Magic just showed its first product to investors on Monday — now it may be worth $40 million

Magic — the service that lets you text a number and get "anything you want as long as it's not illegal" — is raising $12 million from Sequoia Capital at a $40 million valuation, just a few days after graduating from the Y Combinator startup accelerator program, reports TechCrunch.

And the way Magic works is very simple: Text the official number with whatever you want, and they get it to you. Maybe your order is filled by Seamless or Postmates or another delivery company entirely, but you don't care. They give you a price (plus a markup), and if you agree, they deliver what you ordered, from pizzas to groceries to party supplies to liquor, like magic (get it).

MOD Pizza snags $40 million for plan to go national

Fast-casual pizza chain MOD Pizza says it has closed a funding round of more than $40 million as it seeks to expand well beyond its Northwestern base and become a national brand.

That comes in handy for a young firm that’s pursuing national brand status in a sector that’s quickly getting crowded with equally ambitious, fast-casual pizza parlors. Rivals include Pie Five Pizza Company, PizzaRev and Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza.

The lead investor was PWP Growth Equity, a private equity fund run by Perella Weinberg Partners.

MOD has 32 stores in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Arizona and Texas.

It plans to double that number by the end of June and reach the 100th store mark by the end of the year as it signs franchisees.

Stores are expected to pop up in Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington, D.C.

Americans love pizza. In fact, we spend $37 billion a year on the sauce-and-cheese-topped flatbread, accounting for a third of the global market, according to the USDA.

More than 40 million Americans eat pizza on any given day, and today, one in six males between the ages of 2 and 39 will eat pizza for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Although we didn't invent pizza, Americans consume more of it than any other country.

Forty million girls do not just go missing, though in India that is the case.

ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas traveled to the country to uncover what is known as India's deadly secret. Vargas went on shocking information that one million girls are systematically killed every year because of the gender preference for boys, a term coined gendercide.

As Vargas walks, the streets are teeming with males. Women appear to be absent. The reporter is struck by the visible disparity. But this is not something uncommon. There is even a town called The Village of No Women which has one of the lowest sex ratios on earth. So, where are the females?

An estimated 40 million girls have gone missing in India, which has a total population of 1.1 billion as of 2010. Approximately 50,000 female fetuses are aborted every month.

Pregnant women visit ultrasound clinics, which are booming businesses in the country, to determine the sex of their babies before they are born. In India, it is reportedly a crime to use an ultrasound to find out whether the child is a male or female. Abortions are also illegal.

Regardless, the judiciary and authorities do not acknowledge the illegality because they believe in the same mentality. Thus, the culprits are rarely charged.

Since 1980, Vargas reports that an estimated 40 million girls are missing due to sex-selective abortion, neglect or murder.
