AFP probes sighting of alleged submersible drone in Bohol
22 Jan 2025, 06:37
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said it is investigating the reported sighting of another supposed submersible drone spotted floating in the waters of Bohol province last week.
AFP Public Affairs Office Chief, Col. Xerxes Trinidad, stressed that all appropriate military units and forces, particularly the Naval Forces Central, are “actively coordinating and working together to gather details and ascertain the nature of this incident.”
“The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), through the Visayas Command, has prioritized the investigation into the reported discovery of unidentified equipment floating at sea,” Trinidad said in a statement on Wednesday.
Trinidad called on residents in the area to help the AFP locate the whereabouts of the alleged underwater drone or glider.
“At this time, the AFP does not have the equipment in its possession for conducting a forensic investigation,” he said.
“We urge the individual who discovered the equipment and posted it on social media to immediately coordinate with the nearest military or naval units to ensure the proper handling and disposition of the item.”
Trinidad said the AFP remains committed to safeguarding national interests.
“The AFP emphasizes its commitment to national security and calls on the public to remain vigilant. We encourage everyone to participate in safeguarding our nation by promptly reporting any suspicious activities or discoveries to the proper authorities, including the AFP,” he said.
In an undated video circulating online, a fisherman captured footage of a silver and red drone drifting near his boat, with parts of its body and tip already encrusted with barnacles.
Philippine Navy Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, earlier said if the item spotted in Bohol is confirmed as an underwater drone or glider, then it would be the sixth of its kind discovered in Philippine waters.
This follows the submersible drone found in the waters of San Pascual, Masbate, last 30 December.

GPA takes to the skies, drone inspections in Sinajana, Guam Thursday
January 22, 2025
Don’t be alarmed if you see drones flying ahead, scouting the power infrastructure in your village. It may be the Guam Power Authority’s drones.
GPA crews have taken to using unmanned aerial vehicles, better known as drones, to inspect the power system and perform digital and 3D modeling of grid equipment, according to the utility communications office.
Crews have been flying drones around Sinajana to inspect steel monotubes since last week, with more “aerial operations” scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Thursday around Pale Kieran Hickey Street, according to GPA.
“Do not be alarmed and please do not shoot them,” Sinajana Mayor Robert Hofmann advised village residents via WhatsApp.
A flight plan for the drones is prepared in advance, with plans to avoid low-flying or travel through residential areas as much as possible, GPA communications told the Pacific Daily News.
GPA drones are marked with the GPA logo, and the drone pilot or a spotter must maintain line of sight with the drone during operations, according to the utility office.
Drones will generally follow municipality streets, main routes, and the right of ways for their poles to avoid private property as much as possible, according to GPA.
Any future drone activity will be coordinated with the relevant village mayor’s office, the utility stated.
Employees from the GPA Engineering Division fly the drones, and have been remote pilot-certified by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Besides inspections, the drones are used for photogrammetry, orthomosaics, digital surface modeling, digital terrain modeling and 3D point cloud models, GPA stated.
Visual inspection images are used internally by GPA engineers or line crews for planning, maintenance or other projects.
Other “digital products” are used for GPA’s geographic information system.
“GPA makes every effort to mitigate risk for its UAV operations that include not flying closer than 30 meters from people,” the utility stated.
However, if residents have any concerns, they can contact GPA Emergency Dispatch at (671) 475-1472/3/4 or GPA Communications Office at (671) 648-3145.

Heliguy North Shields in drone without pilot UK first
January 22, 2025
A North East company has become the first in the UK to be allowed to carry out drone flights without a pilot.
heliguy, based in North Shields, is one of Britain’s leading UK drone specialists and suppliers, with staff also providing technical support and training.
Now, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has granted heliguy authorisation to operate drone-in-a-box flights beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS).
Typically, pilots must be able to see a drone at all times.
