โWell, you know, I've had pardon authority. I've been a governor. It's something that I always took very seriously and only used on a limited basis.
I always thought that it's important that there be contrition for people that are applying for a pardon. You know, for people that were caught up in that moment and did no violence but found themselves swept into the Capitol, I can appreciate the sensitivity to those people, and I'm sure there were many. But for the more than 400 individuals, many of whom pled guilty to assaulting police officers, I would hope the president would think better of that.
You know, the respect for law enforcement and to a lesser extent, just the respect for our seat of government in the United States Capitol is something we ought to reaffirm. And so I hope the president would not pardon anyone who engaged in violence against police officers or vandalized the US. Capitol.
But again, I would have a generous attitude toward people that may have been caught up in the moment but engaged in more violence that day.
