(From video in link) How could a steam pipe explode so destructively with no warning?

"We had no reports"

"But, there were several permits pulled to do work in this area. One is for regrading hardware on 21st St and 5th ave (regrade struct tm 2711) . And another one to place steam stacks to vent vapor on 5th avenue between 22nd and 23rd. Despite these permits a Con-Ed spokesperson said "no work was being done at the time of the explosion."

exactly one month ago to the day:

Meanwhile, service changes and delays also plagued the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 lines Thursday morning after a train’s brakes were activated at Brooklyn’s Franklin Avenue stop. The MTA said it was investigating why the brakes were triggered.

A train’s brakes were also automatically activated at Times Square-42nd Street, causing Hudson Yards-bound 7 trains to end service at Times Square-42nd Street, Hunters Point Avenue and Queensboro Plaza.

For service between Manhattan and Queens, the MTA advised that commuters should consider taking the E or M trains from Court Square or the N or W trains from Queensboro Plaza.

indeed. the old New Yorker isn't all that far itself, they've had a labryinth of underground tunnels around that whole area going back to Tesla's days. John G. Trump must have known EXACTLY what was going on down there.