However, the watchdog’s decision means heliguy’s skilled pilots can operate a drone anywhere in the UK from a state-of-the-art command centre, known as ‘The Rocc’ (Remote Operations Control Centre) inside the firm’s Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate HQ.
While many companies already use drone technology, this takes that potential a step further by unlocking remote operations, which heliguy can conduct on behalf of a client.
For Michael Smith, heliguy’s Head of Operations, the approval is a major milestone - and could help industries unlock the power of drone technology to help boost their business.
“Drones are routinely used for everything from oil and gas pipeline inspections, to keeping prisons and construction sites safe. In the past that has meant having the pilot on-site, but this decision changes everything,” said Mr Smith.
“For instance, it could transform the security industry, with one drone - capable of recording evidence in real-time - capable of carrying out round-the-clock patrols on big sites.
“That could help businesses make substantial multi-year savings. Additionally, for pipeline or wind turbine inspections, the ability to fly BVLOS could dramatically speed up the time it takes to complete the job.
“However, we are increasingly seeing demand from an array of industries - from professional football clubs to universities - keen on utilising drones to see just how transformative they can be for a business.”
The drones are stored on-site in a box and can be sent airborne remotely in mere seconds.
While a human operator will always be on stand-by they don’t have to visually follow the drone, which stays inside a pre-approved and safe flight path.
The authorisation for heliguy has been a year in the making and is solely for drones flown in an atypical air environment; areas where the risk of encountering another aircraft or a building is practically non-existent.
Permission was granted after Heliguy completed 'blueprint' permission at Komatsu's Smart Construction facility, in County Durham.
While each additional location would also require CAA permission, organisations can utilise heliguy's consultancy arm to help prepare their submission while any future missions will be carried out at secure sites in a controlled environment.

CND and Drone Wars to gather at base to oppose US Drone Flights from UK
January 22, 2025
Protestors led by Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and Drone Wars will gather outside the main gates of RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire at 1pm on Saturday, 25 January to oppose plans to fly US Global Hawk drones from the base.
The protest comes as the newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump once again repeated his plan to ‘Make America Great’ articulating a ‘peace through strength’ foreign policy.
The US plan to operate the huge RQ-4 Global Hawk drones from RAF Fairford as part of NATO’s ‘Agile Combat Employment’ (ACE) concept which argues that key military aircraft should be able to operate from different bases in order to make it harder for adversaries to conduct pre-emptive strikes.
According to documents submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the “working assumption” is that when the drones are at the base they will fly 2-3 times per week.
However, a trial flight of the giant drone into the base in August 2024 seriously disrupted UK passenger flights arriving into Birmingham airport.
CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt said:
“The Global Hawk is part of the US spying apparatus and has been for decades, from the devastating invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan to supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Whether it’s US nuclear weapons stationed at RAF Lakenheath or drone flights from RAF Fairford, these British bases are critical hubs for the US war-fighting machine. With Donald Trump back in power this is even more alarming.
Instead of hiding behind bogus arguments of national security, the British government should be held accountable for the war crimes being perpetrated from these bases.”
Director of Drone Wars Chris Cole said:
“While In theory, the UK has to give approval for any military operations carried out from its territory, given that the UK government is so determined to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Washington, there must be serious questions as to whether the Government would ever refuse permission for flights, no matter what the purpose of the operation.
Allowing US drones to fly from Fairford is effectively handing Washington a blank cheque for its drone operations and must be challenged.”

Future of Mine Countermeasures: French Navy Receives First SLAM-F Drone.
22 Jan, 2025 - 9:56
According to information published by the French MoD on January 21, 2025, the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) reached a major milestone in enhancing the French Navy's mine warfare capabilities by delivering its first surface drone designed for this mission.
This delivery is part of the SLAM-F program (Future Naval Mine Countermeasure System).
The delivered system includes an innovative surface drone equipped with a high-resolution SAMDIS towed sonar and a deployable operations center based in Brest, Brittany.
