A whistleblower asserted that Visa and Mastercard failed to prevent the laundering of funds related to child sexual abuse material and sex trafficking on the pornography website OnlyFans.

Reuters reported on Friday that the whistleblower, who works as a “senior compliance expert in the credit card and banking industries,” submitted a complaint in January 2023 with the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, also known as FinCEN.

That report was previously undisclosed.

The whistleblower asserted that the two credit card behemoths were aware that users were paying for illegal content on OnlyFans since 2021 or earlier.

He accused them of “turning a blind eye to flows of illicit revenue.”

Today, SecondStreet.org released government data showing an additional 15,474 patients in Canada died in 2023-24 before receiving various surgeries or diagnostic scans. However, that number is incomplete, as several governments provide either partial data, or simply do not track the problem.

SecondStreet.org collected the data by filing Freedom of Information (FOI) requests across Canada. When the data collected is extrapolated across jurisdictions which did not provide data, the number actually nearly doubles, to around 28,077. These figures cover everything from cancer treatment and heart operations to cataract surgery and MRI scans.

“Canadians pay really high taxes and yet our health care system is failing when compared to better-performing universal systems in Europe,” said Harrison Fleming, Legislative and Policy Director at SecondStreet.org. “Thousands of Canadians across the country find themselves on waitlists — in some cases for several years -— with too many tragically dying before ever getting treated, or even diagnosed.”

Experts have indicated that this abrupt cessation is unexpected and will hinder efforts to investigate and mitigate outbreaks of the Marburg virus and mpox in Africa, in addition to addressing emerging global health threats.

This policy shift coincides with global health authorities monitoring bird flu outbreaks among livestock in the United States.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of Nkengasong’s memorandum, which specified that the cessation of work applies to “all CDC staff engaging with WHO through technical working groups, coordinating centers, advisory boards, cooperative agreements, or other means—whether in person or virtual.”

The Canada Border Services Agency is refusing to honour U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to pardon those involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot in Washington D.C.

An Indiana man detained in a Surrey, B.C. immigration detention centre may soon be free to return following U.S. President Trump’s executive order to pardon all those involved in storming the Capitol building in Washington in 2021.

Antony Vo, 32, fled to Canada to make an asylum claim to avoid sentencing after being convicted of four non-violent misdemeanours that occurred during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot.

“It has been a long fight for my client but I am happy he has been pardoned in the USA so he will likely drop his claim and return to the USA,” Vo’s U.S. lawyer Damilo Ausni told True North.

The CBSA attempted to intervene in the matter by sending a letter to the Immigration Refugee Board last week prior to Vo’s hearing to state that he was “not on the list of individuals pardoned by the US President.”

Along with specific individuals pardoned by name in the executive order, Trump also granted “a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all other individuals convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.”

Vo’s legal representation in Canada, Robert Tibbo, told the National Post that his client’s counsel in the U.S. all indicate that “yes, 100%, he’s been pardoned.”

According to Tibbo, the agency wants “an Immigration Department adjudicator to rule him inadmissible so that they don’t have to screen his refugee claim” to begin the process of removing him from Canada.

Regardless of what happens to Vo, his presence in the country has further spurred on the mounting U.S.-Canada border security concerns, raising questions about how someone wanted as a fugitive in the U.S. could so easily gain entry. Continue…

The amount of time spent complying with regulations and the cost of red tape comes with an astronomical price for Canadian businesses.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business began its 16th annual Red Tape Awareness Week on Monday by issuing the seventh edition of the Red Tape Report – a study that measures the financial impact of government regulation.

The report highlighted that time spent on red tape has increased by 35% since 2020 for small businesses, rising from 189 hours in 2020 to 256 in 2024. Red tape accounted for 35% of the 256 hours small businesses spent on regulatory compliance. The report separated regulations into two categories: justified regulation and excessive regulation, or red tape.

The federation said that justified regulations add real value to businesses with social benefits that outweigh the costs. Conversely, red tape encompasses excessive government regulations.

Canadian businesses faced compliance costs totalling $51.5 billion in 2024, up 13.5% from $45.4 billion in 2020. Of this total, $17.9 billion was attributed to red tape, or 35%, a 41% rise from $12.7 billion in 2020.

“Higher wages and professional fees, along with an increase in time spent on compliance, are driving the rise in costs,” said the federation in its press release.

The federation said eliminating red tape would free up 268 million hours for business owners, which is equivalent to almost 137,000 full-time jobs. Continue…

NDP MP Charlie Angus is spending an increasing amount of his time voicing his anger at American billionaire Elon Musk, calling for Musk to be investigated and accusing him of being antisemitic.

Angus, a prominent member of the NDP caucus, sent a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Stéphane Perrault to request that Elections Canada investigate X and Elon Musk for alleged interference in Canada’s electoral process.

“I am writing to you regarding growing concerns about potential interference in the next federal election by American oligarch Elon Musk and his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which he owns,” wrote Angus.

Angus says that Musk has been throwing around his influence by endorsing right-wing and what he calls “fascist” political leaders across the world and accused Musk of rigging X’s algorithm to support those he endorses.

“Mr. Musk spent over $390 million to support a myriad of conservative candidates, nearly five times more than the $83 million spent by all Canadian political parties combined in the 2021 federal election, all while using his social media platform to amplify his candidates’ political messages,” said Angus.

“We have already seen how the platform X serves as a pathway for Russian misinformation and the rise of hate and threats in Canada. Given X’s huge power, any overt efforts by Mr. Musk to support a particular party or leader could easily impact our electoral integrity.”

