Trump says he’ll release the JFK, MLK assassination files ‘immediately’

Wednesday, January 22, 2025

“I’m going to release them immediately. We’re going to see the information. We are looking at it right now,” Mr. Trump said in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

During his first term, Mr. Trump did release some documents related to Kennedy’s 1963 assassination, but ultimately bowed to pressure from the intelligence community who urged Mr. Trump to keep the information under wraps citing national security concerns.

Mr. Trump said Wednesday that Mike Pompeo who served as CIA director and, later, Secretary of State was among those who urged Mr. Trump to keep some files classified.

“He felt it was just not a good time to release them,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Pompeo.

Air Force planes will fly deportation flights under Trump order

A total of four C-17s and C-130s will be used to fly migrants in detention out of the United States.

The U.S. military will fly about 5,400 migrants currently in detention out of the country as part of the Defense Department’s response to President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency on the southern border, defense officials said on Wednesday.

The aircrews and maintainers involved in the deportation flights will be in addition to 1,500 active-duty troops that the Pentagon will deploy to the southern border by the end of the week, the senior defense official said.

On the flights, the Department of Homeland Security will provide in-flight law enforcement and diplomatic clearances will go through the State Department, Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses said in a statement.

Both the Department of Homeland Security and State Department are still determining where the migrants will be flown to, a senior defense official told reporters on Wednesday.

“This is just the beginning,” Salesses said in the statement. “In short order, the Department will develop and execute additional missions in cooperation with [the Department of Homeland Security], federal agencies, and state partners to address the full range of threats outlined by the President at our nation’s borders.”

US Justice Dept freezes its civil rights litigation

WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Justice has ordered its civil rights division to pause any ongoing litigation left over from the administration of former President Joe Biden, according to an internal memo reviewed by Reuters on Wednesday.

The memo freezes any activity in the division, which is tasked with enforcing anti-discrimination laws. It directs the division to not pursue any new cases or agree to settlements, and says the DOJ might revisit some settlements forged by the Biden administration in recent months.

Trump’s new Justice Department leadership orders a freeze on civil rights cases

Updated 10:59 PM EST, January 22, 2025 Attorneys in the department’s Civil Rights Division were ordered not to file any new complaints, amicus briefs or other certain court papers “until further notice,” one of the memos said.

Justice Department Orders a Halt to Civil Rights Work

January 22, 2025

The actions, while expected, represent an abrupt about-face for a department that had for the past four years aggressively investigated high-profile instances of violence and systemic discrimination in local law enforcement and government agencies.

The first of two short memos sent by Chad Mizelle, the chief of staff at the department, ordered a “litigation freeze” at the department’s Civil Rights Division to decide whether Trump appointees want “to initiate any new cases,” according to a screenshot of the document viewed by The New York Times.

Mr. Mizelle also barred lawyers working for the division from filing “motions to intervene, agreed-upon remands, amicus briefs or statements of interest,” unless they receive the approval of senior Trump appointees. It is the clearest sign yet that the hard-line conservatives taking over the department intend to swiftly sweep away the previous administration’s liberal agenda.

Perhaps more significant, a second memo ordered a similar freeze on department activity involving so-called consent decrees — agreements hashed out with local governments intended to address flawed police practices, or bias based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and disabilities.