Measuring 12 meters in length, 4 meters in width, and with a displacement of up to 20.8 tons, the drone can perform missions lasting up to 40 hours at an operational speed of 8 knots and a maximum speed of 21 knots.
The SAMDIS sonar, which currently provides a detection range of 100 meters (to be extended to 200 meters by the end of 2025), enables accurate detection and classification of underwater threats.
Its compact, air-transportable design replaces the larger ships traditionally used for such operations, while reducing risks to human crews by operating in remotely controlled and unmanned modes.
The development of this drone falls under the framework of the Franco-British Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) cooperation program, led by Thales Underwater Systems and managed by OCCAr (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation).
The delivery of this first drone marks an initial step toward achieving full operational capability, anticipated by the end of 2025. Eventually, this drone will be joined by five additional units, creating an autonomous fleet capable of efficiently covering high-risk areas.
In preparation for this transition, training programs began in the summer of 2024, enabling French Navy personnel to familiarize themselves with the system immediately upon delivery. Additionally, the drone successfully completed its sea trials on January 16, 2025.
Unmanned systems are increasingly central to mine warfare strategies worldwide, with several nations developing and deploying advanced technologies to enhance maritime security and operational efficiency.
The Belgian and Royal Netherlands Navies have initiated the replacement Mine Countermeasures (rMCM) program, a transformative step in naval mine warfare capabilities.
Launched in 2019, the Belgium Naval & Robotics consortium—comprising Naval Group and Exail—was tasked with delivering 12 Mine Countermeasure (MCM) vessels and approximately 100 drones.
In the context of ongoing conflict, Ukraine has pioneered the use of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for mine-related operations.
The Khartiia Brigade successfully employed a remote-controlled UGV equipped with a machine gun in an assault against Russian forces in the Kharkiv region.
German defense manufacturer Rheinmetall and Croatian robotics specialist DOK-ING have announced a joint venture to develop unmanned military vehicles.
The collaboration aims to produce vehicles capable of tasks such as mine clearance, air defense, and reconnaissance.
The first prototype, expected in 2025, will be an unmanned mine-scattering vehicle based on DOK-ING's Komodo platform, capable of laying mines and mapping their positions at speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour.

China’s submarine-launched drones can do more than the US military thinks: study
Updated: 9:42pm, 22 Jan 2025
The US military is reportedly considering a tactic that involves deploying a submarine near the Chinese coast to release a large number of drones from under the water.
These drones would then form a swarm in the air and launch surprise attacks on the People’s Liberation Army fleet during any potential attempt to land in Taiwan, thereby reducing the need for US ships to get too close to the combat zone and risk being hit.
But there’s a twist: China has already turned this idea into reality, and test flights suggest its drones could accomplish much more than the Pentagon has envisioned for its own.
With help from China’s unmatched drone production chain, researchers with the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU) and the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Centre (CARDC) have developed the world’s first drone that can be launched by a submarine from the water, loop repeatedly between the sea and the sky, and eventually find its way back to the sub.
With a unique foldable wing design, the drone can “move across water-air media multiple times in a single journey”, thus significantly improving its concealment and survival abilities, the project team, led by NWPU associate professor Dong Changyin, wrote in a peer-reviewed paper published on December 31 in Acta Aeronautica et Astronautica Sinica, a journal run by the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
The drone has been named Feiyi by Dong’s team. In Chinese, fei means “fly”, while the character yi dates back more than 3,000 years and was used to describe the scene of a water bird spreading its wings and preparing to take off from the surface.
“It combines the advantages of efficient underwater navigation and high agility in the air,” Dong’s team wrote. “There will be great application potential in military fields such as marine reconnaissance, surveillance, strike and attack.”
By contrast, the drones planned to be used by the US military need to be transported to the surface in a torpedo-like tube and have no mobility under water.
Then, after leaving the sea, they must stay in the air, so they are more susceptible to attack.
These disposable drones can only self-destruct or launch suicidal attacks after completing their reconnaissance missions.
