Anyone been in an urban Costco lately?
NYC has only one Costco in Manhattan, up in Harlem 117th Street.
Around 15 years ago, Anon had a membership there. Costco was famous for their free food samples. The sample stations are staffed by a different company who has a contract with Costco to demo and sample products.
Back then all the sample workers were white and super friendly, and gladly offered you as many samples as you wanted.
2024 - Anon strolled into the Costco to see if it was worth joining again.
All the sample station workers were Black and much older, like in their late 50's and 60's. They were all sullen, slow and unfriendly.
There was one White young sample giver, who was enthusiastic about sampling.
At one older Black sample workers station, her sample was of Coconut Shrimp, but none were out. Anon and other Costco shoppers hung around waiting, and waiting, the worker just sat there and did nothing.
Anon waited and waited in front of her stand, and finally she pulled a shrimp out of the small metal oven, which means the shrimp had been in there ALL ALONG, ready to put out as samples.
She pushed it towards me.
Immediately, several other shoppers came over, but they just stood there, no shrimp.
After 5 minutes of waiting, they drifted away.
The shrimp was pretty good, so I picked up the empty box on top of the stand to check the ingredients.
The sullen worker in a hostile voice said "I don't know why you're touching my stuff!"
I did not renew my Costco membership.
