Canada’s main money laundering watchdog suspects online betting platforms and cryptocurrencies are being used to launder money generated by fentanyl production and distribution.

The Jan. 25 report titled “Operation Alert,” published by the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), reveals how criminal organizations exploit the financial system to move proceeds from the deadly opioid trade, using online gaming apps and cryptocurrency transactions, as well as more traditional methods such as shell companies and international wire transfers.

With fentanyl-related overdoses continuing to rise, FINTRAC’s findings underscore the urgent need for collaboration between financial institutions, law enforcement, and policymakers to combat the growing threat of illicit drug financing.

According to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an independent inter-governmental body that promotes policies to protect the global financial system against money laundering: “the trafficking of fentanyl is fuelling an overdose epidemic and claiming around 80,000 lives a year.”

FINTRAC analyzed a sample of approximately 5,000 “suspicious transaction reports related to fentanyl and synthetic opioids that were filed between 2020 and 2023” as part of its reporting.

The timing of the report, released on January 25, is notable, coming mere days after the inauguration of President Donald Trump and his stern warning to Canada and Mexico to curb the cross-border flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into the United States. The warning came with the threat of 25-per-cent tariffs on Canada’s exports.

Canada has long faced criticism, both domestically and internationally, for its perceived leniency on issues such as money laundering in real estate and its failure to adequately enforce existing financial regulations.

One of Trump’s first executive orders following his inauguration last week froze most of the funding provided by Washington to other countries for three months pending a comprehensive spending review.

USAID, the organization that promotes American interests abroad through so-called humanitarian development that spent over $60 billion in 2023 alone, has been significantly impacted.

Stella Lapina, chair of the board of the National Rehabilitation Center Vaivari, told La.lv news outlet on Tuesday that “due to the order that has led to the suspension of US foreign assistance programs for 90 days, we are temporarily restricting the training of Ukrainian specialists.”

The US-funded program had been underway at Vaivari in the resort city of Jurmala since 2014, when the fighting in Donbass began, allowing 187 Ukrainian doctors to improve their skills in rehabilitating injured troops, according to the center.

This month’s deadly and destructive Los Angeles fires that claimed 28 lives burned with such intensity that electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries melted to the ground, creating hazardous conditions as residents began returning to their communities Jan. 28.

Specialists with the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were leading the large-scale cleanup of the batteries Tuesday.

The Palisades Fire burned more than 36 square miles and tore through neighborhoods full of electric vehicles and solar panels after years of state-sponsored green-energy policies.

The size of the Palisades fire and number of lithium-ion batteries left behind make it one of the largest hazardous-materials cleanups that local first responders have seen, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Adam VanGerpen.

“We’ve never seen it on this scale,” VanGerpen told The Epoch Times. “We are talking a very large scale.”

Lithium-ion batteries are used in cellphones, tablets, laptops, wireless headphones, electric cars, and solar panel storage.

Many of the batteries and electric vehicles melted after they were abandoned by fleeing residents starting Jan. 7, VanGerpen said.

“We have to remove the entire vehicle,” he added.

Actor and Pacific Palisades homeowner James Woods said in a post on social media platform X Monday that the melted electric cars were “creating a real problem for safe debris removal.”

Canadian police and border officials said they intercepted a “human smuggling attempt” when they apprehended a man jumping off a moving train in the Niagara region while attempting an illegal border crossing.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the RCMP revealed the attempt – which occurred in December – was stopped as part of the newly-launched “Project Disrupt and Deter.”

The CBSA wrote in a statement released this morning that the project is “an intelligence initiative aimed at monitoring vulnerable areas along the International Railway Bridge in the Niagara region [that] focuses on gathering intelligence related to irregular migration and disrupting organized human smuggling operations.”

According to authorities, the man leapt from a freight train as it crossed into Canada at Fort Erie, Ont. and attempted to flee.

Two other individuals involved in the smuggling attempt were located nearby and taken into custody for questioning.

The CBSA said the jumper was subsequently arrested and sent back to the U.S. under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. No additional information was provided about the status of the two others believed to be involved in the smuggling attempt.

Michael Prosia, a Regional Director General for the CBSA said, “Through this joint CBSA and RCMP investigation, we stopped human smuggling between Niagara and Fort Erie. Together, our frontline border services officers and regional Intelligence and Enforcement Operations Division work with the RCMP to detect and remove individuals who pose threats to public safety and secure the border with the United States.”

The statement comes at a critical time, with Donald Trump threatening to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods as early as Feb. 1 if Canada fails to improve border security.

“Sellout Jagmeet Singh said that Trudeau was ‘too weak, too selfish and too beholden to corporate interests to fight for people,’” a Conservative news release said. “Despite claiming he had ripped up his deal with the Liberals in September, he voted to prop them up 8 times over the fall to keep Liberals in power until he gets his $2.3 million taxpayer-funded pension on February 25th.”

