Ukraine's Most Vital Port City Rocked By Russian Missile Attack

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/ukraines-most-vital-port-city-rocked-russian-missile-attack

The key and strategic southern port city of Odessa has throughout the nearly three-year long war with Russia remained in Ukrainian hands. This has been one of the country's sole large shipping lifelines on the Black Sea and to the outside world.

This means that if Russia ever sought to besiege or take the city and its vital large port, the proverbial writing would immediately be on the wall for Kiev, as it would face devastating economic blockade. Throughout the conflict, Moscow has sporadically attacked Odessa, apparently reserving such strikes as severe punishment in response to growing missile and drone attacks on Russian territory.

This has happened again Friday evening, as a large Russian missile attack hit the center of the southern Ukrainian city, wounding at least seven people. Several historic buildings at the city center were also damaged. Such large-scale attacks on Odessa remain rare. Continue…

ANALYSIS: Manitoba is regulating machetes, could national knife control be next?

https://tnc.news/2025/02/02/shawn-taylor-manitoba-regulating-machetes/

Chief Angela Levasseur of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in remote northern Manitoba has a big knife problem. Machetes — foot-long, bush knives popular with campers and farmers — have become the weapon of choice for young gang members terrorizing her 3,500-member reserve.

“Over the last two years we have seen a really high level of machete crimes committed by youth and on youth in our community,” she said from Nelson House, 850 km northwest of Winnipeg. “It’s just too easy for anyone to possess a machete.” That’s now changing.

Due in part to Levasseur’s lobbying, Manitoba recently passed Canada’s first machete law. The Long-Bladed Weapon Control Act regulates the sale of any knife longer than 30 cm. Since the beginning of the new year, sales are now restricted to people 18 years and older, purchasers must show photo ID and retailers must track sales.

Based on the demands of advocates such as Levasseur, this may only be the beginning of new knife control measures in Canada — all troublingly modeled on our long and fruitless attempt at controlling guns.

The province claims its new law will keep big knives out of the hands of young criminals. That seems unlikely. Once the act takes effect, it will still be legal for an 18-year-old to buy an arm-full of machetes and hand them out to fellow gang members. Tougher measures require changes to the federal Criminal Code. Continue…

Chrystia Freeland wants to target Elon Musk’s Tesla with tariffs

https://tnc.news/2025/02/02/freeland-target-tesla-tariffs/

Liberal leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland is suggesting that she would hit Elon Musk’s Tesla with a 100% tariff if elected to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Freeland said the measure would come as part of a package of select tariffs that the former finance minister says are targeted at sending a message to President Donald Trump and his powerful supporters.

In an interview with the Canadian Press, Freeland suggested Canada implement a 100% tariff on all wine, beer and spirits coming from the United States, as well as an equally harsh tariff on the import of all Tesla vehicles.

“We need to be very targeted, very surgical, very precise,” said Freeland.

“We need to look through and say who is supporting Trump and how can we make them pay a price for a tariff attack on Canada.”

Freeland’s attack on Musk comes after the former finance minister launched her campaign on an anti-Trump message, promising to counterpunch against the Trump administration. Continue…

‘Very Dangerous’ — Zelensky Warns Trump Against Unilateral Talks with Putin

https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2025/02/02/very-dangerous-zelensky-warns-trump-against-unilateral-talks-with-putin/

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that excluding his country from talks between the U.S. and Russia about the war in Ukraine would be “very dangerous” and asked for more discussions between Kyiv and Washington to develop a plan for a ceasefire.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Zelenskyy said Russia does not want to engage in ceasefire talks or to discuss any kind of concessions, which the Kremlin interprets as losing at a time when its troops have the upper hand on the battlefield.

He said U.S. President Donald Trump could bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the table with the threat of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and banking system, as well as continued support of the Ukrainian military.

“I think these are the closest and most important steps,” he said in the interview in the Ukrainian capital that lasted for more than an hour.

Zelenskyy’s remarks followed comments Friday by Trump, who said American and Russian officials were “already talking” about ending the war. Trump said his administration has had “very serious” discussions with Russia, but he did not elaborate.

“They may have their own relations, but talking about Ukraine without us – it is dangerous for everyone,” Zelenskyy said. Continue…

Trump renews call for Canada to join US

https://www.rt.com/news/612062-trump-canada-join-us/

The American president cited trade benefits and military protection that Ottawa would receive amid an escalating tariff dispute between the two countries

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his proposal for Canada to become the 51st state of the US, promising that such a move would lead to “no tariffs” and “much lower taxes” for Canadians. Ottawa previously firmly rejected the idea, emphasizing the country’s commitment to national sovereignty.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, Trump stated: “We pay hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada. Why? There is no reason.” He further suggested that without US support, its northern neighbor would struggle to remain viable and proposed statehood as a solution, promising “much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada – and no tariffs!” Continue…

Israel demolishes dozens of buildings in West Bank (VIDEO)

https://www.rt.com/news/612064-israel-demolish-buildings-west-bank/

The operation has resulted in a massive forced displacement, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA

The Israel Defense Force (IDF) demolished dozens of buildings in the city of Jenin in the north of the West Bank on Sunday. Videos that have surfaced on social media show the structures being destroyed by a series of powerful explosions.

The move is part of a “counterterrorist operation” launched by West Jerusalem nearly two weeks ago. According to the Jerusalem Post, the destruction of the buildings was ordered by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who has reportedly demanded that any building linked to “terrorist activity” be obliterated.

According to the WAFA news agency, which is linked to the Palestinian Authority, the demolished structures were mostly multistory residential buildings. “A large number of families” have been displaced, the media outlet claimed. The blasts that rocked the area also damaged a local hospital, its director, Wisam Baker, told the agency, adding that no casualties had been reported in the wake of the demolitions.

Videos that surfaced on social media showed a series explosions rocking what appears to be a single neighborhood in Jenin, with plumes of smoke and dust rising in the air as powerful blasts rock the area. Continue…

LCBO to stop selling US liquor in response to Trump tariffs

https://thepostmillennial.com/lcbo-to-stop-selling-us-liquor-in-response-to-trump-tariffs

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) will remove all US-made liquor from its shelves starting Tuesday, following US President Donald Trump’s implementation of steep tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ford emphasized the economic impact of the decision in a post on X, writing, “Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, sprits and seltzers. Not anymore.”

He added, “Starting Tuesday, we’re removing American products from LCBO shelves. As the only wholesaler of alcohol in the province, LCBO will also remove American products from its catalogue so other Ontario-based restaurants and retailers can’t order or restock U.S. products.” Continue…