Meanwhile Feiyi, according to Dong’s team’s analysis, could outnumber such opponents in future marine battlefields due to its higher survival rate.
Feiyi’s underwater navigation abilities are particularly impressive, with its travel efficiency surpassing that of most existing cross-media drones.
This is mainly because its four pairs of rotating blades for flight can flip and fold like human arms, allowing the irregular blade surfaces to cling tightly to the fuselage, thereby greatly reducing water resistance.
Its tail-mounted, underwater-specific propellers provide powerful propulsion and steering.
On reaching the surface, Feiyi can maintain an upright posture in rough waves, spread its four arms, and then soar into the air.
After landing back on the water, its wings fold and it can then submerge in just five seconds.
The drone can carry reconnaissance, communication or other functional modules, and with the support of artificial intelligence technology, it can autonomously complete “certain missions with specific requirements”, Dong’s team wrote.
NWPU and CARDC are both leading defence research and development powerhouses in China, involved in the development of cutting-edge weapons such as hypersonic vehicles.
According to publicly available information, China is developing a wide range of cross-media weapons, including a variant that uses solid-fuel ramjet engines to achieve high-speed cruising both over and under the water.
War game simulations suggest existing defence technology cannot stop such weapons.

Extremely Low Altitude Shootdown Of Ukrainian Drone By Russian SAM Caught On Video
January 21, 2025
An intense video has emerged in Russia, showing a portion of a Ukrainian drone strike, including the interception of one of the drones by what is likely to have been a Pantsir short-range air defense system.
Footage showing the successful interception of Ukraine’s long-range one-way attack drones by Russian ground-based air defenses is not generally common and this one reinforces the challenge posed by these relentless Ukrainian attacks against Russian infrastructure and military facilities. Meanwhile, it’s very much a textbook example of how a surface-to-air missile in this class can down targets even at very low level, with limited response time.
The video in question, which began to appear on social media earlier today, was taken by a bystander who witnessed the drone strike, reportedly over the Smolensk region in western Russia.
In the video, taken overnight, we can clearly hear the buzzing engine of a Ukrainian drone, as flashes from nearby explosions illuminate the clouds.
We then see the rocket engine of a Russian surface-to-air missile moving from right to left and at a very low level. So low, in fact, is the missile, that the glare from its motor can be seen to illuminate nearby houses as it passes them.
It then impacts its target in a shower of sparks and burning debris.
The use of a surface-to-air missile in such close proximity to civilians and civilian infrastructure is noteworthy, but also a measure of the desperate efforts being taken to try and thwart these kinds of attacks.
After a brief pause, the noise of at least one other drone can be heard, indicating that this was an attack involving multiple drones.
At around the halfway mark in the video above, we see, from below, a twin-boom Ukrainian drone as it flies low over a building, followed by an explosion.
People then start to spill out of the building, seemingly mainly intrigued by the engagements happening around them.
Based on its appearance, the drone could be the same as the type that was notably used in an attack on Russian air defenses in Crimea in September 2023.
In particular, the pusher engine configuration and extended wing roots match with this drone, the name of which remains undisclosed.
We can’t say for sure that the missile was, as widely reported, from a Pantsir short-range air defense system (SHORADS), although it would seem most likely.
The Pantsir has been deployed widely to defend critical infrastructure within Russia, including on top of government buildings in Moscow, where they appeared in early 2023 after Ukraine demonstrated its ability to conduct strikes at extended ranges.
In the wheeled Pantsir-S1 configuration that is primarily used for defending infrastructure, civil and military, the system is armed with up to six ready-to-fire 57E-series command-guided missiles and also has two 30mm automatic cannons.
Crews use the system’s integrated radar and infrared sensor to target aerial threats.
The missiles reportedly have a maximum range of around 11 miles and can hit targets at altitudes up to around 50,000 feet, although this is very much a best-case scenario and depends on the exact missile variant and the profile of the threat.