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimated that if Singh took his pension early at age 55 and lived until he was 90, his total retirement would cost taxpayers $2.3 million.

“Sellout Jagmeet Singh is now looking for any opportunity to prop up the Liberals and Carbon Tax Carney to keep them in power longer and lock in his multi-million dollar pension,” the Conservative news release said. “He simply doesn’t care about the Canadians lined up at food banks or unable to find housing. A 21-year-old hitman who admitted to the 2022 murder of Air India bombing suspect Ripudaman Singh Malik has been sentenced to life in prison. The B.C. Supreme Court handed down the sentence Tuesday.

Tanner Fox was told by the New Westminster court he has no chance of parole for 25 years.

Fox, who entered the guilty plea last year in connection to the July 2022 murder of Malik, appeared in court alongside his defence team on Tuesday where he apologized for his actions.

“I know nothing I say will bring him back and I’m sorry for the role I played in this crime. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel remorse for my actions,” said Fox. “I’ve grown to see the error of my ways, and I’m sorry for all the hurt and pain I’ve caused.”

When given the same questions, ChatGPT provided detailed answers including both sides of any given argument, while DeepSeek provided brief answers reminiscent of the CCP’s state-controlled media reports. It outright refused to answer questions about human rights.

The China-trained AI model also evaded questions on topics deemed sensitive by the CCP, including “What’s The Epoch Times?”

For years, the CCP has censored and attacked The Epoch Times as it frequently reports on the regime’s extensive human rights abuses.

This has raised doubts about the reasoning behind some U.S. tech companies’ decision to pledge billions of dollars in AI investment, and shares of several big tech players, including Nvidia, have been affected.

Surrey shooting leads to charges, including attempted murder

A 21-year-old man from Squamish, B.C. has been charged following a shooting incident in the Surrey neighbourhood of Newton that injured two people on Dec. 16.

Surrey RCMP responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 6 p.m. on that date in the 12600 block of 67B Avenue.

A woman reported to the police that she and her husband had been shot while walking outside their vehicle. The two victims were taken to the hospital to be treated for their wounds. Officers also discovered that their young child was in a nearby vehicle, who was found unharmed.

“Two suspects, described as adult South Asian men, were last seen driving away in a dark-coloured sedan,” said Surrey Police Services on the incident in a December news release, sent out shortly after the incident. Police have not provided information on the second suspect.

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, Surrey Police announced that Gagandeep Singh Bakshi was in custody as a suspect. Bakshi was arrested two weeks earlier on Jan. 15, nearly a month after the shooting. He was charged on Jan. 16 with one count each of attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent, and aggravated assault, along with two counts of assault with a weapon.

According to the release, a collaborative Serious Crime Unit between the newly formed Surrey Police Service and the RCMP led the investigation into the shooting, conducting police searches of homes in Squamish, Delta, and Surrey between Jan. 16 and 17.

These charges represent some of the first and highest-profile criminal charges laid by the newly formed Surrey Police Service. Since last November, they have been overseeing one of the largest policing transition projects in Canadian history, as noted in another True North article on a different shooting in the Newton neighbourhood.

Bakshi will stay behind bars until his next hearing set for Feb. 10 in Surrey Provincial Court.

New CBC CEO says defunding CBC would “cripple” state broadcaster

CBC/Radio-Canada’s new CEO, Marie-Philippe Bouchard, is warning that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s pledge to defund the state broadcaster is an “existential threat” to its survival that could “cripple” its programming in both official languages.

Bouchard said that if Poilievre were to slash $1 billion of the organization’s $1.4 billion annual government subsidy, the French services of CBC might not survive even if the English service was eliminated.

“The math just doesn’t work. There’s a serious risk that it would cripple not only the English service but also the French service,” said Bouchard. “So I’m just having difficulty reconciling all of that.”

Bouchard made the comments in an interview on CBC’s The Current. She said she hasn’t spoken to Poilievre yet but welcomes the opportunity.She added that CBC/Radio-Canada could make preparations to be defunded but that such a mandate change would require a parliamentary debate. However, she did say that defunding is an “existential threat” that would fundamentally change the corporation.

“Honestly, at this time, I wish I could reassure or give more detail, but it’s really not in my hands. So we can prepare all sorts of ways, but in the end, it depends on what the decision is,” said Bouchard.

The CBC previously dished out $18.4 million in bonuses for the 2023-24 fiscal year for “performance pay,” following hundreds of employees being laid off and eliminating vacant positions. The bonuses were given to 1,194 CBC/Radio-Canada employees, and $3.3 million of the total pot went to 45 executives, who received an average bonus of $73,000. Continue…
