Trump planning early China trip – WSJ

The incoming president wants to improve ties with Xi Jinping after threatening to slap harsh trade tariffs on Beijing, the report says

US President-elect DonaldTrump wants to visit China in his first 100 days in officeto improve relations with Xi Jinping, as the prospect of a new trade war looms, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday citing sources.

The trip would aim to deepen ties with the Chinese leader in the face of geopolitical tensions between the two countries fueled by the stand-off over the self-governed island of Taiwan and Trump’s promise to impose tariffs on Chinese imports. However, while people familiar with the matter told the paper that Trump has expressed a certain interest in going, no final decision has been made.

On Friday, Trump and Xi spoke on the phoneto discuss a range of issues including trade, Taiwan, and the situation with the Chinese-owned Tiktok social media platform, which went dark in the US over an imminent federal ban. It is unclear, however, whether the president-elect raised the idea of a China visit during the call. At the same time, the two delegated discussions about a potential in-person meeting to their aides, the WSJ said.

Besides China, Trump also expressed interest in a possible trip to India, the outlet’s sources said. However, it is saidhis immediate attention will gravitate to domestic issues, including the border crisis and wildfires in California.

During his first term, Trump traveled to Beijing in late 2017, more than nine months after taking office. The four years of the Trump administration have been marred by a tense stand-off with China, with the president-elect imposing tariffs on billions of dollars in Chinese goods. His administration also labeled China “a currency manipulator” and imposed tough restrictions on Chinese tech giants like Huawei and ZTE, citing national security risks.

During the election campaign, Trump proposed a 60% tariff on Chinese imports. Responding to a potential hike, Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen warned that the restrictions could backfire, forcing American consumers to pay higher prices. Meanwhile, he added, China would be able to weather the impact of such “external shocks.”

Super rich flock to Trump’s estate – Bloomberg

The president-elect’s private Palm Beach club has turned into “a new center of power,” the report says

The world’s top moguls have been flocking to Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida in the weeks before his inauguration, with many confirming meetings with the US president-elect, Bloomberg reported on Saturday.

According to JetSpy aviation data cited by the agency, six of the world’s ten richest people have flown to Florida since Trump’s election victory in November, with Bloomberg describing the president-elect’s private Palm Beach club as “a new center of power.”

While some of the high-profile visitors are longtime allies of Trump, others appear to be forging new ties with the man about to re-enter the White House, the article said.

Among them was Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Meta Platforms Inc. Zuckerberg’s jet landed at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) on November 26 and departed the next day, according to aviation data. Meta has confirmed the meeting, saying that Zuckerberg “was grateful for the invitation” to dinner and the opportunity to meet with members of Trump’s team.

Trump was temporarily banned from Meta platforms following the January 2021 Capitol riot. After Zuckerberg’s visit, the company announced plans to remove fact-checkers from its platforms, a move seen as addressing Trump’s criticisms.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also had a meeting with Trump in December at Mar-a-Lago, with his plane recorded in Florida for several hours. According to media reports, Amazon has since pledged $1 million for Trump’s inauguration and agreed to fund a $40 million documentary on Melania Trump.

Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft, flew into PBI in late December.Gates, who previously supported Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, confirmed the meeting, saying he had a three-hour dinner with Trump.

Elon Musk, owner of X and one of Trump’s closest allies, has been a frequent visitor to Mar-a-Lago. According to JetSpy,Musk’s planes have made more than a dozen trips to Palm Beachsince Election Day, with records showing a total of three weeks spent in the area.

Bill Gates unveils details of ‘intriguing’ dinner with Trump

The billionaire said he was “impressed” by the US president-elect’s interest in his healthcare innovation proposals

Billionaire Bill Gates has discussed how lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic could be used to “accelerate innovation” in addressing other global health challenges with US President-elect Donald Trump, according to an interview the Microsoft founder and vaccine advocate has given to the Wall Street Journal.

Gates described his recent three-hour dinner with Trump as “long and actually quite intriguing.” The meeting, which included incoming White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and one of Gates’ staffers, reportedly focused on how Trump could contribute to significant milestones, such as developing a cure for HIV and eradicating polio. (Oh please fuck off Gates, may you get the wrath of God through Trump!)