However, the system is primarily designed for low-altitude, close-in point defense. This includes swatting down cruise missiles, tactical aircraft, and air-to-ground munitions. Drones, too, are one of the main targets for the Pantsir.
Reportedly, the target of the Ukrainian drone strike in last night’s video was the Smolensk Aviation Plant, which is operated by the Tactical Missiles Corporation, Russia’s major producer of air-launched precision-guided munitions.
Its portfolio includes a wide range of tactical air-to-ground missiles, as well as air-to-air missiles.

U.S. Navy MH-60R Seahawk Helicopter Shoots Down Houthi Drone for the First Time
January 21, 2025 at 11:59 PM
The U.S. Navy’s premier anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface (ASuW) helicopter, the MH-60R Seahawk, has shot down its first drone, marking a new milestone for the service.
During an address on Jan. 16, 2025, at the Surface Navy Association’s annual symposium, near Washington DC, Admiral James Kilby, the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, revealed the successful destruction of a Houthi drone by a U.S. Navy helicopter.
Kilby was addressing the United States’ efforts in the Red Sea, before stating “I was sitting in my office not too long ago where we had the first helicopter shoot down a UAV.”
This was later clarified in a follow up conversation with Vice Admiral Daniel Cheever, commander of Naval Air Forces, who confirmed that the shoot down occurred “about a month ago” and involved a MH-60R Seahawk attached to the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group.
They did not state as to the type of drone that was struck by the Seahawk, nor the weapon system employed, however Cheever stated during the symposium that an “unconventional system” was used to take it down, suggesting that the helicopter may have used a weapon system not normally used against aerial threats.
The Warzone, who first reported the story about the shoot down, suggested several options for the type of munitions possibly used against the Houthi drone.
One of these is the AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missile, citing use by U.S. and Israeli AH-64 Apache helicopters employing Hellfires against drones in live fire exercises as well as on combat operations, however this would mark a first use on this type of helicopter.
The Hellfire would have had to be laser guided, as the variants used against drones in exercises by the U.S. Army feature a millimeter-wave radar seeker cued by the Apache’s onboard AN-APG-78 Longbow radar, which the Seahawk lacks.
They have also suggested that the AGR-20 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), a laser guided variant of the Hydra 70 rocket, may have been used in the engagement.
If one of these systems was used, it speaks to the skill and accuracy of the onboard crew to be able to successfully lase a target moving in three dimensions at speed.
This also adds a new counter drone capability to the U.S. Navy’s arsenal which can be repeated in future engagements.
The Seahawk
The Seahawk is a majorly upgraded and altered version of the original U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk, developed to improve logistics and the supply of spare parts for the U.S. Navy helicopter arm by keeping commonality with the Black Hawk series of helicopters.
This originally produced multiple Seahawk variants, all of which were designed for different roles within the Navy’s helicopter force.
Also known as the Romeo, the MH-60R is a further demonstration of this concept, with the aircraft replacing multiple Navy variants of the Black Hawk and combining their capabilities onto a single multi-role airframe.
The Romeo replaced the SH-60B Seahawk, the U.S. Navy’s first Black Hawk derivative that was operational between 1979 and 2016.
This helicopter laid out the design for the rest of the Seahawk series of aircraft, featuring anti-corrosion coatings on all surfaces, a changed landing gear layout to accommodate a folding tail boom, as well as folding rotor blades.
The SH-60B acted as the U.S. Navy’s Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) helicopter, providing ASW capability to warships operating away from a carrier battlegroup.
The helicopter was used to scout outside of a ship’s own radar and sonar horizon utilizing its onboard magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) and air-launched sonobuoys to track hostile submarines, before sending the data back to the ship, or attacking the target with its own on-board weapon systems.
Its multi role capability meant it could operate as the ship’s general-purpose helicopter, performing search and rescue (SAR), ASuW and other utility roles needed for a ship at sea.
The MH-60R also replaced the SH-60F as the U.S. Navy’s primary ASW helicopter, which was designed purely for hunting and killing submarines in defense of the carrier battle group.
