Trump names acting defense secretary with Hegseth not yet confirmed

President Trump has named an acting defense secretary because his choice to lead the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, has not yet been confirmed by the Senate.

Robert Salesses, deputy director of the Pentagon’s Washington Headquarters Service, will fill in as acting secretary of defense, two officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an announcement that was not yet public.

To serve in the post, the incoming Trump administration needed a senior executive at the Pentagon who has already been confirmed by the Senate. Mr. Salesses is a retired Marine who served in the Gulf War and earned a Bronze Star.

Billionaire Elon Musk gave what appeared to be a fascist salute Monday while making a speech at the post-inauguration celebration for President Donald Trump at the Capital One Arena.

“Some elections are important, some are not. But this one, this one really mattered and I just want to say thank you for making it happen,” Musk said before putting his hand on his chest and then raising it in a salute that appeared similar to the “Sieg Heil” used by Nazis at their victory rallies.

“It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured," Musk said.

Trump named Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the "Department of Government Efficiency," an outside commission aimed at identifying federal programs and spending to cut. After Trump was sworn in, multiple lawsuits were filed against the Trump administration claiming that the move violates federal transparency laws.
