FBI Director Christopher Wray, who is stepping down from his role just days before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, has issued a stark warning about the challenges facing U.S. national security. In a farewell op-ed published on Jan. 18, Wray identified the Chinese government as “the defining threat of our generation,” citing its expansive efforts to undermine American innovation and security.

Reflecting on his tenure, Wray highlighted the increasingly dangerous and complex nature of threats the U.S. faces, calling for unity and vigilance.

Escalating Threat Landscape

Wray wrote that adversaries—including cartels, hackers, and hostile nations—are now more technologically advanced and resourceful than ever. He noted that cyberattacks have the potential to disrupt critical infrastructure, while encrypted communication tools enable terrorists to plot undetected.

“The Chinese government, in particular, has engineered an unprecedented effort to gut American innovation, steal our most precious personal data, and meddle in our free and open society,” Wray wrote, adding that history will mark this as a defining challenge.

He also pointed to rising threats of terrorism, both foreign and domestic, inspired by events such as the Hamas terror attack on Israel in October 2024.

FBI’s Recent Efforts

Wray praised the FBI’s achievements during his tenure, including the daily arrests of violent criminals, rescuing hundreds of children from predators, and dismantling drug trafficking networks. The agency has seized enough fentanyl to kill tens of millions and thwarted numerous terrorist plots, he said.

Despite these accomplishments, Wray cautioned that complacency and political distractions could hinder progress.

“Our focus must be on the threats and our work, rather than on what divides us,” he wrote.

Leadership Transition

Wray’s resignation follows President-elect Trump’s announcement of a leadership change at the FBI. Trump has nominated Kash Patel to take over as FBI Director, praising Patel as a “brilliant lawyer” and an “America First” advocate.

Patel, who has been a prominent figure in investigations into government misconduct, is expected to bring a new approach to the agency. Trump expressed confidence in Patel’s ability to lead the FBI in addressing pressing security concerns.

Wray’s departure marks the end of more than seven years of service as FBI Director. He leaves with a call for the nation to prioritize unity in addressing increasingly complex threats.