It utilized an AQS-13F dipping sonar and a six-tube sonobuoy launcher for locating the submarine and either Mk 46, Mk 50, or Mk 54 torpedoes to destroy it.
Replacing these, the MH-60R combines both sets of capability onto a single multirole platform, enabling the U.S. Navy to fulfil all its mission requirements with an eased logistics chain.
The MH-60R comes equipped with a modern multi-function digital glass cockpit, with four 8×10 inch full-color multifunction mission and flight displays that are usable with night vision goggles, enabling nighttime flight operations.

New Jersey drones are BACK as interactive map shows activity ramping up… after Trump promised to release truth
Updated: 06:47 EST, 22 January 2025
An interactive map of UFO sightings has revealed shockingly new reports of drones in New Jersey and other states, suggesting this bizarre mystery is still unfolding.
The map, created by the UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) tracking website Enigma Labs, shows hundreds of sightings logged as recently as January 7 in multiple Northeastern states.
The mysterious drones along the East Coast appeared in November, with 22 people issuing reports to Enigma starting on the 20th. But that number dramatically increased to 347 by December 31.
A drone ban was issued from December 18 to January 17, during which Enigma labs said the average number of reported sightings dropped by 43 percent.
Now, new data shows 36 sightings were logged the week of January 1, and nearly half were spotted in New Jersey.
The recent sightings come as President Trump said Monday that he will 'tell the people' the truth about the drones.
'Why don't we find out immediately,' he said while in the Oval office. 'I can't imagine it's an enemy or there… people would've gotten blown up over [it].
'Maybe they were testing things. I don't know why they wouldn't have said what it was.'
The Biden administration had assured the public that the sightings were not a threat, brushing most of them off as hobbyist drones, commercial airplanes and even stars.
The Garden State still appears to be the epicenter of activity following the first sightings in November, when eye-witnesses reported 'car-sized drones' flying above a military base and President Donald Trump's golf course.
But since November, hundreds of other reports have surfaced across the Northeast and even from several southern states, including Virginia, Kentucky and the Carolinas.
The most recent drone sightings recorded by the UAP tracking site occurred in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Around 7:10pm ET on January 5, an unnamed person reported two orbs moving slowly across the sky over Marlton, New Jersey.
'They were pulsating and appeared to be lower than a star,' the eyewitness wrote to the the UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) tracking website EnigmaLabs.io that created the map.
Videos included in the report show an aircraft that appears to be flashing a green light flying overhead, as well as a circular blue orb high in the air.
On that same day around 10:55pm ET, an eyewitness in Muhlenberg, Pennsylvania reported an 'airplane-like ring of lights changing direction.'
'Looked as though it was mimicking an airplane at first and then turned into a ring of lights and changed directions it was going. Never have seen anything like this. Are these the drones people are talking about?' the eyewitness wrote.
A video shows a single aircraft with a flashing yellow light on one side flying over a shopping complex.
On January 7 around 3:00am ET, an eyewitness in Yaphank, New York reported 'three lights moving rapidly southeast.'
'Exiting my vehicle, noticed some lights in the sky moving at a very rapid pace. Was initially three lights, one behind another. Video only shows two, with one fading out of view,' they wrote.
In the video, two distant lights appear to be moving across the night sky.
'Was somewhat low in the sky in comparison to other sightings in the past. No noise heard, no red/green aviation lighting witnessed. Very high rate of speed observed, traveling from the northwest to southeast,' the eyewitness wrote.
The first drone sightings occurred in November over the US Army's Picatinny Arsenal and President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster, which raised concerns the drones are part of spy campaign.
Indeed, the unidentified aircraft have been reported over multiple US military sites in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia, Ohio, and even American bases in Germany and England.
In December, Trump claimed 'the government knows what is happening' when asked about bizarre phenomenon during a news conference.
His drone report could be coming as soon as today, as he recently said that the American people are 'going to find out' what is behind the drone activity on January 21.