Angus ends his letter by calling on Perrault to investigate X’s algorithm and how Musk and “right-wing influencers” can manipulate the next federal election.

While Musk currently supports Trump and the Republican party, he was previously an exclusive supporter of the Democrats, especially on environmental issues.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is calling-out the alleged sexual assault of four women by a trans-man in an Edmonton women's shelter.

On Friday, the Edmonton Police Service announced the arrest of Mika Katz on charges stemming from sexual assault allegations. The investigation began in August 2024 when women reported being victimized by Katz.

"What are four vulnerable women compared to the self-righteous rush it gave those who let the sexual predator inside a supposed safe place?" wrote Rowling on X.

Following the allegations, Katz was taken into custody and charged with sexual assault.

He was released under strict conditions, including a no-contact order with the alleged victims, a prohibition on possessing any weapons, firearms, or ammunition, and a requirement to stay at least 50 meters away from any women's shelter in Alberta.

Police said there could be more victims and are asking them to come forward.

Reduxx found a number of social media accounts believed to belong to Katz, including one where he claims to have begun hormone therapy.

"Katz identifies himself using “she/her/they/them” pronouns, and utilizes a “transgender pride” banner across several of his Facebook accounts," wrote Reduxx.

“The department is ready to flow funds,” stated a 2021 email from Crown-Indigenous Relations staff. “Timelines are for Tk’emlúps to determine. Needs can shift even if they haven’t figured everything out and the conversation is ongoing. There is no deadline.”

In May 2021, Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc announced the discovery of 215 "children’s graves" at the former Residential School. The figure was later revised to 200 “potential burials.”

Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue, who was selected to head the Foreign Interference Commission, released her final report on Tuesday following 18 months of work. This report follows a preliminary report published in May 2024.

The initial report concluded that foreign governments attempted to influence Canadian candidates and voters during elections but that the validity of the 2019 and 2021 elections was not in question. Hogue said that the Commission’s work since tabling the initial report has done nothing but reinforce these initial conclusions.

Speaking at a press conference following the report’s release, Hogue said that while the outcomes of the two previous elections were not affected by foreign interference, there is a possibility that some ridings were affected in a small way during the riding’s nomination contests and general elections.

“I have no evidence to suggest that anyone acted in bad faith,” reads the report. “The shortcomings observed appear to have been systemic ones, the consequences of which were exacerbated by various external factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which required a significant reorganization of work.”

A previous parliamentary report highlighted that some elected Canadian officials were either wittingly or unwittingly assisting foreign state actors to engage in political interference, most notably on behalf of China and India. Police investigate shots fired in Surrey, B.C.’s Newton neighbourhood

The Surrey Police Service and an RCMP support unit are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, Jan. 26 in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey, B.C.

Police say officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire and a vehicle speeding away in the area of 142 Street and 72 Avenue shortly after 3 a.m. Upon arrival, they found evidence that a home had been targeted.

True North asked SPS Sgt. Lindsey Houghton if he’d noticed any trends regarding gun violence in the Newton neighbourhood specifically, Sgt. Houghton responded that “calls for shots fired aren’t rare in Newton.”

He also added in an interview with True North, however, that this was “only the second shooting in all of Surrey” year-to-date—as compared to five shootings reported to police in Surrey by Feb 5 last year.

While the overall trend is downward across Surrey, both of the reports of shots fired in 2025, Houghton added, took place in the Newton neighbourhood.

The shooting comes at an interesting time, only a few months into Surrey’s transition towards a municipal policing service—a transition Houghton described as “one of the largest policing projects” he’s witnessed in 17 years of policing service.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, but videos showing property damage caused by the gunshots were shared and viewed widely on X (formerly Twitter).

Witnesses in the area reported seeing a light-coloured sedan take off after the shooting.

Foreign interference inquiry calls for government agency to monitor online misinformation

The commission that probed foreign interference in Canadian elections says the government should create an agency to monitor the internet for “misinformation and disinformation.”

Mary-Josee Hogue, the commissioner of the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, released her final report Tuesday, concluding that no parliamentarians “acted in bad faith.”

Among the 51 recommendations was for the government to establish a federal watchdog for foreign disinformation campaigns on social media.

“The government should consider creating a government entity to monitor the domestic open-source online information environment for misinformation and disinformation that could impact Canadian democratic processes,” Hogue said in the report.

The proposed entity would work with national security and intelligence agencies, international partners and “appropriate civil society and private organizations.”

“The entity should be structured to comply with applicable law and should have the authority to give and receive intelligence and information. Giving the entity authority to interact with social media platforms should also be considered.”

However, the report did not define Hogue’s meaning by giving the entity authority to “interact with” social media platforms. Continue…

Lt.-Gov. grants Ford request to trigger early Ontario election

An early Ontario election has officially been called by Premier Doug Ford following his meeting with the province’s Lieutenant-Governor, which is now scheduled for Feb. 27.

Lt.-Gov. Edith Dumont granted Ford’s request to dissolve the 43rd Ontario provincial parliament after the two spoke in her office Tuesday.

Ahead of their meeting Ford told reporters that he required a new mandate from the electorate regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.

“Right now, President Trump has put uncertainty to every single Canadian, a lot of other countries around the world, and this isn’t going to happen overnight,” Ford told reporters on Tuesday.

“It may not happen Feb. 1 — I’m sure something’s coming — but this is going to be a battle for the next four years, and I want to make sure that I have a strong mandate to outlast President Trump.”

Ford said he intends to continue carrying out his duties as premier until the election, such as travelling to Washington, D.C. next month along with the other premiers, while also campaigning in Ontario. Continue…
