Trump says Canada isn’t sovereign

The country is “totally reliant” on the US, and would be better off as the 51st state, the US president has argued

US President Donald Trump has vowed to no longer let Canada “take advantage” of the US, once again stating that he wants to make the neighboring country America’s 51st state. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said Canada would not even exist without US subsidies and business cooperation.

Trump made similar remarks in the run-up to his inauguration earlier this month, suggesting that his administration could make Canada part of the US. Ottawa has dismissed these suggestions.

“Canada’s been taking advantage of the US for years. We’re not going to let that happen,”Trump told reporters.

“Without our subsidy, Canada doesn’t exist really. Canada is totally reliant on us, therefore they should be a state,” he said. Trump accused Canada of “treating us very unfairly on trade,”claiming that the US has been losing $250 billion a year to the neighboring state in trade deficits, while Canada does “almost 90% of their business with the United States.”

“I could stop that in one day, and if I stopped that, Canada wouldn’t exist as a country… I don’t want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on supporting a country unless that country is a state,” he said.

According to Trump, Canada would benefit from becoming part of the US.

“If it is a state, the people of Canada would pay a much lower tax. Their taxes would be cut in half… They’ll get much better treatment, much better care,” he stated, adding that Canadians would also “have no military problems” and “would be much more secure in every way.”

“I think it’s a great thing for Canada… I view it as, honestly, a country that should be a state,”Trump said.

Trump earlier threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, saying the measure would strengthen the US economy. He reiterated the threat earlier this week, telling reporters that he plans to introduce the tariffs in February. Canada’s outgoing prime minister, Justin Trudeau, responded, warning Trump that Canada will introduce retaliatory tariffs and “prices for American consumers on just about everything will go up.” Earlier this month, Trudeau said there isn’t “a snowball’s chance in hell” that Canada will become part of the US.

US officials pushing to unfreeze aid for Ukraine – FT

Diplomats have reportedly asked the government to make an exception for Kiev, after Trump suspended most of Washington’s foreign aid programs

Several US diplomatshave urged the State Department to make anexception for Ukraine-related programsafter President Donald Trump ordered a sweeping suspension on foreign aid, the Financial Times reported on Saturday. Trump’s orderpotentially jeopardizes support for Ukrainian schools, hospitals, and infrastructure development, although military aid remains intact, according to the newspaper. (WTF why is the US paying for what their government should do?I bet that money is going to active CIA in Ukraine etc.)

Acting on behalf of the US president, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued instructions on Friday to suspend any new foreign aid expenditure for 90 days. Contracting and grant officers from the State Department and USAID were directed to“immediately issue stop-work orders… until such time as the secretary shall determine, following a review,” according to a leaked cable cited by the FT.

The newspaper claimed that by Saturday evening, several organizations in Ukraine had received orders to stop their operations until further notice.

However,USAID in Ukraine has generally chosen to defy Rubio’s decree to issue “stop work” orders until it receives more clarificationfrom Washington, the FT claimed. American diplomats campaigning for aid to Kiev to be unfrozen reportedly hope that they will be able to win Rubio over. “We do not know at this time whether this request will be approved — in whole or in part — but there are positive signals thus far out of Washington,” an email sent to USAID staff in Ukraine on Saturday said, according to the newspaper.

The outlet claims that Rubio’s order endangers support for the development of Ukrainian infrastructure, energy, and economy projects, while not affecting American military assistance. The FT quotes an unnamed Ukrainian government official as saying that “military aid to Ukraine is intact. At least as of now, and it is certainly not part of this 90-day freeze.”

The pause in US foreign development aid was announced by President Trump on Monday, just hours after his inauguration. The freeze aims to review the effectiveness and alignment of aid with US foreign policy objectives. The only exceptions are military financing for Israel and Egypt, as well as foreign emergency food aid. Ukraine was not part of the list of exceptions.

Since February 2022, the US has provided over $65 billion in military aid to Kiev, according to the State Department. However, Trump has been skeptical of the assistance, saying Ukraine has “had enough” and that it is time for a peace agreement to be reached with Russia. His team is reportedly aiming to end the conflict between Kiev and Moscow in 100 days, threatening Russia with more sanctions if it does not agree to negotiate. While Moscow remains skeptical about the timeline, it has signaled a willingness to engage in talks.

Trump to sanction Colombia for refusing to take back illegal aliens

Bogota must accept the “criminals they forced into the United States,” the US president has said

US President Donald Trump has said that he will impose emergency tariffs on Colombia and sanction its officials after Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused to allow American planes carrying deported illegal immigrants to land in the country.

“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social app on Sunday, adding that he has directed his administration to take “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures.”

Trump went on to explain that he will place a 25% emergency tariff on all Colombian goods entering the US, which will be doubled in a week. The US is Colombia’s largest trading partner, with around $12 billion worth of Colombian goods entering the US every year.

Trump said that allColombian government officials along with their “allies and supporters”would have their visas revoked and be subject to a travel ban, while visa sanctions would be applied to all members of Petro’s left-wing Human Colombia party and their families.

Colombian visitors to the US will be subject to enhanced inspections by Customs and Border Protection agents, he continued, adding that financial sanctions will also be imposed on Bogota.

These measures are just the beginning,” he concluded. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!”

Earlier on Sunday, Petro said that he would not allow any deportation flights to land in Colombia until the US guarantees the “dignified treatment”of deported migrants. Petro did not state what he meant by “dignified treatment.”

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been carrying out daily raids across the US since Trump took office on Monday, with 421 people detained for removal on Saturday alone, according to the agency. Cities targeted included Boston, New York, Newark, and San Francisco, and agents focused on arresting immigrants who had committed subsequent crimes after entering the US illegally, ICE said.

Colombian president vows to US block deportation flights

Washington cannot treat “migrants as criminals,” Gustavo Petro has said

(Yes we can, they are illegal)

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said that he will deny entry to American planes carrying deported migrants. The US has been rounding up criminal migrants and deporting them ever since President Donald Trump took office.

“The US cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals,” Petro wrote on X on Sunday. “I will deny the entry of American planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory,” he continued, adding that “The United States must establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them.”

It is unclear how many Colombians are currently in US custody and awaiting deportation.

In a statement on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “deportation flights have begun.” Two military aircraft carried 160 people to Guatemala that day, while another three flights to Guatemala and four flights to Mexico took off on Friday.

Media reports initially suggested that Mexico refused to accept these flights, but the White House said that this was due to an “administrative issue” that was quickly resolved.

There are thought to be anywhere between 11 million and 35 million illegal immigrants living in the US.Trump promised on the campaign trail that, if elected, he would thin out this number by leading “the largest deportation operation in American history.”

While all illegal immigrants commit a crime the moment they enter the US by unlawful means, both Trump and his border czar, Tom Homan, have said that this operation will focus initially on those who have racked up criminal records inside after entering the country. "We’re getting the bad, hard criminals out,”
