JUST IN: Deputies in Cochise Co., Ariz. seize 10,000 rounds of .50 BMG ammo and nearly 20,000 AK-47 rounds, stuffed into vehicles and transported by 'asylum seekers'. The sheriff's office tells @FOX10Phoenix

ATF and Homeland Security are now leading the investigation.

Still a lot of unanswered questions here. For those who don't shoot, .50 BMG rounds are quite pricey. These 200-round boxes go for roughly $770. That adds up to $38,500 just for the .50 cal rounds. Not your average buy at the local sporting goods store…

"A migrant admitted to the United States under a non-immigrant visa is prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving, or possessing a firearm or ammunition unless the migrant falls within one of the exceptions provided in 18 U.S.C. § 922(y)(2)."

We've requested that information from ATF/HSI. I'll post an update as soon as we get it.

The Cochise Co. Sheriff's Office, Pinal Co. Sheriff's Office, ATF and Homeland Security would beg to differ. One suspect is an "asylum seeker out of Cuba", while two others are from destinations unknown. The fourth suspect is a U.S. citizen from Texas.

The .50 BMG is roughly $38,500 with the same brand 200-round boxes for 10k rounds.
