Ezra Cohen-Watnick, a former National Security Council official, accepted a new post as the national security adviser to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Justice Department. This move came after he was ousted from the White House in August 2017 as part of changes made by Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, who replaced Michael T. Flynn as the national security adviser.

Cohen-Watnick, known for his hawkish stance on Russia and China, was brought on by Michael T. Flynn at the start of the Trump administration as the senior director for intelligence for the National Security Council. However, he was criticized by some former officials for being too young for the position, which is usually filled by C.I.A. veterans.

His return to government was met with controversy, particularly due to his involvement in the “midnight run” incident, where he allegedly helped print intelligence reports that later served as proof for Representative Devin Nunes’ claims about surveillance of President Trump’s communications. Despite Cohen-Watnick’s claims that he was unaware of the leak, his role in the Justice Department raised concerns among Democrats, especially regarding the Mueller investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