'Egg UFO' Photos Flood Social Media
Jan 22, 2025 at 12:43 PM EST
A series of mysterious images and videos believed by some to depict an "egg" UFO have flooded social media, although the alien-hunting community remains skeptical of their authenticity.
An anonymous user or users posted a series of videos, images, and backstory on the message board 4chan on Monday, which were then reposted to Reddit and X, garnering thousands of likes and upvotes from UFO-sighting enthusiasts .
The viral images come days after former U.S. Air Force employee Jacob Barber left alien hunters disappointed when the release of his widely hyped and anticipated "egg UFO" footage turned out to be grainy and unconvincing.
A significant minority of Americans believe that global governments are concealing proof of UFOs and alien life from the public. Congress held hearings about reported UFO sightings in 2023.
Users on social media forums including Discord, Reddit and 4chan routinely post what is claimed to be "leaked" government information relating to broader theories, that occasionally includes real classified intelligence.
In December 2024, for example, the Federal Aviation Authority confirmed to Newsweek that a pilot reported "unidentified lights" after leaked audio of the pilot speaking to air traffic control about a UFO went viral on social media
On Saturday, Jacob Barber appeared on NewsNation to discuss his account of experiences recovering unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), describing an "egg-shaped" object recovered by helicopter, said to be part of an under-the-radar UFO retrieval program.
Green-tinted footage aired during the broadcast showed a white object said to be tethered to a helicopter by cable and being transported. Most viewers were unconvinced.
By Monday morning, an anonymous user or users on 4chan shared videos and images resembling the NewsNation footage, claiming they depicted an "egg" UAP discovered in an Antarctic ice cave in 2022.
The original anonymous poster described the object as "of ancient origin" and said they would reply to questions from other users.
Other images and answers about the "UAP" were posted by anonymous users in the replies, purportedly by the original poster, but because 4chan users are anonymous, their identity is not verifiable. Some of these replies claimed the NewsNation footage was real.
On X, user @BillyKryzak reposted some of the egg images claiming that in his analysis, he is "99.2% sure these photos of this egg are REAL," garnering 209,700 views by Wednesday.
User @DailyUFOPosts wrote on X about the 4chan images, "this is huge. Massive to moving disclosure forward."
Reddit user PyrolsSpai posted some of the images to the site's UFO community, garnering 2,900 upvotes and 1,500 replies.
Many of the replies were skeptical of the post's authenticity, User ConclusionStreet4008 wrote: "It's insane how everyone believes this. It's clearly fake. Are people that desperate?" User halflife5 wrote: "It's so obvious guys.
4chan is trolling again please just look at this. It's so obviously an AI generated picture and it's only happening because people were clowning on the news nation video."
Another user gardenofsmegma posted a close up of one of the images, claiming that when zoomed in, the cave surface in the "egg" UFO image appears computer generated. This post garnered 2,800 upvotes by Wednesday.
Reddit user ParemsanCheese92: "This is getting ridiculous. Internet illiteracy is a dangerous thing that can lead to people being scammed. Please end this circus with the 'whistleblower.'
You are being played by a random 4chan user for crying out loud. Different background each time, meaning most likely these images are AI."
Reddit user gardenofsmegma: ""Let's take a step back and a closer look at the image. Look at the details of the rocks in the cave. To me that looks including a it could be a screenshot from a game.
Look at the textures, look at the shape of the rocks. I'm guessing this is something that was created in Unreal Engine with a filter over it."
Every time new UFO content emerges, the images and evidence are dissected by the large online audience passionate for searching for hints of alien life.
Last Thursday, President Donald Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. indicated that investigations into alien life would be a focus of his father's new administration.
Speaking on his Triggered podcast to UAP (unidentified anomalous phenomena) expert Ross Coulthart, Trump said that the White House was "working on" investigations into UAP instances and alien life.
He also called on Elon Musk, another top ally of the president-elect, to help with any research.
