Magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes New England - with shaking felt in Boston and Maine

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake originating off the coast of Maine shook New England today, with tremors felt in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

The earthquake occurred eight miles underground near York Harbor at 10:22 a.m. local time, according to the United States Geological Service. Smaller earthquakes are fairly common in Maine, but the state typically only sees a 3-point magnitude earthquake once a year, according to the state’s geological service.

Monday’s incident marked the strongest earthquake in the northeast U.S. since last year when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit New Jersey in April — the strongest to hit the region in more than a decade, according to NBC News.

There is currently no tsunami threat in New England, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center.

“This is like a once-in-every-five-years type of earthquake,”John Ebel, a senior scientist with Boston College’s Weston Observatory, told WBZ-TV.

Still, residents were surprised by the sudden shaking.

“It was brief, 5-8 seconds, but my entire house shook and I had couple loud bangs that I’m not sure what they were. It was pretty intense for something that small and brief,” one Massachusetts resident told WCVB.

“It lasted about 5-10 seconds and a pocket door near me was rattling and I could feel the vibration under my feet and my body on my couch,” another resident told the outlet. “My husband came out of his office right away and asked, ‘Was that a tremor?’”

Aftershocks are possible, Ebel told WBZ-TV.

“If the aftershocks get to be, you know, magnitude 2.8, 3,0, or 3,1, let’s say those will be felt probably by the people in the North Shore area of Massachusetts as well as coastal New Hampshire and south coastal Maine,” Ebel said.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said there have been no reports of damage in the state as of 10:50 a.m. local time. Emergency management officials in Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine similarly confirmed toThe Independent there have been no reports of damage, injuries or deaths from the earthquake as of Monday morning.

The Maine Emergency Management Agency has told residents to avoid calling 911 unless there is an emergency. As the quake hit, calls poured in from residents who feared the shaking was from an explosion.

Some Republican senators are pushing for the unusual step of making public a key vote on Tulsi Gabbard's nomination in the Senate Intelligence Committee,in an attempt to exert pressure on the members of a panel that typically does business behind closed doors.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Tom Cotton is being prodded to make the change by senators allied with President Donald Trump, according to two Senate GOP officials granted anonymity to speak about private conversations.

Gabbard is set to face the Senate Intelligence Committee in open and closed sessions on Thursday. Typically, aside from certain public hearings, the panel deliberates and votes in private. That includes presidential nominations.

The talk of forcing open the committee vote underscores concerns among some Republicans that Gabbard's nomination could die before it even reaches the floor.

Public pressure from Trump allies played a key role in getting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth across the finish line, andGabbard's allies believe some Republicans on the panel might vote a different way if they know their votes will be made public.

The committee is split 9-8 in favor of Republicans — meaning if all panel Democrats oppose Gabbard, as is expected,a single GOP flip could prevent her nomination from reaching the floor.

Several GOP committee members are seen as soft on Gabbard, including Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who said there were “obvious issues” with Gabbard’s shifting position on a crucial surveillance program in an interview with The Hill published Monday. “I know there’s been a lot of reporting that she’s changed her position” in favor of keeping the program, Collins said. “That’s not how I read her answers.”

A spokesperson for Cotton declined to comment.

A person familiar with Intelligence Committee procedure said while panel rules allow for the release of a vote tally, they do not allow for a public roll call of how each member voted. Members are free to disclose their votes if they wish, the person said.

Opening up the committee vote, in other words, would require the secretive committee to waive its rules, and it is unclear whether Cotton has that power.

The panel's Jan. 20 vote on CIA Director John Ratcliffe was kept closed, with only the 14-3 tally released. Three committee members — Democratic Sens. Martin Heinrich (N.M.), Jon Ossoff (Ga.) and Ron Wyden (Ore.) — ultimately opposed him on the floor.