“He was fascinated to hear what he could do to maximize the chance that during the next four years that incredible milestone [eradication of polio] will be achieved,” Gates said in a clip published by the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Reflecting on Trump’s role during the Covid pandemic, Gates recalled how he had “accelerated the vaccine innovation,” and urged Trump to take a similar approachwith the HIV cure that the Gates Foundation is actively working on.

“So I was asking him if maybe the same kind of thing could be done here. And we both got, I think, pretty excited about that,” Gates remarked.

“I was frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues I brought up,”he added, noting that Trump appeared “energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation.”

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest non-state contributors to the World Health Organization (WHO), has been involved in a number of global health initiatives, supporting efforts to combat diseases such as malaria, HIV, and polio, alongside funding vaccine development and distribution programs.

Trump, who has held several meetings with prominent business and technology leaders in recent months, has yet to comment on the details of his discussions with Gates.

The meeting comes as Trump prepares to assume office again, potentially signaling major shifts in healthcare policy. Some reports suggested Trump may revisit his previous attempt to withdraw the US from the WHO. During his first term, Trump accused the organization of being overly influenced by China and criticized its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. While he initiated the withdrawal process in 2020, US President Joe Biden reestablished ties with the WHO on January 20, 2021.

Additionally, Trump has nominated vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next secretary of health and human services, though the appointment awaits Senate approval. RFK Jr. has been a vocal critic of Covid-19 response measures, such as lockdowns and rapid vaccine rollouts. He has also publicly criticized Gates, accusing him of leveraging “philanthro-capitalism” to gain influence over global health policies.

“He’s gotten control of the World Health Organization so that they mandate vaccines all over the world and the companies that make those vaccines are Gates’ and many of them the major shareholder,” RFK Jr. said in an interview regarding his 2021 book ‘The Real Anthony Fauci’.

(who else thinks Trump learned the lesson of "The Snake" and has turned it around?)

I cannot tell you how much I hate Gate' arrogance and his belief that he can deceive those in power, especially Trump.

These people really believe "the Trump play", that he's not very smart.

if they watched instead of listened to the idiots that hate him, they could avoid the pitfalls coming

German zoo executes healthy antelopes

The facility in Leipzig says it had to shoot the animals for population control reasons

The Leipzig Zoo has shot four of its lechwe antelopes, citing population control reasons, with no mention of health issues or old age. The carcasses were fed to other animals at the zoo.

The antelopes were put down on Friday morning with five “precision shots,” as confirmed by the zoo’s spokesperson. According to the facility, it had unsuccessfully tried to transfer the animals to another zoo via the Ex-situ Program – a population management and conservation scheme run by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

The Leipziger Volkszeitung reported, citing the zoo’s administration, that the decision was approved by a special ethics commission.

A similar case occurred in Australia’s Adelaide Zoo in October, where two lions were euthanized. A male named Mujambi was the first to go after suffering health issues, which the veterinary team was unable to treat. Soon thereafter, the zoo decided to put down Mujambi’s long-time partner, Amani, even though the lioness was not critically ill.

The facility explained that they chose to spare her the “negative impacts” of living alone. “Euthanasia was deemed to be in the best welfare outcome interests of Amani because of her strong bond with Mujambi,” it stated.

The zoo argued that “at 23 and 19, both lions were in the latter stages of their lives,” with director Phil Ainsley insisting that moving Amani and integrating her into another pride or environment “was considered too risky and stress provoking.”

The president and director of the Zoological Wildlife Foundation, Mario Tabraue, told 7NEWS that “there’s no logical reasoning or excuse for what was done here.” He suggested that the zoo could have at least tried to “find [the lioness] another mate or friend.”

In late 2022, staff at Sweden’s Furuvik Zoo shot and killed three chimpanzees, with one other left injured, after the animals escaped from their enclosure. The facility said at the time that the “fast, very strong and generally fearless” animals could “pose a threat to people’s lives.” A spokesperson added that the zoo did not have enough tranquilizers to handle the situation more humanely.

(Why not let them go into the wilderness? At least they die naturally.)
