or didn’t comply with B.C. Conservative Freedom of Information requests at all have refused to answer media requests to explain themselves.

The majority of Premier David Eby’s new NDP cabinet ministers reported no work, nothing to report or didn’t even bother filing anything for November, 2024 following the NDP’s narrow victory in October.

The NDP MLAs voted to give themselves a pay raise in the last year, with ministers receiving $60,000 on top of their $120,000 base salary. Ministers of State were given a $42,000 top-up, and parliamentary secretaries enjoyed $18,000 on top of their base salary.

Peter Milobar, the B.C. Conservative finance critic, told True North in an interview that he worries that by not revealing their calendars NDP members may have either gone on an early holiday – despite Christmas being around the corner – or had meetings with lobbyists that they did not disclose.

The list of unresponsive MLAs that True North contacted about their empty schedules will be included at the end of the article.

Ministers, ministers of state and parliamentary secretaries are required to release their work calendars in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act within 45 days of the month in question.

“The requirements are for a minister or Parliamentary Secretary to provide their calendars,” Milobar said. “I mean, we’re not talking overly confidential and sensitive information here”

Officers seize eight kilos of fentanyl during Saskatchewan traffic stop: “potentially millions of doses”

Officers from Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit (RTU) and the Province of Saskatchewan’s Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP) were doing proactive patrols in the Swift Current area when they uncovered and seized eight kilograms—”potentially millions of doses”—of fentanyl earlier this week.

As a result of that continued investigation, 26-year-old Swati Narula and 28-year-old Kunwardeep Singh, both from Calgary, are each charged with one count each of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The accused told investigators that they were travelling to Regina.

Both suspects appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on January 29.

“This is a significant fentanyl seizure. Keep in mind that only a few grains of fentanyl is enough to potentially cause a fatal overdose. We have prevented potentially millions of doses of this dangerous drug from entering our communities,” says Supt. Grant St. Germaine, in Charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “I hope this is a message to others who choose to transport illicit goods in our province. Our officers are watching out for you.”

The same RCMP Roving Traffic Unit, along with Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers, were doing proactive patrols and conducted a traffic stop on January 9, 2025.

As a result of that investigation, officers located and seized approximately 700 kg of illicit cannabis and a sum of cash from inside a large cargo van. An adult male was arrested and charged with trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

A Ukrainian military unit raped and killed eight women and murdered at least 14 other civilians in the village of Russkoye Porechnoye, a captured Ukrainian soldier has admitted during interrogation by Russian investigators.

Russkoye Porechnoye, home to around 300 people, fell under Kiev’s control in August last year during a Western-backed incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region. Russian forces liberated the settlement earlier this month, where they discovered decomposing corpses of civilians stashed in basements throughout the village.

On Friday, the Russian Investigative Committee released new evidence on the massacre, including footage of the interrogation of Yevgeny Fabrisenko, a soldier with the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade. Fabrisenko stated that he was deployed to the village on September 28 alongside his immediate commander and two other soldiers.

According to Fabrisenko, their company commander explicitly ordered them to “cleanse” the village of Russian civilians. The unit remained in Russkoye Porechnoye until October 3, during which they raided homes, raped women, and executed men on sight. Those who resisted were tortured and killed, he admitted. Continue…

The letter, drafted by former Crown prosecutor Scott Newark and addressed to Ottawa’s Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC), urged the body to reconsider explosive findings from a leaked RCMP and CSIS report detailing the infiltration of Canada’s “porous” borders by Chinese criminal networks.

Titled “Re: S.I.R.C. Review in relation to Project Sidewinder,” Newark’s letter alleges systemic failures that enabled Chinese State Council owned shipping giant COSCO and Triads with suspected Chinese military ties to penetrate Vancouver’s port system. He further asserts that federal authorities ignored repeated briefings and warnings from Canadian law enforcement—warnings based on intelligence gathered by Canadian officials in Hong Kong, who initiated the Sidewinder review.

Newark also warned that Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s decision to dismantle Canada’s specialized Ports Police and privatize national port control had left the country dangerously exposed to foreign criminal networks, noting he had personally briefed the Canadian government on these concerns as early as 1996.

BREAKING: Court postpones feds' order to cull 400 ostriches on BC farm

The court said it will issue a definitive ruling once it hears the judicial review.

A family farm in British Columbia will not have to kill 400 of its ostriches — as least not yet — a court has ruled.

Justice Michael Battista sided with the farm, postponing a final decision on the cull until after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducts a full review of its initial order, which would have required the birds to be slaughtered by February 1.

The farm's legal advocate, Kari Simpson, told the Western Standard she expects to be back in court within 40 days.
